  1. Good night!published at 22:45 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

Well, that's all from us on an action-packed evening in Europe...

We'll be back on Saturday for Premier League action as the football juggernaut just keeps going.

    See you then!

  2. 'Really pleased with Kudus'published at 22:45 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

FT: West Ham 3-1 Back Topola

    West Ham United

More from West Ham manager David Moyes to TNT Sports: "We're trying to get a bit more possession, we certainly had that tonight. Did we use it well enough? Bits were OK, other bits not so good."

On Mohammed Kudus: "I was really pleased because he scored a couple of goals for Ajax as well before he joined us. I think for him to get another goal tonight was really important for us. We needed it at the time, we needed a goal to come from somewhere.

"He's started the game very brightly, it faded away a little bit but him getting the goal was really important because we were struggling to find any other goalscorers tonight.

"I think over the last year or two we've always had the ability to score from set-pieces. We've now got someone (James Ward-Prowse) who, I wouldn't say is a set-piece specialist, but others might put him in that category."

On Aaron Cresswell's first-half injury: "He felt his hamstring. He felt it a little bit in training but we didn't think it was enough to do much about it. But obviously it has come on during the game, we'll let the medical team have a look at it and find out how bad it is."

  3. Top four on for Hammers?published at 22:43 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

FT: West Ham 3-1 Back Topola

Former Chelsea and West Ham midfielder Joe Cole on TNT Sports: "The margins are getting smaller and smaller. We could see a real shake up of the top four. It could be anyone now.

"Before you could predict it, now it could be anything. I look at the quality teams like West Ham have got."

  4. De Zerbi in - and outpublished at 22:39 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

BBC Sport at the Amex Stadium

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi just came in to do his post-match press conference, only to be told he had to do his broadcast interview first.

So De Zerbi had to get up and leave - to come back after AEK coach Matias Almeyda has done his media conference.

I bet De Zerbi is really happy at that.

Brighton will be pleased to see that Ajax and Marseille drew 3-3 this evening in the Netherlands.

But the Seagulls do already find themselves at the bottom of Group B with a loss in their first Europa League match.

  6. 'Good start in first game is always good'published at 22:36 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

FT: West Ham 3-1 Back Topola

    West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes to TNT Sports: "We've done this to a few teams ourselves recently. We were the ones hunting them trying to get the goal. But in the end they were the ones who got the goal, they caught us on the break, we made a mistake, which gave them a chance to get in front.

"In truth in the opening 20 minutes we should have got a couple of goals, we had enough chances to do so. Lots of the ball, maybe we didn't penetrate them enough and hurt them enough and creative enough chances.

"That was probably the message I was trying to get to the players at half-time to get the goal. I was a bit annoyed we hadn't done so. But look, in the end a win in Europe, getting off to a good start in the first game is always good.

"Generally I felt we'd finished the 15 minutes just before half-time not so well, and obviously we start and get a mistake. But everyone can make a mistakes, I've made plenty in my time, it can happen. The big thing was we fought back, stuck at it, and got the goals in the end and got a positive result.

"They played really deep, we found it hard to break them down, they filled the box quite well. And when we did get chances it was kicked away or blocked. Truth is, we've been doing that to some teams recently so I'm quite glad the players got to see it from another side tonight."

  9. 'We need to learn'published at 22:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

    FT: Brighton 2-3 AEK Athens

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's Joao Pedro speaking to TNT Sport: "Difficult to say mostly because it's the first time Brighton have been in the Europa League and today we conceded a goal too early. We have to see what we can improve and be ready for the next game.

"We know they're strong in corners and in attack. If you mark more active you do not concede these goals.

"If we had won this game it would be better but I'm happy to score today. I tried to help the team and we need to improve for the next game.

"We lost against West Ham as well and they play similar to them, we need to learn from today."

I seem to remember some Aston Villa and Brighton fans and even De Zerbi getting a bit sniffy about West Ham’s success in Europe last year… Let's hope tonight's results give them some food for thought not to be so cocky now.

Another great European win for the Hammers. West Ham United looking comfortable on their third Euro tour in a row.

  11. 'I feel part of the family'published at 22:13 British Summer Time 21 September 2023

FT: West Ham 3-1 Backa Topola

    West Ham United

West Ham goalscorer Mohammed Kudus on TNT Sports: "I think we want to go from the first minute of the first game and control it. The winning mentality from the team was all good. We did what the coach told us and we got the result.

"We dominated the game in the first half but weren't able to score.

"For me, I think we knew what we were doing, whether we were down or up. We kept the same mentality, we do what we do best and the result comes after.

"I am here to help the team and as you can see today we got the three points.

"It feels like I've been here for a long time already, everybody has made me feel like part of the family. I just do what the coach tells me.

"The most important thing is we're winning."

AEK Athens were a very tough test tonight, they started the game better and took the lead.

Brighton managed to fight back on a couple of occasions, showed a lot of character.

Ultimately the goal that has won the game was a real fluke of a goal, ricocheted off Steele then back off the striker and into the net.

Brighton controlled the second half, fought right until the end and even through that long period of added time.

They deserved to take something from the game but there are still plenty of positives to take forward.

That won't be a game that David Moyes will be sitting the team down and picking the bones out of it with analysis tomorrow.

It was a win, it wasnt pretty, but it was a win.

Backa Topola came and made it hard for West Ham, and even got the lead. So credit to them for that.

But a little bit of quality from West Ham and they won comfortably in the end.

It is absolutely teeming down in Brighton and that probably sums up the Seagulls' night.

They got back into the game twice through two penalties but ultimately couldn't find the opening to get back in a third time. An historic night for many reasons but a defeat nonetheless.

For AEK Athens, it is the first time they have beaten English opposition in Europe since 1977.
