Dortmund v AC Milan (20:00 BST)

AC Milan have lost just once this season, with that defeat being the 5-1 loss at Internazionale prior to the 0-0 draw against Newcastle at the San Siro, in their Champions League opener.

Since that stalemate, the Italian giants have won three on the spin in Serie A and sit second in the table, level on points with aforementioned Inter.

Borussia Dortmund, on the other hand, have won twice since their 2-0 loss in Paris, and are yet to lose in the Bundesliga this term.

  2. Howe warns of using 'too much emotion'published at 19:34 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20.00 BST)

Eddie Howe has said Newcastle must contain their emotions at St James' Park tonight.

This marks their first Champions League home game since a 2-0 loss against Barcelona in 2003.

"I can't wait to experience the home atmosphere and what our fans create," said Howe.

"I think it will be a really memorable night and hopefully our performance will make it that way, too.

"The fans will bring their positivity, noise, enthusiasm and love for the game. It's up to us to use that powerfully and positively on the pitch. You can use too much emotion on the pitch, but I think we've been getting that balance right at home."

Gareth, Newcastle: Amazing to think of Newcastle back in the Champions League, but, as Saudi Arabia announce their plans for World Cup 2034, it's a sobering thought of where the money has come from to fuel this renaissance.

Dave: Can't see Newcastle getting out of this group. Lucky in Milan, and luck may well run out tonight.

Jim: Last day of a 3-week holiday in Italy. Following the Toon in Bari, quietly confident.

  4. 'These are the games you want as a player'published at 19:31 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20.00 BST)

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier has fond memories of facing Kylian Mbappe, who has won five Ligue 1 titles and lifted the World Cup by age 24.

"I played against him - I think it might have been his debut game for Monaco - when I was at Tottenham, and I played against him for England on my debut. It's quite a few years ago," said Trippier.

"This is football. These are the games you want as a player, playing in the Champions League, playing against the best players, the best teams. Paris have got unbelievable players in the team.

"Of course we need to recognise that Mbappe is one of the best players in the world, but they've got quality all over the pitch and we can't be too fixed on them.

"We need to play our way because on our day, we can hurt anyone."

Brentford defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I feel [Trippier] has developed [his leadership skills]. Earlier on in his career he was focused on playing well and doing well and now he has integrated the leadership and communication.

He is more vocal and taken on that leadership. He has come of age.

  6. 'If you walk out with Mbappe, don't look at me'published at 19:27 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20.00 BST)

Kieran Trippier is hoping to keep Kylian Mbappe quiet tonight - even if it upsets his young son.

Trippier's son Jacob is a huge fan of the France forward.

"He's obsessed with him, always watching his clips on YouTube," said 33-year-old Trippier.

The defender joked his son wanted to walk out with Mbappe instead of him.

"I wasn't really happy with that," Trippier added. "I said to him, 'If you get to walk out with Mbappe, you don't look at me in the tunnel'."

Thumbs up from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe to the home fans as he walks along the touchline and down into the dressing room area.

One fan leans over and shouts: "You've got this Eddie."

And there is no doubt there is excitement and anticipation in the air around St. James' Park and has been since I arrived three hours before kick-off.

This is the night The Toon Army has been waiting for since they finally returned to the Champions League.

  8. 'I fully expect Newcastle to beat PSG'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20:00 BST)

Former Newcastle winger Keith Gillespie says he is "confident" the Magpies will win their opening home Champions League game against French giants Paris St Germain, adding that Eddie Howe's side are "not just here to make up the numbers".

St James' Park will host its first Champions League game in two decades tonight, welcoming European royalty and - in Kylian Mbappe - one of the game's true superstars.

"I've sort of been quite confident from the draw that we would get through because I've always maintained that we're always very difficult to beat at home," Gillespie said.

"If we can take maximum points from home games - I mean it sounds easily said but I think we can do that, especially after picking up the point in the first game.

"It's always going to be tough groups in the Champions League but you want to be playing against the types of teams we have in our group, they're top teams but we're going to show them that we're not just here to make up the numbers.

"Champions League games are very different to league games, especially in the French league where they don't have that high intensity that they play with in the Premier League.

"It's going to be difficult, we know that, but with the crowd behind us, that first home game after 20 years, the onus is on us to take the game to them.

"I fully expect us to win, I really do, it will be difficult but there's no reason why we can't win the game."

    Newcastle v PSG (20:00 BST)

As someone who grew up in Newcastle during the 2000s, the memories of Sir Bobby Robson's side in the Champions League are imprinted on the footballing consciousness of me and my old school friends.

This is a very different Newcastle United team and yes, they've had plenty of financial help from divisive sources - but the love and passion of the Geordie fans is the same as it was 20 years ago.

There will be quite the atmosphere on Tyneside this evening.

The fans are arriving and they're certainly up for it!

  10. 'We must respect Mbappe's talent'published at 19:18 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports, about injured players: "I think it is a blow because we have those players missing and they are massive for us. We knew before the season it was going to be that kind of season and who can step up and fill the void? This is the ultimate test."

Why does Tonali come in? "Sandro is one of the players in the squad with Champions League experience. I think he is an outstanding and suited to nights like this. We really hope it goes well today. He is an outstanding talent and I think our midfield looks strong today."

How do you deal with Mbappe? "We don't tend to focus on individuals and we have done our work on him.,We have to respect the talent he has. We have prepared for both and then the hard bit is implementing our plan to try and nullify his threat."

  11. 'Play the game, not the occasion'published at 19:17 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20:00 BST)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain: "[It's] very special. You prepare for the game, you are in the training ground and it is all about the details of the game and then you come here and see what it means. This is going to be a big night for us.

"It is always about the game, not the occasion. They have changed their team slightly so we are going to have to be aware of what they are going to do and then we have to hurt them. A good start in to the match wills settle us down.

Could you have foreseen nights like this? "Not in our wildest dreams. When we lost to Cambridge in the FA Cup this seemed a world away really. We have come into this game in really good form and I just want the boys to put in another good performance. "We have some very good players and then underneath the ability we have team spirit and the backing of the owners and the supporters. You need that unity. We have it and we have to try and keep it."

    Alan Shearer
Former Newcastle striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

It was a tough start to the season for them and they have responded really well in the games after that.

I thought when the draw was made, that's the group Newcastle want. That's what they have worked so hard for.

I think that was a really good point away in Milan and if they can back it up with another [good performance] today against PSG, it sets the, up well.

  15. 'Absolutely electric'published at 19:09 British Summer Time 4 October 2023

    Newcastle v PSG (20:00 BST)

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer says he cannot wait for the "absolutely electric" atmosphere that will greet him at St James' Park when the Magpies host Paris St-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday.

"As a Newcastle fan, as an ex-player, an ex-manager and someone who loves the club as I do - these are the nights you want," he told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

"This is what the team, the management staff and the fans were praying for last season when it was getting a little bit nervy towards the end.

"Tonight, to have PSG and [Kylian] Mbappe come to St James' Park, the atmosphere will be absolutely electric. I, just like another 52,000, just can't wait to get to the ground.

"I've been lucky enough to play on these nights. It's a special place on Champions League nights is St James' Park."

PSG forward Mbappe has understandably drawn attention pre-match because of his superstar talent and status, but Shearer believes the right-back who will line up against him, Kieran Trippier, has all the tools to make life difficult for the France World Cup winner.

"He's been the standout player from day one of him joining Newcastle. He was the game-changer, for me," he added.

"He came in from a huge football club in Atletico Madrid, took a chance to come to a team with a real threat of relegation.

"From that very first day, he's been perfect and all this season it's been the same. He deserves the chance to play against one of the world's best.

"I'm looking forward to that battle. You've got the pace, trickery and goalscoring ability of Mbappe and the way he just glides past defenders. But he'll have a big task against Trippier because he's playing some great stuff."

    BBC Sport

Among the two early games this evening, Royal Antwerp are in action against Shakhtar Donetsk, leading 2-1 with around 25 minutes to go.

It is their first ever home match in the Champions League, just five years after Belgium's oldest club were in the second tier.

The stand facing the cameras is completely empty as disagreements with the land owners slow redevelopment, while the club has also drawn controversy after appointing Marc Overmars as sporting director following his exit in disgrace from Ajax.

It's a fascinating club with a fascinating story, and Emma Smith (yes, I am promoting my own work) spoke to fans and journalists to get the inside scoop for BBC Sport. You can read all about it here.
