Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was concerned about his players' ability to maintain their high standards following last season's Treble success.

In his programme notes tonight, Guardiola expresses his delight and their response.

"I am so happy with the start to the season," he said. "I can see my players are hungry and want more success.

"For a manager, nothing can beat this. To have players who are so driven, professional, consistent and determined is all you can ask for.

"If we stay in this mindset, we will be challenging for trophies at the end of the season."

I think you will Pep, I think you will.

Young Boys are top of the Swiss Super League and on the same day Manchester City were putting six past Bournemouth at the weekend, Young Boys won 4-1 away to Winterthur.

City defeated Young Boys 3-1 in Switzerland a fortnight ago to move within another victory of securing their place in the last 16.

It would be a surprise if the hosts did not book their passage into the knockout stages but Young Boys boss Raphael Wicky is ruling nothing out.

"I think the most important thing is to believe that in football everything is possible, that you can, in one game, beat the best teams," said the former Switzerland midfielder.

"Lots of teams have shown that and I was able to live it five years ago [when his FC Basel team defeated City in the Champions League]. I think we have to transmit that to the team."

Manchester City have made the Etihad Stadium a fortress during 2023.

Pep Guardiola's side have won every single home game during the calendar year.

They took their tally to 22 with the 6-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday. It was the second time in that run they have scored six. There was also a five and a seven against RB Leipzig in March.

Sunderland hold the English record with 24 successive home wins, a record that dates back to 1891 and 1892.

If they get through tonight, Liverpool are the next visitors to this stadium.

Newcastle’s injuries were always going to make life tough tonight. But they were architects of their own downfall. Both goals were avoidable.

That Joelinton chance aside, it never really felt like they would score. Now they head to Paris knowing their Champions League hopes hang by a thread.

Dortmund were clinical but they didn’t need to be at their best.

Newcastle fans sing their hearts out, as the players applaud back.
