“Belief will be part of it, obviously we have to get the tactics right," said Scotland manager Steve Clarke at yesterday's media conference.

"The players have to put into practise on the pitch what we have spoken about on the training ground. They have to play to our maximum and belief is a part of that as well.

"We have to play our game as well as we can and I believe that will be good enough to get something from the game.

“They are a very good team. When we played them in March they were probably a little bit in transition between the previous coach and new coach.

"We are improving all the time, we are striving to improve, trying to add little bits to our game that will make us more competitive against the top teams but we understand we still have a bit to go.

"We don’t come here thinking that we have to sit in and defend all night. We have to be as effective with the ball as we were at Hampden."

No Billy Gilmour? That's a bit of a surprise.

Ryan Christie will run all day and Lyndon Dykes will put himself about but that's one more forward than I was expecting.

Scott McKenna makes his first appearance of the campaign in place of the injured Kieran Tierney.

Today is the National Day of Spain, a public holiday across the country full of pomp and ceremony.

Despite that defeat in Glasgow, the locals will be in confident mood. Spain are on a run of 23 wins in European Championship qualifying games on home soil, going back two decades.

  5. Revenge mission for Spainpublished at 18:27 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Spain v Scotland (19:45)

Scotland pulled off one of their best ever results back in March, seeing off Spain 2-0 at Hampden.

Scott McTominay scored early in each half to earn a first competitive victory over La Roja in 39 years.

It was Spain's first defeat in a Euro qualifying match since October 2014 - and it was pretty comfortable really.

Yes, the visitors had 75% possession but they were pretty blunt in attack that night, with Scotland edging attempts on goal 9-8.

    It's a hugely important game, isn't it?

It could take the status of this team and squad out of this world. It's been sensational the way they've started this group.

Away from home is a different matter though. It's going to be a hugely difficult game.

You watched how much they struggled against England, if Spain reach those heights then it's difficult to bridge that gap.

In the name of the wee man, what a night this could be.

Forget losing to England last month (it was only a friendly anyway…), if Scotland get even a point here in Seville, or Norway slip up in Cyprus, then it’s time to look out the inflatable unicorn.

Why do I think we might do it? Because of Steve Clarke's tactical astuteness? John McGinn’s magical backside? No, it’s all down to my six-year-old’s lucky stowaway teddy who has made a guest appearance.

You don't want to be chasing players about here. It's very warm.

We're going to have to be so disciplined and organised so our concentration levels will have to be exceptional.

If we can get out here with a draw, it'll be a sensational result. Spain will be coming into this with confidence.

  10. Who takes over from Tierney?published at 18:08 British Summer Time 12 October 2023

    Spain v Scotland (19:45)

The big issue for Scotland is how to replace the injured Kieran Tierney.

Will Scott McKenna or Liam Cooper slot into the left-sided centre-back role in a back three? It has been suggested that Steve Clarke may shift to a back four with an extra body in midfield.

It's going to be a tough shift whoever plays...

    Spain v Scotland (19:45)

Hola! Tonight could be the night for Scotland.

Avoid defeat against Spain in Seville and Steve Clarke's men will be the first team to qualify for Euro 2024.

Scotland have a perfect record in Group A, with five wins from five, but this is by far the hardest fixture in the schedule.

In the event of a home win, there is another route to securing a place in Germany next summer - if Norway drop points away to Cyprus.

And if it doesn't happen by 10 o'clock, fear not, there are a few more bites at the cherry available...
