Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe speaking to CBS: "It was a brilliant effort from the players, it was a different game and it was a cat-and-mouse between the two. We were trying to press them and they were trying to play through us."

On the game-plan against PSG: "We made it clear as we could. We wanted to be ourselves when we played AC Milan and we were not where we needed to be. I think that was with expected with the three defeats previously to that game, I think we came here with a lot more confident mood. Full credit to the players, they had to deliver it against world-class players."

On the Newcastle fans this evening: "I think in every team talk I mention the crowd because they are so powerful, if we don’t use the crowd and play a style of football where they are not going to be involved in the game we are missing a trick."

Steve in Reading: So a superb result for Newcastle. Anthony Gordon, Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff will be nowhere near the England squad with Harry Maguire, Jordan Henderson and Kalvin Phillips in. How mad is that?

What do you reckon the atmosphere is like in Newcastle city centre right now? Vibrant, I should expect.

They'll be dancing on the tables in Rusty's. I mean, they dance on the tables in there every night, but even more so tonight.

  7. Report: Alvarez and Doku inspire late City winpublished at 23:05 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

FT: RB Leipzig 1-3 Man City

Substitutes Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku scored late goals as Manchester City recovered from back-to-back defeats to beat Leipzig in the Champions League.

Defending champions City, who came into the game on the back of losses to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup and Wolves in the Premier League, looked in complete control in the first half before Leipzig scored with their only shot on target.

But five minutes after coming off the bench, Alvarez lifted a perfectly weighted shot into the top corner from the edge of the box following a pass by Doku.

The Argentine then found Doku in space and he sped away to score a late third and seal the points.

  8. Report: Dominant Newcastle roar to victorypublished at 23:00 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    FT: Newcastle 4-1 PSG

Newcastle United welcomed Champions League football back to St James' Park in style as Paris St-Germain were overpowered in a highly charged atmosphere on Tyneside.

The French champions - including superstar Kylian Mbappe - found the atmosphere and intensity on and off the pitch just too much as Eddie Howe's side secured a richly deserved win in Newcastle's first home game in Europe's elite competition since a 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in March 2003.

The three points, added to an opening draw away to AC Milan, mean Newcastle go top of Group F.

Stuart, Dunfermline: PSG were not just off the boil tonight, they were shockingly poor. Lack of tactics, passing slow and lacking any accuracy. Well done Newcastle but I'm pretty sure my nine year old daughter could have got on the scoresheet tonight.

Alan: Let's get one thing straight. As well as Newcastle played, PSG are really such a poor side now.

James, South Wales: PSG now stands for Pretty Spectacular Geordies.

    FT: Newcastle 4-1 PSG

PSG manager Luis Enrique speaking to TNT Sports after the game: "It was a difficult night I don't think we deserved that kind of result. They were effective in the last part of the pitch and we made some mistakes, it is hard to accept that. If you make mistakes you pay for that."

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports after the win over PSG: "Amazing evening for us, so many stories to talk about within the game.

"I am delighted for the club and the supporters what they gave us tonight was incredible.

"They [PSG] are such a good team we had to defend really well and our spirit was brilliant. We created the positive things in the first-half and the aggressive pressing which is a haul mark of ours."

  15. 'It is like a dream'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    FT: Newcastle 4-1 PSG

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United goal-scorer Dan Burn speaking to TNT Sports after game: "Crazy. It has not sunk in, I am a bit speechless. We wanted to entertain the crowd and get the crowd behind us, but we did well."

On scoring tonight: "Amazing. When the flag went up I was gutted. I was so angry for Bruno shooting, it comes back and soon as it got hung in the air I just went for it."

On playing PSG: "We knew PSG were not going to change the way they play. The times to play high up the pitch and we had the crowd pushing us, we had that for the last goal with the crowd pushing us on for Fabs [Fabian Schar] goal."

On being a Champions League player: "I just try to survive at that apprentice level and you try to work your way up. I was released by Fulham at 25 years old; to comeback and play Champions League football - I am very proud.

"It is like dream I am waiting for someone to wake me up, I am waiting for the bubble to pop. We have a great group and what the gaffer [Eddie Howe] has done with the philosophy we have got."

On what Eddie Howe has done while being at the club:

"Loads of different stuff, we have a great atmosphere and there is a lot of research done whether they add to the group."

On being the top of the group: "I can't believe it obviously. The home games are the ones we can go and attack and Dortmund is next, I cannot believe I am saying Dortmund is next."

  17. 'I will never doubt my players'published at 22:35 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

FT: RB Leipzig 1-3 Man City

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to TNT Sports: "Really good. We played a fantastic game in all departments. Everyone was perfect.

"The substitutes all came off the bench with smiles on their faces, not complaining because they did not start."

On Rico Lewis' performance: "Wooow! He is an amazing, outstanding player. I have been a manager for many years. To find a player who moves really well, difficult to find someone like him. He is 18 years old. He is a fantastic player."

On losing two games before this win: "I will not judge my team on results. Both games were not the best results but it is not easy when both teams defend with 10 in the box. It happens. There are many games.

"Despite that if you think I will doubt my players, you are wrong. I rely on these guys unconditionally. They prove it. We go to Arsenal game, rest and hopefully in May we will arrive in the competitions being there."
