    West Brom 0-0 Millwall

We're under way at the Hawthorns where Baggies boss Carlos Corberan has made five changes from the midweek draw at Watford.

Kyle Bartley, Conor Townsend, Alex Mowatt, Grady Diangana and debutant Jeremy Sarmiento come in for Darnell Furlong, Cedric Kipre, Okay Yokuslu, Jed Wallace and John Swift, who has scored four goals in his last six games and five in his last eight appearances at the Hawthorns.

Gary Rowett has made a single enforced change from the side which beat Rotherham 3-0 on Wednesday as Duncan Watmore comes in for the injured Kevin Nisbet.

Plymouth, currently 19th in the Championship, are taking on water with only one win from their last six games. But they might be getting Norwich at the right time.

The Canaries - currently fifth - have had their feathers ruffled a couple of times recently with two losses in their last three.

West Brom versus Millwall is a battle between two mid-table teams who're still well in the mix.

The Baggies have picked up two wins and two draws from their last five matches, while the Lions are undefeated in three.

    Image caption,

Swans keeper Carl Rushworth can't prevent Lyndon Dykes snatching a stoppage-time leveller on Tuesday night.

Third-bottom Swansea were cruelly denied their first win of the season by a last-gasp equaliser at QPR on Tuesday.

They welcome Sheffield Wednesday, one place below them, this afternoon hoping to break that duck at the eighth attempt - and they should certainly fancy their chances.

The Owls are also winless and have won just one of the last dozen meetings between the two sides, that coming at Hillsborough nearly five years ago, while they haven't tasted victory at Swansea in 40 years.

Xisco Munoz's side have lost 17 of their last 23 away games in the second tier, winning just twice, while Swansea have lost just one of their last 15 home games against newly promoted sides, that coming against Luton in June 2020.

The Swans look favourites on paper, but when was football ever played on paper?

Notts County are very much enjoying life back in the EFL, and you’d do well to find a home fan not expecting a win against Forest Green today.

The Magpies are three from three in the league here - although the visitors are unbeaten on the road this season, so it might not be as straightforward as some think.

  6. Gills feeling heat from promoted pairpublished at 14:54 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    League Two preview

    Neil HarrisImage source, Rex Features

Gillingham have been extremely efficient this season. They are top of the table with six wins in eight games but only three teams have scored fewer than their seven. Neil Harris' side will aim to keep the points, if not too many goals, coming as they head to Doncaster.

Third-place Swindon have scored three times as many as the Gills and will hope to stretch their unbeaten start to eight games with a positive result against Morecambe.

The two promoted teams, Notts County and Wrexham, have taken to League Two like ducks to water. Notts County are in second and host strugglers Forest Green, while free-scoring Wrexham, who are in fourth, head to Stockport.

Mansfield are unbeaten this season – although five of their eight games have been draws - and they hope to keep that record intact against Barrow, while Walsall host AFC Wimbledon.

Down at the bottom, Sutton are looking to put an end to a horrible run of seven consecutive league losses as they take on MK Dons, and Tranmere, who have also lost seven out of eight host Accrington.

We’ll also enjoy Crewe v Colchester, Grimsby v Crawley, Harrogate v Salford and Newport v Bradford.

Only seven games in - yet this feels like a big match for both of these two today.

Southampton were spanked 5-0 last time in the north east at Sunderland, rock bottom Middlesbrough are winless since April in the Championship.

But here’s some positivity from one Boro fan....“we’re only 17 points off top spot!” he told me. That’s the spirit.

Winless Middlesbrough are rock bottom of the Championship with just two points from seven games.

Michael Carrick's men managed to end a three game skid with a much-needed midweek draw against fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday but they face more of a challenge against Southampton.

Saints, who have their own problems, enter the game battered and bruised.

After a strong start Russell Martin's streaky team have lost their edge and their last three games, getting battered in the process and outscored 10-1.

On paper the visitors have more quality but don't rule out an upset in this one.

Leeds United v Watford (15:00 BST)

Leeds United's last home league win came against Nottingham Forest on 4 April

The positive vibes appear to be back at Leeds United, although the Whites had to settle for a point at Hull City in midweek after playing the final half hour with 10 men.

However, head coach Daniel Farke is yet to register his first victory at Elland Road.

Leeds have drawn all three home games so far this season, and are winless in eight on home soil stretching back to April – the club’s worst run since 1982.

Watford travel to Yorkshire unbeaten in three games but without victory in their past 11 away games in the Championship.

The Hornets last picked up all three points on the road at Norwich on 2 January.

  12. Pompey lead way in third tierpublished at 14:44 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    League One preview

    Colby BishopImage source, Rex Features

Portsmouth lead the way in the third tier with an impressive 3-2 away win over Barnsley in midweek stretching their unbeaten start to the season to eight games.

Colby Bishop’s five goals have helped them along the way to being the joint top-scorers in the league, but they will face a test today against Lincoln who are unbeaten in six after losing their opening game of the campaign.

It will be interesting to see how Exeter perform today after their worst ever home defeat in the EFL Trophy against Reading on Tuesday. A young and much-changed side were hammered 9-0 by the Royals.

It was in stark contrast to what has been a great start in the league which sees them second on goal difference, and it will be a more familiar line-up today when they visit in-form Oxford who are in fourth.

If ever a team has needed a goal it is Cheltenham against Stevenage. The Robins sacked boss Wade Elliott on Wednesday, 24 hours after they lost 3-0 to Peterborough to stretch their winless, and goalless, start to the season to eight games.

Cheltenham are the first team since Halifax in in 1990-91 to fail to score in their first eight league games – no side in EFL history has ever gone nine without a goal – that is most certainly not a record you want.

Third-placed Port Vale lost their first game since the opening day in midweek – surprisingly to Burton which was the Brewers’ first victory of the season. They face Cambridge today, while Burton look to build on that win against fellow early-season strugglers Fleetwood who now have Lee Johnson in charge.

Blackpool v Reading face each other in what was a Championship fixture last season and Bolton v Peterborough looks like a juicy game with the teams in seventh and eighth.

Barnsley are looking to get back on track after the Pompey loss at Northampton and Wigan head to Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers.

Elsewhere, Derby are on the road at Carlisle, Charlton host Wycombe and Leyton Orient are at home to Shrewsbury.

  13. Tractor Boys in the driving seatpublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

    Ipswich v Blackburn (15:00 BST)

Ipswich Town are in fine form with three wins on the bounce and Kieran McKenna's men could go top of the Championship with victory at Portman Road today.

The Tractor Boys haven't conceded a goal in their past two games and will look to ride that momentum against an inconsistent Blackburn side who are coming off a midweek loss.

It's hard to know what you're going to get from Rovers week to week. They have one win, a draw and a loss from their three away games so far this season.

Ipswich have to be the favoured side in this one.

Bristol City boss Nigel Pearson has had two spells in charge of Leicester, leaving the Foxes for the second time in June 2015 after securing Premier League survival

Leicester City are a point behind Preston, with new boss Enzo Maresca recording six wins from his seven league games in charge.

The Foxes were beaten last time out at the King Power Stadium, losing 1-0 to Hull, and have gone 16 league games without a clean sheet at home in the league.

They welcome former boss Nigel Pearson back to the club, with the 60-year-old making his mark at Bristol City.

The Robins stretched their unbeaten run to four games after thrashing Plymouth 4-1 in midweek, and are yet to lose on the road.

These two clubs haven’t met in the league since 2012-13 – when Pearson was in charge of the Foxes and did the double over the Ashton Gate outfit.

Milutin Osmajic whipped off his shirt after netting his first goal for Preston - and what proved to be the winner - against Birmingham on Tuesday

At the start of the season I’m not sure many people would have had Preston North End as being top of the Championship after seven games.

But Ryan Lowe’s side are the only unbeaten team in the Championship, and have won six games in a row.

The Lilywhites have shown their fighting qualities this season, winning seven points from losing positions – the joint most in the second tier.

Rotherham, meanwhile, find themselves towards the foot of the table, having only picked up one victory, which came at home against Norwich.

Matt Taylor’s men are aiming to avoid a fifth defeat in six league outings.

The weekend's Championship fixtures got under way last night, with QPR picking up a point on the road at Birmingham City.

Both Blues keeper John Ruddy and Rangers counterpart Asmir Begovic were in good form, but the hosts came closest to finding a goal.

However, an acrobatic goalline clearance from Hoops midfielder Sam Field prevented his team-mate Steve Cook from scoring a first-half own goal.

It's now four league games without a win for Birmingham, while QPR have drawn two in a row.

There are just four clubs who remain unbeaten in the English Football League this season, with all sides having played seven or eight games.

Preston North End, Portsmouth, Swindon Town and Mansfield Town will be looking to extend their runs this afternoon.

However, five clubs are yet to register their first victory - and two of them meet when Swansea City host Sheffield Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Cheltenham Town are still seeking a first league goal of the campaign.
