Liverpool are favourites to lift the Europa League title in Dublin in May, and, even after making eight changes from the side that beat Everton at the weekend, they looked a level above French Cup winners Toulouse.

Netherlands international Ryan Gravenberch was particularly impressive in the middle of the park and deservedly grabbed his second Liverpool goal after Darwin Nunez had struck the post.

He was joined in midfield by fellow summer signing Wataru Endo who also capped off an impressive night with a fine headed finish.

A few months ago it looked as if Liverpool were light on midfield quality after Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and James Milner all left in the summer transfer window.

Now though, with Gravenberch and Endo competing for spots with Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones, the Reds’ midfield is back to being one of the best in Europe.

  3. 'Hottest ticket in town'published at 22:40 British Summer Time 26 October 2023

    BBC Sport

Back in 1994-95, as Ajax were winning a fourth European Cup, Brighton had just completed another campaign in the third tier of English football, finishing 16th.

Facing such illustrious opponents - albeit in a difficult moment in their history - highlights the progress the Seagulls have made over recent years and fans packed out the stadium on Thursday for what was undoubtedly the hottest ticket in town.

The atmosphere was superb before kick-off, as supporters were encouraged to wave their scarves in the air - but they then had to be patient once the game got under way.

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, speaking to TNT Sports: "We played a great game, we played very well, we deserved to win, maybe with more goals but the most important news is that we didn't concede a goal. We kept a clean sheet, it is important but now on Sunday we have another big game and we have to be ready.

"We didn't expect the tactical disposition of Ajax, they defended with two strikers and we had time to understand the space. In the first half we played Pascal [Gross], [Simon] Adingra and Joel Veltman and in the second half we understood the space better.

"We scored the first goal after a lot of passes, we have to improve to move the ball faster, to play and reduce the amount of touches for every player but we have got the first victory in Europe for Brighton. It is a great day for our fans, our club, our owner and we are very proud to give them this day.

Brighton midfielder James Milner, speaking to TNT Sports: "This was a big win, it was important to get the first win in Europe after a slow start in the group, especially away from home.

"I think if you look at the Brighton squad, there is a lot of quality and the performances last season weren't a fluke, they obviously deserved to be in Europe. We would have liked to start the group a bit quicker but we have improved now. We've learned so much from these three games as a group."

  7. 'We have a lot of good boys and we trust them'published at 22:26 British Summer Time 26 October 2023

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to TNT Sports:

"You saw in the moments where it was difficult. Most of the time we were in complete control. We made good goals, nobody got hurt, perfect night. We could bring the kids on."

Young players: "It was more that we thought the boys really needed that now. I can tell them how much I like them, but then from time to time, we have to show it. In good moments, you can give the boys opportunities. They all took it. Ben Doak would have had minutes for sure tonight. Bobby Clark is coming back from injury. We have a lot of good boys and we trust them."

On Ryan Gravenberch: "He's a good player. I'm so happy for him that he starts really enjoying his football again. His first touch is incredible, his acceleration with the ball. He's not even half way there. The good thing is that he has a lot of things to improve."

On Wataru Endo'sgoal: "He was really strong. He scored incredible goals for Stuttgart. He played a really good game, he broke the lines with his passing. A nice next step for him."

  8. 'We needed that'published at 22:22 British Summer Time 26 October 2023

    FT: Brighton 2-0 Ajax

Brighton forward Joao Pedro speaking to TNT Sports: "First win for Brighton in the Europa League, we needed that this time for the fans to enjoy. Happy to score, to play for this team and to make history. We keep going to play for Brighton.

"We didn't win the last two games, we had a tough game against Marseille so today I think we deserve. You have to enjoy tonight and be prepared for the Premier League game [against Fulham]."

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Chambers, speaking to TNT Sports:

Chambers on debut: "I've dreamt of this moment since I was six. To top it off with a win as well, I'm lost words. I found out yesterday and had a bit of time with family at night. The reality hit."

Alexander-Arnold on Chambers: "I've seen it was seven years yesterday since my debut. I still know exactly how it feels. He's been outstanding every time he's been around the team on and off the pitch. He's a real amazing player and he's got great potential. I'm sure he'll have a special night with his family."

Chambers on Alexander-Arnold: "Trent's done what I aspire to do. Watching Trent do it gives us academy lads a stepping stone to go and recreate it. I couldn't ask for someone better to look up to."

Alexander-Arnold on goal line block: "I did it yesterday in training as well! It's one of them where you hope the ball is close to you. The ball hit me rather than me blocking it. Three wins out of three and it's a competition we're taking seriously."

Rey Pak: Gravenberch and Endo MOTM. Chaos from Nunez. Great shift from Jones and Elliot. Brilliant block from Trent. Cheers to the away fans, they were the atmosphere tonight. Love how they continued to go for it. And of course Salah scored. Almost unfair.
