  1. WSL predictions: Arsenal will push Chelseapublished at 08:53 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    The WSL returns this weekend

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport

    Predicted finish: 2nd

This could be Arsenal's best chance to overtake Chelsea given they will be without Champions League football, having failed to progress from the qualifying rounds. But they have some big players still injured or returning after long-term lay-offs. The North London club have made some good signings, but they also lost key centre-back Rafaelle Souza in the summer, as well as having to contend with England captain Leah Williamson being absent with an anterior cruciate ligament injury. I think they will give Chelsea a real run for their money and finish above the two Manchester teams, although they might also just miss out on the title.

  2. WSL predictions: Chelsea to top the tree - again!published at 08:44 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    The WSL returns this weekend

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport

    Predicted finish: 1st

Winning five WSL titles in a row would be a special achievement - and I think Chelsea will do it. They have been the team to beat for several years and, while their rivals continue to try and catch up, the West London club continue to strengthen their squad. They have added even more quality and European experience to their ranks this summer and they showed last season that, even with injuries, they have strength in depth. That might be what gives Chelsea the edge over their rivals...again.

  3. WSL predictions: Brighton dark horses?published at 08:40 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

    The WSL returns this weekend

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport

    Predicted finish: 6th

Under the management of American Melissa Phillips, who was appointed in April, Brighton are in good hands and they showed signs of progression at the end of last season as they secured WSL safety. They have made some strong signings this summer too, such as two-time Champions League winner Pauline Bremer, and Phillips seems to have finally given them an identity and a good structure to build on. Perhaps it is ambitious to think they will climb five places in the table from where they finished last season, but they are my dark horses and I think they will surprise teams.

  5. Van de Ven on Van Dijk, Romero and his Premier League ambitionpublished at 08:31 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Tottenham v Liverpool (Sat, 17:30 BST)

Netherlands defender Micky Van de Ven hopes to replicate compatriot Virgil van Dijk to become one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League.

And Tottenham’s 22-year-old summer signing feels his burgeoning partnership at the heart of the Spurs defence alongside Argentine World Cup winner Christian Romero will help him achieve his goal.

"I think Virgil was the last couple of years and this year also one of the best defenders in the Premier League, for sure," said Van de Ven, as Tottenham prepare to host Van Dijk's Liverpool on Saturday (17:30 BST).

“That is my ambition to be one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and I will work hard for it to make it happen."

On his partnership with Romero he added: “I think it naturally happened on the pitch and we felt each other quite fast.

“I think I know what Cuti's (Romero's) qualities are and Cuti knows what my qualities are, so we know what we expect from each other. I have his back and he has my back.

"Cuti is just an amazing player and I know when I run in one direction, he is in my back because he is always there. We just feel each other and of course it is amazing when you have this as a centre-back duo.

"I think I make him maybe more calm and he makes me more aggressive. He will (always) be a more aggressive player and I am a more calm player, but it fits each other well."

On testing that partnership against in-form Liverpool, Van de Ven added: “We are going to play our own way and play like we want to play. We don't have fear for Liverpool.”

  6. Son's sensational finishingpublished at 08:23 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Tottenham v Liverpool (Sat, 17:30 BST)

Son Heung-min has been in fantastic form for Tottenham this season.

The stats above show the biggest xG overperformers since Son's debut in the Premier League in 2015.

You can see the South Korea forward has greatly out-performed the number of goals he would have expected to score from chances he has had.

Son perhaps blended into the shadows when Harry Kane was at the club but it is clear to see he is truly ruthless in front of goal.

  7. 'Strength in depth will be so important over the course of a long season'published at 08:17 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Jurgen Klopp certainly has plenty of top-quality options these days, and it was noticeable just how strong Liverpool’s bench was against West Ham United on Sunday, with the likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Diogo Jota, Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo among their star-studded subs.

All four came on and helped Liverpool secure the victory. All of the subs that day would probably walk into most other teams. It underlines the real strength in depth they have, which will be so important over the course of a long and possibly congested season in league and cups.

Competition for places is vital for any club, and we saw how well Joel Matip and Joe Gomez played – remember there is still no Trent Alexander-Arnold for the moment - and there may be players on Wednesday who’ll have another chance to impress the manager and stake a claim.

That Tottenham game looks fascinating given Spurs' strong start to the season, with both sides knowing a win could give them huge belief in the pursuit of Manchester City at the top.

  8. Tottenham v Liverpool - the statspublished at 08:04 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Tottenham v Liverpool (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    • Tottenham have won just one of their last 21 Premier League games against Liverpool (D6 L14), a 4-1 win at Wembley Stadium in October 2017.
    • Liverpool have scored at least once in each of their last 15 Premier League games against Spurs. However, they've also only kept two clean sheets in that run, with both sides finding the net in each of the last six meetings between the sides.
    • Tottenham will be looking to start a Premier League campaign with a seven-game unbeaten run for just a third time (unbeaten in their first 12 in 2016-17 and fist seven last term).
    • Liverpool’s current 17-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League (W12 D5) is 10 games longer than any other side’s (Arsenal and Spurs both 7). Since their last defeat in the competition (4-1 v Man City back in April), only Man City (43) have won more top-flight points than the Reds (41).
    • Son Heung-min has scored five goals in his last three Premier League appearances, as many as in his previous 17 beforehand. However, all five have come away from home, with the Spurs forward goalless in his last four Premier League games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
    • Mohamed Salah has either scored (six goals) or assisted (nine assists) a goal in each of his last 12 Premier League appearances, including all six of Liverpool’s league games this season (three goals, four assists.
  9. 'Still some work to do'published at 07:58 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Tottenham v Liverpool (Sat, 17:30 BST)

Michael Brown pundit bannerImage source, BBC Sport

Jurgen Klopp has said he is building a new Liverpool and that is what is happening. They have gone about their job quietly and crept up the table away from everything. They will be really delighted.

This weekend [against Tottenham] is a huge task for them and we will have to see how their midfield stacks it.

In modern football, you see the number-six role, which the likes of Rodri at Manchester City have mastered. Who does it for Liverpool, especially against James Maddison who will try and get into pockets?

That is the question for me - what is their structure? It depends on what they do in the wider areas but I do not know who will be the natural sitter every week. I think there is still some work to do.

At Spurs, Liverpool will open it up and play back-to-front quickly and that will empty the space. It's a really big game to see where these two clubs are and to show how Liverpool do things against the bigger teams. I think they need to win again to keep right on at Manchester City.

It will be really interesting to see how they cope.

  10. Szoboszlai enjoying start to life on Merseysidepublished at 07:51 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Tottenham v Liverpool (Sat, 17:30 BST)

    Dominik SzoboszlaiImage source, Getty Images

Dominik Szoboszlai has found himself slipping into life at Liverpool more quickly than many observers took to learning to say his name.

The midfielder was a £60m purchase from RB Leipzig in the summer transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looked to rebuild the centre of his team after the departures of stalwarts Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

The versatile 22-year-old has played in all six league games so far the season and impressed Reds fans once again after he came off the bench in their League Cup victory of Leicester on Wednesday night, scoring a stunner from outside the box - a goal he called "one of the best for sure".

While goals aren't what Szoboszlai has been brought in for, he isn't afraid of having a go as Klopp alluded to after the game: "I don't have to tell him to shoot, he knows better than I - he's really good. That is a really good skill. It was a super goal."

In fact, the Hungary international tops the Liverpool midfield charts for shots taken in the league this season and places in the top 10 across all midfielders in the Premier League.

Speaking after the match, Klopp also praised Szoboszlai for his overall work-rate since his arrival, adding: "Since the first minute of training he has been impressive. He is a top bloke, a really top guy."

    And you can see why.

Szoboszlai comes in the top four for total touches and top six for total passes in the league this season compared to other midfielders.

Showing his willingness to get involved across the pitch and take players on, in the Liverpool midfield ranks he finds himself top for duels.

Much of the talk among Liverpool fans last campaign was the need to rebuild their aging midfield and, if his start is anything to go by, with Szoboszlai they could have found the foundations for just that.

    Most midfield touches in Premier League: 1. Rodri 2. Y Bissouma 3. E Fernandez 4. D Szoboszlai

    Most attempted passes in PL: 1. Rodri 2. E Fernandez 3. Y Bissouma 4. D Rice 5. P Gross 6. D Szoboszlai

  11. ‘Liverpool have significant global reach’published at 07:42 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Liverpool lost £100m of revenue during the Covid-19 pandemic, also spent about £50m on a new training ground in Kirkby which opened in 2020, as well as £12m re-purchasing their previous Melwood training base for use by the women's team.

The ongoing development of the Anfield Road Stand is going to cost an estimated £80m, and follows the completion of the new £114m Main Stand which opened in 2016.

The Reds also spent about £145m on transfers in the summer, bringing in midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch.

FSG are understood to be keen to reduce the bank debt the club has accrued through the financing of those recent infrastructure projects, and the new cash injection will help cover those costs rather than be directly used on future player transfers.

"We look forward to building upon the long-standing relationship with Dynasty to further strengthen the club's financial position and sustain our ambitions for continued success on and off the pitch," added Gordon.

FSG, who bought Liverpool in £300m deal in 2010, said in November 2022 they "would consider new shareholders" and the new investment for a small percentage of the Anfield side brings that process to an end.

Dynasty's chief executive officer, K. Don Cornwell, said: "Liverpool is one of the most iconic football clubs in the world with a passionate fanbase and significant global reach.

"Dynasty is privileged to support the club and work alongside FSG to execute on the tremendous growth opportunities ahead."

  12. FSG agree to sell minority stake in Liverpool worth £82-164m to Dynasty Equitypublished at 07:32 British Summer Time 29 September 2023

Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have agreed to sell a minority stake in the club worth between £82m and £164m to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity.

The deal ends the search for new investment by FSG, who wanted to retain majority ownership of the Reds.

The new investment will primarily be used to pay off the club's bank debt.

"Our long-term commitment to Liverpool remains as strong as ever," said FSG president Mike Gordon.

"We have always said that if there is an investment partner that is right for Liverpool then we would pursue the opportunity to help ensure the club's long-term financial resiliency and future growth."
