  2. 'VAR has failed us' - Naismithpublished at 17:32 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    FT: Rangers 2-1 Hearts

Hearts head coach Steven Naismith tells BBC Sportsound: "I am angry at how the game unfolds after so much good work. The team played really well, we had a game plan and we understood how the game would play out.

"We knew we would have to be defensively solid for the start of the second half which we were. The penalty changed the game and it was not a penalty and VAR is here to stop that.

"There was blocking of our players going on. The initial contact for the penalty was made which VAR should go back and look at. The referee said he was not shown any images where there was a block. Ultimately it has failed us today.

"There is a clear block on our player. As the ball goes into the box, a Rangers player blocks him out the way, what happens next is irrelevant.

"We were honest, last week we did not do enough. Today we had control, bravery when we had the ball and we had discipline when we did not. There were loads of positives but ultimately we are here with nothing because of things that are outwith our control."

    Richard Foster
Former Rangers defender on BBC Sportscene

Rangers players get a lot of stick when they are not playing their best, none more so than James Tavernier.

It was a fantastic performance from him today having not had the best display in the first half.

  4. 'Our mentality earned us the win' - Clementpublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    FT: Rangers 2-1 Hearts

Rangers manager Philippe Clement tells BBC Sportsound: "The most important thing is that it is a deserved win. For me this shows the mentality, not giving up.

"I am still watching the players to see how they react. I expect them in every circumstance to never give up and do the things they have to do together and that is what they did today.

"Circumstances were against us, but because of the mentality of the players we got the win.

"The good teams are the teams that never give up. There is not one team in the world that wins every game. The teams that never give up, they win trophies at the end. That is our ambition that is what we went to do.

"There are still a lot of things that need improved, but they are things to talk about in my dressing room

"The players turned their minds around and that is very important. There is some nervousness from the fans and it is about the team changing that and building a reputation of confidence that the fans also get behind."

From Hearts' point of view, agony.

Especially when it comes to substitute Peter Haring, whose tug on Connor Goldson's jersey at a late corner undid all of his team-mates good work until then.

The visitors were just a few minutes away from a famous win and a huge confidence boost ahead of next weekend's League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

They'll need to lift themselves for that and remember that for long spells they matched Rangers.

But in the end, they just fell short. Can they recover, physically and mentally, with a place in a national cup final at stake?

  6. 'Clement won't think all's rosy'published at 17:20 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    Michael Stewart
Former Hearts & Hibs midfielder on BBC Sportsound

Philippe Clement will not be kidding himself on and thinking it is all rosy in the garden.

Hopefully he will realise that if Rangers perform at that level, there is going to be trouble ahead.

My days, this table looked A LOT different when the Ibrox clock was on 89 minutes.

They two late, late goals from Rangers means Philippe Clement ends his first week five points behind Celtic.

Performances will clearly have to improve, but it's been a positive start for the Belgian.

  9. 'Seismic win for Clement'published at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 29 October 2023

    FT: Rangers 2-1 Hearts

    Kheredine Idessane
    BBC Sport Scotland at Ibrox

This are a huge win for Rangers, regardless of the performance level which manager Philippe Clement will know needs to be much better.

What he'll like is his side's willingness to keep pressing, keep going forward and not settle for defeat or even just a point.

The home fans were far from happy for long, long spells of the match but celebrated loudly on the final whistle as Celtic's lead at the top went from eight points on 89 minutes to five on full time.

For a new manager at Ibrox, it's results that matter, certainly in the short term. And this was a big one.

Peter Haring will not want to go back into that dressing room.

He just grabbed Connor Goldson's shirt for the penalty, it is so stupid from him and it has cost the team.
