Netherlands manager Andries Jonker speaking to ITV4 on counterpart Sarina Wiegman: "

"It is very unusual. We've known each other for about 30 years, have gone through a lot together, she was my captain in a previous spell coaching the national team. Now we face each other in a sold out stadium for a very important match. A great moment for both of us.

On her trajectory as a coach: "When she was my captain in the national team she was highly educated, had a good connection with the team, very tactically intelligent, so I knew she would go on to be a good coach. I can't say yes she was going to be a top coach like she is now, because back then I didn't know, but she was always going to be a good coach."

Sarina Wiegman has enjoyed huge success while in charge of the Netherlands, guiding them to a first major trophy at Euro 2017, then a World Cup final in 2019.

She joined England in September 2021, leading them on a 30-game unbeaten run which included victory at Euro 2022, before reaching the 2023 World Cup final.

Asked to compare the two different experiences this week, Wiegman said: "The big difference is that the women's game has developed a lot. In England, everything is three times as big.

"The media attention is bigger, the number of players we have available is more, the league is fully professional, also the FA [Football Association] is a much bigger association than the Dutch association is.

"So many people are involved in the women's game. We are a few steps ahead."

World Cup semi-finalists Sweden are up and running in the Uefa Women's Nations League after winning 1-0 away to Italy.

Chelsea midfielder Johanna Rytting Kaneryd scored the winner in Castel di Sangro.

Sweden were heading for a point in their opening game against world champions Spain on Friday before Mariona Caldentey won it after scoring a 96th minute penalty.

Manchester City's Filippa Angeldal and Arsenal duo Stina Blackstenius and Lina Hurtig started for Sweden against Italy along with Everton's Nathalie Bjorn.

Italy's starting XI featured Everton duo Martina Piemonte and Aurora Galli. Italy, who won 1-0 away to Switzerland on Friday, also have three points from two games.

There's already a decent atmosphere in Utrecht as the Dutch fans, draped in orange, have been cheering loudly as the teams warmed up.

Seats have got flags on them for when they arrive and the music has been blasting in the build-up to kick-off.

Well, for better or for worse, I can tell you that, like last Friday, there will be no VAR or goalline technology tonight.

Against Scotland I found myself slipping into the habit of looking on as a pundit and thinking, we could be performing much better here.

But then again, if I put myself in the players' position, it is a quick turnaround and a lot for them to adjust to in a short space of time.

The Scotland players have probably had a few more competitive games than England [pre-season wise] too.

At the end of the day we had the better quality of player and that probably won us the game. That small margin decided those key moments.

So, last time out England held on against Scotland at Sunderland's Stadium of Light to win their first Women's Nations League match.

The World Cup finalists were tested by a gutsy Scotland team who created plenty of opportunities as they continued to showcase their progression under manager Pedro Martinez Losa.

Headed goals from Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp gave the Lionesses the lead before Kirsty Hanson got one back for Scotland in first-half injury time.

Scotland were aggrieved not to have had a penalty earlier for a shove on Martha Thomas by England captain Millie Bright in the box and they hit the crossbar in the second half with a dipping volley from Hanson.

England defender Lucy Bronze has spoken this week about the Lionesses' aim to emulate the United States in being trailblazers for the women's game with regards to setting standards off the field.

"It's something that the USA have been doing for many years. Now England are a team that are able to lead the way as well. We want to set the standard on and off the pitch to help other countries to be able to set the standard."

Bronze was a member of the leadership group that held talks with the FA regarding performance-related bonuses.

She added, "We're happy to have been able to draw a line on the bonuses and move forward with the FA and the PFA [Professional Footballers' Association], making sure we are challenging women's football."

Can we expect another Lauren Hemp masterclass tonight?

The Manchester City winger scored three goals at the Women's World Cup this summer, playing in a more central position up front alongside Arsenal striker Russo.

Hemp says she enjoys being "challenged" by Wiegman and has "confidence and belief" in her game.

"Sarina is a fantastic coach. Ever since she got the job, I feel like she's taken this team to a whole new level. For me personally, I'm learning every single day," added Hemp.

"I feel like I'm getting so much better and getting so much more confident as the days go by. We've got a great coaching staff and she's the head of it. She's unbelievable.

"At the end of training sessions, we're always doing parts that help us individually so I feel like that's something that I'm implementing in my game."

The praise for Wiegman keeps on coming!

Netherlands coach Andries Jonker emphasised the respect his nation has for the Lionesses head coach in his pre-match press conference, highlighting that her success has garnered attention across the game in their homeland.

"Johan Cruyff was a completely different coach. [Wiegman] is more in the line of Louis van Gaal. That means organisation, structure and philosophy," added Jonker.

He added, "I think she is extremely respected in Holland for her work with the national teams of Holland and England. She is being seen by everybody - and I mean everybody - as an outstanding coach."

Netherlands captain Sherida Spitse, who played under Wiegman during their Euro 2017 success, said the England manager "means a lot" to people back home.

"She not only did a lot of stuff for us but for other people in women's football in the Netherlands," said Spitse.

"In the whole world, in football, I think she is a big name. She is a woman that knows really what she wants. If she wants something, she is going for it 100%.

"That is what you are seeing also [in England]. That is what she did here in the Netherlands. It is nice she is in England for you guys, but she is still a Dutchwoman."

The Lionesses manager led the Netherlands to Euro 2017 glory on home soil before winning Euro 2022 with England at Wembley.

Tonight is the first time she has returned to her homeland with her current side.

"Of course I have some memories here and so do the English. It's very nice being here," said Wiegman in the build-up.

"It's just very special. We know each other really well. I know most of the staff, the players and it's in the Netherlands so lots of people will be in the stands.

"When we arrived, we have some memories that came back. Of course you have to move on. We have a big game so we have to focus on that game."

    The permutations continue!

The four group winners in League A of the Nations League meet in the semi-finals, with the two finalists joining hosts France as the European representatives in the 2024 Olympic Games.

If France are among the finalists, the third-placed team fills the remaining slot for the 12-team tournament in Paris.

England are the nominated nation to secure qualification for the Olympics on behalf of Team GB, Scotland, Wales and Norther Ireland's placings won't count towards Paris 2024!

The Nations League will also affect qualification for Euro 2025, which will be held in Switzerland.

The teams that finish in the top two in each group will remain in League A for the European qualifiers, which start in spring 2024 and follow the same format as the Nations League.

The four third-placed teams in League A face a play-off against the second-placed teams in League B in February, with the winner playing in League A for the Euro 2025 qualifiers.

The fourth-placed teams are relegated to League B, replaced by the group winners from that league.

This is the Stadion Galgenwaard, the home of Utrecht FC, that will host tonight’s fixture and where England trained yesterday afternoon.

It’s within walking distance or two metro stops from the city centre, and just a short train ride from Amsterdam.

With a capacity of around 23,000, it’s expected to be sold out for tonight’s game and we know from the scenes at Euro 2017 that the Oranje will be out in numbers supporting the Netherlands.

It hosted four group-stage matches during that tournament and England boss Sarina Wiegman, who was in charge of the Netherlands in 2017, said memories of those games came flooding back to her as their coach arrived in Utrecht for yesterday’s media conference.

It will feel like home for Wiegman and she is expected to get a very warm welcome from the Dutch fans - but she will know her players will be in a hostile environment when the game kicks off and they will need to manage that.

There is just one change to the Netherlands side who lost to Belgium in their last match.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar returns after picking up a knock which ruled her out of the Belgium match.

There's plenty of WSL representation including Manchester City's club-record signing Jill Roord and Arsenal's Victoria Pelova.

Netherlands XI: Van Domselaar, Pelova, Dijkstra, Janssen, Brugts, Groenen, Spitse, Van de Donk, Beerensteyn, Roord, Martens.

Sarina Wiegman makes two changes to the England side that beat Scotland on Friday and neither are hugely surprising.

Ella Toone comes in for Lauren James in midfield as Wiegman continues to rotate the two.

Alessia Russo, who was rested against Scotland, returns up front as Chloe Kelly drops out.

England XI: Earps, Carter, Bright, Greenwood, Bronze, Stanway, Zelem, Toone, Daly, Russo, Hemp.
