After all the talk about Bruno Fernandes' suitability as Manchester United captain, Casemiro is given the job tonight.

Fernandes is on the bench as Erik ten Hag makes seven changes to the team beaten by Manchester City.

    Raphael Varane misses out altogether.

Andre Onana keeps his place in goal.

Liverpool have gone out at the fourth round stage in two of the past three seasons.

The Reds have won the competition nine times but lost 3-2 at Manchester City at this stage last season.

They also fell at the fourth round in 2020-21 after losing at home on penalties to Arsenal before winning the cup for a ninth time in 2022.

    Ipswich v Fulham (19:45 GMT)

You could argue they've been inconsistent, but for Fulham right now the name of the game remains staying in the Premier League.

At Brighton at the weekend, they again demonstrated why they are likely to be just fine this league campaign, going to a ground where many a side have come unstuck and claiming an impressive draw.

The next stage in their progress is to consolidate while also maybe throwing in a cup run. A win tonight at admittedly a very in-form Ipswich and this is starting to look very much like said cup run.

  8. Team news - Sweeping changes for both sidespublished at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

Man Utd v Newcastle (20:15 BST)

Manchester United make seven changes to the side who lost 3-0 to Manchester City on Sunday.

Only Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof keep their places.

Casemiro returns in midfield after missing three games and captains the side.

Mason Mount starts, as does Antony Martial.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka returns to the bench after a long injury lay-off.

Manchester United XI: Onana, Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Reguilon, Mount, Casemiro, Hannibal, Antony, Garnacho, Martial.

Subs: Bayindir, Evans, Wan-Bissaka, Amrabat, Fernandes, Eriksen, McTominay, Hojlund, Rashford.

After drawing 2-2 with Wolves on Saturday, Newcastle make eight changes.

Antony Gordon, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff are the lucky three who stay in the side.

Longstaff captains the side on his 150th Newcastle United appearance with Jamal Lascelles among the substitutes.

Promising left-back Lewis Hall is among the starters, as is Martin Dubravka in goal.

Joe Willock starts after picking up a serious hamstring injury towards the end of last season.

Alexander Isak (groin), Sven Botman (knee) and Jacob Murphy (shoulder) are among the absentees for Eddie Howe's side at the moment.

Newcastle XI: Dubravka, Livramento, Krafth, Dummett, Targett, Hall, Longstaff, Willock, Ritchie, Joelinton, Gordon.

Subs: Karius, Trippier, Lascelles, Wilson, Almiron, Burn, Guimaraes, Diallo, Parkinson.

Eddie Howe feels Newcastle are going to have to "take the hits" this season and players will need to "give a bit more" as they struggle with injuries.

The Magpies squad depth is being tested after they lost two more key players to injury in their match against Borussia Dortmund last week, along with receiving confirmation of Sandro Tonali's ban for breaking betting rules.

Howe's side face a struggling Manchester United in the Carabao Cup tonight - a repeat of last season's final - looking to reach the quarter finals, despite their "stretched squad".

"In a game you can lose one or two players and suddenly the whole dynamic and outlook of the squad changes," Howe said, "but you just have to roll with the punches, take the hits and try and find a way. That’s what we’re going to do.

"It’s not ideal for us, especially with the season we have. It’s different to last year where we could absorb the hits easier with week-to-week games.

"We now need the players that we have to step up and that will be the message - everyone has to give a bit more."

His Malmo team lost 4-0 at Stamford Bridge and 1-0 at home.

  13. The problems facing Erik ten Hag at Old Traffordpublished at 19:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

Man Utd v Newcastle (20:15 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

As he tiptoed round the thorny issue of why Manchester City are so much better than Manchester United, Pep Guardiola was careful to be both respectful and protective of fellow manager Erik ten Hag.

But in speaking about his own club, Guardiola still managed to indirectly shine a light on the current state of his city rivals.

"I said many times we are in the same direction - chairman, CEO, sport director, manager and players," he said.

"We make mistakes, of course, but when we lose or things are not going well we are not here to blame someone, we just see what we have to do to be better and find a solution.

"In my first season, we didn't win. I didn't find my chairman complaining, he supported me unconditionally. When we lost the Champions League final against Chelsea I was devastated. My chairman said, 'Come on, we are going to win it, what can we do next? Let's go.'

"When that happens we are not overexcited when we win and when we lose we are not dramatic. That's why I think the club is so stable."

In black and white, it seems so simple. Yet at United, with uncertainty over the ownership, a public falling-out between manager and players, supporter unrest and questions over recruitment, being stable is a status that seems totally beyond them.

So, just as happened during the tenures of Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, significant progress made in one season under Erik ten Hag is in danger of being swept away by regression and mediocrity in the next.

"We have to try to support him as much as we can, a lot of things are out of our hands. We hope the authorities can find his dad, we pray for that. As long as we do the right thing for him, he is one of us."

When Brenner Woolley says this is "the happiest" he has ever known Ipswich Town, it isn't hyperbole.

Woolley is the man who has commentated on more than 1,000 Ipswich games for BBC Radio Suffolk.

Before facing Fulham in the EFL Cup fourth round, Ipswich - who clinched promotion to the Championship in April - are second in the division and in the hunt to end a 22-year absence from the Premier League.

For Woolley, Ipswich's rise over the past 18 months can be traced primarily to one man - the manager, Kieran McKenna.

"Phenomenally sharp and intelligent, and a genuinely good bloke," Woolley tells BBC Sport, having previously apologised in advance for his gushing praise of McKenna.

"I've interviewed enough players to know when they say one thing, their eyes say another. But you can tell none of the players have anything bad to say about Kieran, as a manager or human being."

  18. Revenge mission?published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

    Media caption,

Erik ten Hag almost forgets the Carabao Cup at press conference

These two sides, you will likely remember, met in the final of this competition last season. Much of the pre-game hype was around Newcastle's return to a major final after their rapid rise following the Saudi-backed takeover of the club in October 2021.

The aftermath was all about Manchester United winning their first trophy since 2017.

Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford gave the Red Devils the win and ensured Newcastle remain without a major trophy themselves since 1969.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe has refused to call this a revenge mission.

"That's not our emotion as I sit here now," he said. "Our emotion is just to try to prepare and win the game. One win and we're into the quarter-final of the competition. We loved our run in it last year.

"This is a one-off game and I'm sure both teams will be motivated to try and win."

Be nice to give a little kick back, though, right Newcastle fans, especially when Man Utd are down?

Chelsea have only managed three wins in their opening 10 Premier League games, plus Carabao Cup wins over AFC Wimbledon and Brighton.

"A competition like the Carabao Cup or FA Cup is really important for us," said boss Mauricio Pochettino.

"Some players we will need to rest because after Saturday's game we can’t take risks. But in general, we will try to play our best team.

"We are going to take it very seriously because we want to go far. This is a competition we can go through in.

"It’s important for us to go forward in this competition, to build momentum, and after go to Tottenham and receive Manchester City with the trust and the confidence we can beat them also."

It's five years since Bournemouth last reached the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.

Cherries boss Andoni Iraolais is keen to keep the positivity going after Saturday's 2-1 win over Burnley.

"We have a big chance - a big challenge, but big chance," said the Spaniard.

Liverpool lost 1-0 on their last visit to Bournemouth in March. Philip Billing put the hosts ahead before Mohamed Salah missed a penalty.
