Nick Pope is very good at making saves look easy. That will give the Newcastle defence a lot of confidence. But Newcastle can't get out at the moment.

If Newcastle can survive this initial onslaught from Dortmund they can maybe start to build on some home nerves. Right now, though, it is one-way traffic.

Dortmund work it well near the Newcastle box to tee up Niclas Fullkrug for a shot he hits well but too close to the Magpies keeper.

Anthony: That looked like a harsh free-kick and even harsher booking for Lewis Hall. Long game now playing on a yellow.

    Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle having to dig in early on, as you'd expect. It was always going to be a test against this Dortmund side. Especially as they try to prove their credentials after that hammering by Bayern Munich at the weekend.

There's a shout for a penalty for handball against Sean Longstaff. The ball does hit his arm, but it's pretty close to his side.

That yellow card is harsh, I thought Lewis Hall did brilliantly. Both of them are it. Hall actually has outmuscled him.

    An awful decision!

It's going to be a tricky night for Lewis Hall now. He drags back Niclas Fullkrug as the Dortmund man tries to break and is booked.

The home side will be after the rookie full back now.

Julian Brandt is set up on the right and opts to fire a shot from the corner of the box. He gets underneath it and sends it high and wide. It was a bit too easy for him to get a sight of goal, though.

I can see a high press from Newcastle. There is a massive gap between the Newcastle back four and the midfield. They have started on the positive.

The last Newcastle player to score a goal away from home in the Champions League was Alan Shearer in March 2003, who netted a brace against Internazionale.

Indeed, Eddie Howe’s side only managed one shot on target in their last away game against Milan, with Union Berlin the only side to have had fewer away from home in the competition this term (0 v Real Madrid).

Eight of Newcastle's starting line-up are English. It is the most Englishmen in a team's Champions League starting line-up since Man United had eight in a 3-0 group stage home win against FC Kosice on 27 November 1997.

Lewis Hall (19y-060d) is the youngest player to start a Champions League game for Newcastle, surpassing the previous record of Jermaine Jenas (19y-225d) in a 2-0 defeat at Juventus in the 2002/03 first group stage.

Borussia Dortmund v Newcastle (17:45 GMT)

The last English manager to win an away game against a German side in the Champions League was Bobby Robson, who led Newcastle to a 3-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen in February 2003.

Since then, English managers are winless in three such matches (D1 L2): Harry Redknapp (2-2 v Werder Bremen), Frank Lampard (1-4 v Bayern Munich) and Graham Potter (0-1 v Borussia Dortmund).

This will be Borussia Dortmund’s 150th match in the Champions League (W69 D31 L49), becoming just the second German side to reach this total since the competition’s inception in 1992-93, after Bayern Munich (285).

  19. Dortmund eye repeat of 1996-97published at 17:40 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2023

Borussia Dortmund v Newcastle (17:45 GMT)

Newcastle are winless in their last two games against German sides in European competition (D1 L1), after winning each of their first four such matches between 2001 and 2003.

Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 win over Newcastle last time out was their first ever meeting in European competition, while they last won home and away against an English side in a Champions League campaign in 1996-97 against Manchester United (1-0 wins home and away in the semi-finals).

  20. 'The real star of the show? Eddie Howe'published at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 7 November 2023

Borussia Dortmund v Newcastle (17:45 GMT)

Matty Renton, The Magpie Channel TV, external

Mikel Arteta stole the show with his full-time outburst on VAR and the match officials. All the headlines, all the talking points are now about him and not about how well Newcastle played, battled and rallied to a huge three points.

Just as it was after a dominant display by the Magpies' B/C team at Old Trafford in midweek, there has been more attention on the opposition manager as pressure builds on Erik ten Hag.

So I think it is time to focus on the real star of the show - Eddie Howe.

Fielding full-backs as centre-backs at Manchester United (Emil Krafth and Paul Dummett having barely kicked a ball for the past 18 months) and coming away with a historic victory, before grinding out a 1-0 win at home to title-chasing Arsenal.

Despite several injuries, Newcastle still dug deep and got the win. Yes, it was controversial - three VAR checks on one goal is unheard of - but, in my opinion, the correct decision was made.

Arteta’s post-match meltdown took the scrutiny away from a performance in which his side only had one shot on target and should have had Kai Havertz sent off. After all, VAR decisions do come and go for every side.

What is guaranteed is that Howe’s 'intensity is our identity' philosophy is carried out in every game, no matter who takes the field.

Another impressive win for the Toon, who now have their sights on Germany as a massive game against Borussia Dortmund awaits.

    Auf Wiedersehen, pet.
