  4. 'Lots of signings can go either way'published at 15:57 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Everton v Brighton (Sun, 13:00 BST)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport reporter

Everton boss Brian Sorensen said striker Katja Snoeijs had a problem with her hand on international duty and is ruled out of this weekend's WSL opener against Brighton at Walton Hall Park.

But the Blues will have several news signing available and Sorensen says he is happy with their transfer business this summer.

"Yeah we are really happy. We planned it very early," said Sorensen.

"I know the news was coming out in the summer but it was business done in January and well before the summer."

Opponents Brighton had a high turnover of players during the window, including two goalkeepers brought in on transfer deadline day.

"I think bringing a lot of names in can go either way," added Sorensen.

"When [Brighton manager] Melissa Phillips came in, they started to play a different type of football.

"But when you have such a big turnover you still have to get them playing. It’s been hard to analyse them because we don’t know how they are going to start and they have so many different options.

"They have to be bedded in and get on the same page. Hopefully we have a head start there."

  5. Duggan progression 'really nice'published at 15:54 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport reporter

Everton boss Brian Sorensen says he is pleased with his summer transfer business - adding most of it was planned in January.

The Toffees have added defender Megan Campbell to their squad on a free deal this morning and Sorensen says they now have "depth" in that department.

They also have England striker Toni Duggan back in training following the birth of her first child.

"Toni is in training with us and has done hard work over the summer to get back. For Toni, it’s about just keeping to add on.

"She’s still not there yet but she’s working to do everything she can to get there.

"We need to get her physically right then we’ll see where she ends up. She’s doing really well. It's really nice to see her progression."

Aston Villa manager Carla Ward was emotional in her press conference earlier this morning as she paid tribute to Sheffield United midfielder Maddy Cusack, who died at the age of 27 last week.

Ward signed Cusack for Sheffield United in 2019.

"I signed Maddy. Maddy was a player of mine for four years and I've had an unbelievable relationship with her," Ward said.

"So, when I got the call from Sheffield United on Thursday morning it was tough, very tough. And I think everybody who knew Maddy knew what an exceptional human being she was and what a footballer and character.

"I had a very close relationship with her and only spoke to her a couple of weeks ago so, it's tough."

  7. 'Mannion out for 8-10 weeks'published at 15:48 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport reporter

There's a few injury concerns for Manchester United ahead of their WSL season opener with Aston Villa.

Marc Skinner says Jayde Riviere is back in full training today after recovering from a knee injury she picked up in pre-season against Bayern Munich.

She will be "in contention" for selection but Aoife Mannion tore her thigh so will be out for around 8-10 weeks still.

  8. Assessing Chelsea's challengerspublished at 15:46 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    The WSL returns this weekend

    Ellen White
Former England striker on BBC's Football Daily podcast

I think it's hard. The tiredness, the fatigue. The mental fatigue as well as you're going for the Champions League as well as the WSL. You want to be going on all fronts. The Champions League is the one that has eluded them.

It is going to be tough and with Arsenal not getting through into the Champions League is tough for them to take and you can tell by the way Jonas [Eidevall] is talking, I think they are just going to go all guns blazing for the title. They have to. We are going to find out how far, Manchester United could get into the Champions League and Man City aren't so are they going to push again?

And then also the likes of Villa. Are they going to be pushing at the top as well?

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall says Beth Mead has returned to full training after recovering from an ruptured anterior cruciate ligament, which she suffered in November.

"That means she can be in contention for matchday squads and of course, very soon - maybe even at the weekend - to play minutes," Eidevall said.

"We still have another training to do, but she is getting very close."

  10. 'We take every competition seriously'published at 15:42 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

West Ham v Man City (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor has been speaking to the media ahead of the WSL's return this Sunday:

"[We want] to win. We take every competition seriously and none more so than the WSL."

On the UEFA Women's Champions League: "It is what it is. It’s really tough now because the competition is becoming so competitive but for us it’s about continuity. We don’t want to have to qualify, we want to win the league and that gets you in the group stages outright. We want to miss that out. We know how tough it is to win the WSL because it’s 22 games and the level is improving all the time."

"Of course you want a good start and there are no easy starts so to speak. If you look at Chelsea in the last few seasons when they won the league, they lost their first game. It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish. We want to improve on our start for sure but hopefully with the continuity of the squad we have, all the signs are there for us to try and make a good start. We can’t guarantee it but we can see what happens."

  11. 'You hope players can hit the ground running'published at 15:39 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

West Ham v Man City (Sun, 15:00 BST)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport

Manchester City manager Gareth Taylor was asked about summer signing Jill Roord in his news conference, before the trip to face West Ham this Sunday:

"Midfielders have to be prepared to score and there’s no doubt Jill has got that capability. She’s a top player and has settled in really well. It’s testament to the group we have here that players can slot in straight away. It’s a really good signing for us and one we’re really pleased to have for the next two to three years, and hopefully to progress us further."

On continuity: "I’m not sure, I think continuity is something I’ve not really experienced in terms of a settled squad in the seasons I’ve been here. Now finally we’ve definitely got there. There’s circumstances as to why that’s happened. You’re looking to secure players for long periods. Two-year contracts used to be probably the longest contract you’d see in the women’s game before. You hope players can hit the ground running pretty soon. For us it’s been a different kind of summer. We were very clear in what our objectives were. The most important thing for me was the players we wanted to keep. Trying to create a settled group as much as we possibly can is the way forward and the way to try to work."

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil, speaking about Matheus Nunes in his news conference before the match against Manchester City: "A talented player. He moved for that amount of money to the best side in the world. It shows the quality he has. I knew that from the weeks I spent with him. An incredibly talented boy.

"It looks like he has played a decent part in their recent games. I expect him to play and like all their fantastic players, we have a plan in place."

Will he get a warm reception from the Wolves fans? "I have no idea. You get mixed. When people leave like that, I'd suggest it's not [positive]."

  16. 'We know we can go there and win'published at 15:27 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Nottingham Forest v Brentord (Sun, 14:00)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking in his news conference about the test of playing Nottingham Forest away: "Nottingham are a good team. They have improved the squad with several very good players, and we know that they’re a very difficult team to face at their home ground.

"It will be a difficult task, but we trust ourselves and we know that we can go there and win.

"It’s important to look at our performances so far; we had one bad performance against Everton and the rest have been good or very good.

"Against Arsenal on Wednesday night was a very good [performance] again. We just need to keep doing what we’re doing well – keep getting into the right positions and creating chances – and we will be fine. Eventually it will go in the back of the net, I don’t doubt that."

  17. Damsgaard 'has had operation' - Frankpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Nottingham Forest v Brentord (Sun, 14:00)

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking about midfielder Mikel Damsgaard ahead of Sunday's match against Nottingham Forest: "He saw a knee specialist and had a minor operation this week,”.

"Everything looked good in terms of the bigger parts that we could be worried about and that’s positive.

"They cleaned the knee and hopefully that’s the bit that will help him. We hope he will be back soon, but there is no timeframe. We will see how things settle down and then we will see how close he is."

  18. Brighton are 'imposing' - Emerypublished at 15:23 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Aston Villa v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Aston Villa

"Even when they lost the game against West Ham, they were imposing.

"I really appreciate a lot how they are playing and I think it is something different in football that they are showing.

"For me and for us it is a big challenge.

"I think it is a new match. A tough, tough match. We impose ourselves at home and tomorrow will be more difficult than usual.

"Some matches are special and different because we are three points behind them and we have to use our supporters and our stadium to have or supporters with us and I think it will be an amazing match."

  19. Dunk 'difficult to replace' - De Zerbipublished at 15:20 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Aston Villa v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, speaking at his news conference about the importance of Lewis Dunk and his return: "Last time the first XI was not the best first XI we could play, we could choose. But I expect a really tough game.

"I think we have fit players different than the others. Dunk and Kaoru Mitoma are different in terms of personality ands characteristics.

"For example, Pascal Gorss in midfield gives us more personality and courage and he can be important in build-up and one of the best [at] scoring goals for us.

"And Lewis, it is difficult to replace him. He is very important."

  20. 'Aston Villa have a lot of very good players'published at 15:17 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Aston Villa v Brighton (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, speaking at his news conference about Aston Villa's quality: "You can prepare but it is the big players. It is not enough to prepare or plan the defensive phase.

"Watkins is a big player but Villa they have a lot of very good players. Diaby, Douglas Luiz, McGinn.

"It is a big team. A great team."
