Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp writing in the match programme: "Welcome to our Europa League fixture against Toulouse, our second home game of three in a little over a week and another opportunity to build on the promising work we have done at the start of the season.

"I use the word promising because that is exactly what it is. We are doing things step by step and this means being patient, working hard and having a clear idea of what kind of team we are looking to become.

"That we have managed to start pretty well in the Premier League and the Europa League while this work is taking place is undoubtedly a positive but we cannot lose sight of the need to turn promise into something more substantial.

"Toulouse will be the latest barrier in our way and we should expect a proper challenge from them because it is clear that they have the potential to be a tricky opponent for anyone."

    Brighton v Ajax (20:00 BST)

    • Ajax have lost six of their last seven meetings with English Premier League sides in major European competition (D1) since beating Tottenham 1-0 away from home in the Champions League in the 2018-19 semi-final first leg.

    • Ajax are unbeaten in their last 11 Europa League group stage games (W5 D6), since a 1-0 loss at Fenerbahce in October 2015.

Toulouse finished 13th in Ligue 1 last season but qualified for the Europa League after lifting their first major trophy by thrashing Nantes in the French Cup final.

They were playing in the second tier of French football until they won promotion at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Toulouse sit 10th in Ligue 1 with 11 points from nine games.

"They deserve all our respect," said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

"They are a really interesting story; winning the French Cup and finishing 13th in the league. They are a young team, a footballing team, they have a clear idea."

Ajax have lost six of their last seven meetings with English Premier League sides in major European competition (D1) since beating Tottenham 1-0 away from home in the Champions League in the 2018-19 semi-final first leg.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for them at the moment, though. The Dutch side are in a right old mess. They're currently second bottom the Eredivisie - which their fans expect them to win every season - and recently binned off manager Maurice Steijn.

They've won just once in the league and have drawn both their Europa League games so far.

Check out these quotes from their ex-player Rafael van der Vaart: "Ajax have to think like a relegation candidate at the moment. That’s very sad, but it’s true. You are no longer Ajax. You have to assume that you are not better than your opponent, because they simply do not have the qualities for that.”

All in all, a good time for Brighton to be facing them then!

Liverpool will open up a five point lead at the top of the Group E if they win. The Reds' next Europa League game after this is in France against Toulouse on 9 November.

  9. Veltman on his old club, winning mentality and his teammatespublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 26 October 2023

    Brighton v Ajax (20:00 BST)

Brighton defender Joel Veltman is looking forward to playing against his former team Ajax in the Europa League: "I played there since I was 10-years-old, for almost 18 or 19 years, so it’s a special game. It’s a special feeling when you play against your old club, maybe the away game will be more special in Amsterdam at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

"At Ajax we had to win every game, but now sometimes we can lose [at Brighton] and it's a bit less of a crisis. But we want to win every game at the moment, that's always been the case since I have been here. That is what I really liked over here.

"It doesn't matter if we play against Manchester City or whatever, we’re disappointed if we lose points, so it’s similar with my experience there [at Ajax]."

Veltman on losing Solly March and Danny Welbeck to long-term injuries: "They are big players for us, so it's a massive disappointment. But we have to deal with it, like the manager said, and we have to move on. We have a big game coming up tomorrow and we have loads of players who can fill their gap, we have enough quality to do that."

Veltman on Ajax's worst start to a season in their professional history: "They’re in a bad spot, for them, I would say. Lots of things are going on, especially off the pitch, so it's difficult to say. They fired their coach a couple of days ago, which can be a positive thing for them but it can also be a negative thing. It’s difficult to say how they will react on the pitch."

Before kick-off at Anfield, Liverpool will mark the sad passing of Everton chairman Bill Kenwright by playing The Hollies song 'He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother'.

Liverpool say the song has been chosen because - as part of his and Everton’s unwavering support for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster - Kenwright personally picked it to be played at Goodison Park following the release of the Hillsborough Independent Panel Report in September 2012.

Back in 2013, Kenwright paid tribute, external to victims of the Hillsborough disaster at a remembrance service at Anfield.

Also in Kenwright's honour tonight, the players, managers and backroom staff will wear black armbands.
