Scrappy. Niggly. Not very good. Wonder when the football starts?

Kai Havertz and Bruno Guimaraes sailing close to the wind and Newcastle fans furious at referee Stuart Attwell.

It can only get better - can't it?

    HT: Newcastle 0-0 Arsenal

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's been a scrappy first half, let's be honest. Too many soft fouls - they have not been fouls half of them.

A lot of desire, a lot of passion, but lacking in quality.

We are not seeing anyone create chances.

We are seeing two teams with a lot of respect for each other, but waiting for that little bit of quality in the final third.

  3. HALF-TIMEpublished at 18:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 November 2023

The whistle goes for half time.

Let's all just have a nice cup of tea and chill out a bit for the second half.

There was more scrapping than chances in that half.

Tempers flare again as now Bruno Guimarães and Declan Rice push each other, the latter angry at Guimarães for hitting the ball at Kai Havertz.

Think everyone needs a half time breather to calm down a bit.

The refereeing in this country is shocking. Like a terrible teacher giving out detentions cause he has no idea what else to do.

    Rob, Manchester

Ref’s lost control of the game already. He should be able to calm the players down without having to yellow card three of them. You can’t say Havertz tackle deserves the same punishment as the three Newcastle players.

The reaction from the Newcastle players and fans following that Havertz challenge was way over the top. The referee right to show the yellow cards for dissent particularly with the new rules in place.

Havertz is a lucky boy that he didn't make a worse connection. Out of control tackle.

How on Earth is Havertz still on the pitch?? That's a lunging tackle, off the ground, clearly going for an injury!

Oh a chance for Newcastle! Good work down the right and the ball is sent into the box, it falls to the feet of Anthony Gordon at the back post but he's caught a bit by surprise by it and can't control before David Raya gathers.

VAR will be looking at that. He's caught his trailing foot after making a genuine attempt to get the ball. It is a yellow card, but nothing more. I think the referee has got it right.

    More yellow cards!

Sean Longstaff, who was fouled, and Fabian Schar are now booked for their reaction to Kai Havertz just getting a booking.

Then there's a break in play as Declan Rice does up his laces, much to the Newcastle fans' annoyance.
