Celtic need to be fully switched on with a "collective mentality" to keep their Champions League hopes alive at home to Atletico Madrid, said manager Brendan Rodgers.

Celtic sit bottom of Group E following two defeats, with the Spaniards leading the way on four points.

"We haven't quite got what we deserved from the first two games so let's go into this one and give it absolutely everything we have," said Rodgers. "We need bravery and courage and let's see if we can cause them some problems."

Atletico are on a run of six successive victories, with 16 goals scored. They sit fourth in La Liga, three points behind leaders Real Madrid, but with a game in hand on all the teams above them.

  4. 'St James' Park is becoming a fortress'published at 14:53 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Newcastle v Borussia Dortmund (20:00 BST)

    Callum WilsonImage source, Getty Images

Callum Wilson says it is "early days" for Newcastle to be worrying about the form of their potential rivals for Champions League qualification.

When asked on the Footballer's Football Podcast if he was concerned by the recent form of Aston Villa, Wilson said: "For us, we are currently in the Champions League and it's about making sure that our league form continues so we can remain a Champions League club next year.

"St James' Park is becoming a fortress and teams are coming up here and - no matter how good their defensive form has been - we're finding ways of exploiting them at the moment.

"In the meantime we're playing in that competition also so we're trying to find the right balance between competition football and league football and we seem to be getting it right so far.

"I wouldn't say we're looking around at other teams at the moment.

"It's so early you can only focus on yourself and try and rack up as many points as you can because around Christmas time is when teams start separating and you see the teams dividing into little separate leagues.

"That will be a vital period for every club in and around that position."

Former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce says the Champions League is what their fans had been "craving" for years and it's still yet to disappoint.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast before Wednesday night's home game against Borussia Dortmund, Bruce said: "It was a really special night at St James' Park when they turned over Paris St-Germain convincingly.

"This is another huge game that the supporters will be relishing. They'll probably already be getting ready for it!

"You have to say a big well done to Eddie Howe, he's put them in a really good place. When they're playing a team like Dortmund, it's what the fans have always craved, a big European night.

"From a far I've been watching and they're a very impressive team at the moment. They've got injuries but they have strength and depth, with quality in all areas."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has said he expects Sandro Tonali to be available for Wednesday's Champions League home tie against Borussia Dortmund.

The midfielder is awaiting news of an investigation into alleged betting offences, for which he could face a lengthy ban.

Tonali came on as a substitute in Newcastle's 4-0 win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Howe said Tonali took part in training on Tuesday with the rest of the squad before the Group F fixture as they look to follow up their impressive 4-1 win against Paris St-Germain with another victory.

Manchester City will hope to keep their 100% record in Group G when they play Swiss side Young Boys this evening at Wankdorf Stadium.

The European champions travelled to Switzerland earlier than usual to get used to the artificial surface that the game will be played on.

"It is what it is," City boss Guardiola told the media.

"If Uefa allows games to be played here it's because it's in good conditions. That's one of the reasons we never train away but this is an exception.

"This is why we travel in the morning for the players to feel how the ball runs, how to move left, right, backwards, forwards. That's why.

"We'll try it and the players will know it immediately."

  9. Ajax 'in a bad spot'published at 14:41 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Brighton v Ajax (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton's former Ajax defender Joel Veltman also spoke to the media before Thursday's game:

"I played there since I was 10-years-old, so it’s a special game. It’s a special feeling playing your old club.

"At Ajax you had to win every game. Sometimes [with Brighton] you can lose and it is a bit less of a crisis, but [that doesn't change the fact] we want to win every game. That’s what I really like about it here. We’re disappointed if we lose points, so it’s similar."

On Ajax's current bad form - they are second-bottom in the Dutch top-flight after winning just one of their opening seven league games:

"They’re in a bad spot, lots of things off the pitch are going on. They fired their coach which could be a positive thing for them or negative. It’s hard to tell how they’ll be on the pitch tomorrow."

  10. Fans should be 'proud'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Brighton v Ajax (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

A final word from Roberto de Zerbi on the Brighton fans: "They don’t need to listen to anything from me because they know they are important for us and for my players.

"They have to be proud because the players are fantastic guys who are working harder than last season. They want to compete in the right way but obviously they’re upset when they lose."

  11. 'Ajax's history incredible but we are Brighton'published at 14:36 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Brighton v Ajax (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

More from Roberto de Zerbi on opponents Ajax, who recently sacked manager Maurice Steijn said: "It’s difficult because they are not in a good moment but they’re still Ajax.

"Their history is incredible and we respect them. But we are Brighton and when we play in a good way we win.

"This is a new habit for us, for Ajax it’s not - they play yearly in Europe.

"There are 22 players and only one ball, so if you are better then you can win. History is not the most important thing."

  12. 'We go into the game with total confidence'published at 14:33 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Brighton v Ajax (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Speaking about whether he views Thursday's Europa League tie at home to Ajax as a must-win, with Brighton bottom of Group B after two of six matches, Roberto de Zerbi said: "Every game we have to try to win.

"In Europe there are six games and to finish top of the table we have to win. But we have another three after tomorrow too.

"We go into the game with total confidence and total positivity. We have to show the quality of our players, which were important last season to reach here."

  13. March and Welbeck out long-termpublished at 14:26 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Brighton v Ajax (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Brighton & Hove Albion

On those "injuries", Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi confirmed that winger Solly March and forward Danny Welbeck will be out long-term:

"Unfortunately, it’s a very tough injury [for March]. We lose him for a long period and Welbeck the same.

"Welbeck is in the training ground everyday. Solly I’ve not seen after the Manchester City game but we love him and we will be very close with him to support him everyday. We have to accept that football is like this and injury can happen.

"It’s not my job to inform you about the injury, I know we’ve lost an important player for a long time but I don’t want to cry because sometimes managers do when they lose players.

"We have to move on and work out there, to find a different solution. We have to work harder and not speak too much about the injury as you just have to accept it."

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi on his side's poor form, having lost three and drawn two of their last five matches in all competitions: "I have every confidence in my players, we are fighting and trying to win.

"We are losing a lot of players [to injuries] but we are able to win and we can play better than we are playing.

"It’s a different type of season, but we are adapting and it’s important to win tomorrow. Every game is important but tomorrow is for the group."

If not Darwin Nunez then Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp does have other options, of course.

Cody Gakpo is back in training, while Mo Salah has scored eight goals in 11 games this campaign.

Meanwhile, Diogo Jota has scored seven goals in his last six Europa League appearances, despite only starting in three of those.

He is averaging a goal every 66 minutes in the competition, the best ratio of any player with more than five goals since the tournament began in 2009.

Liverpool v Toulouse (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

A final word from Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez's recent form and performances: "He’s in a really good moment. He’s had time to adapt to the new country and language.

"He’s in the middle of the team, everyone is happy with him and I’m happy with him. He’s fine for this game, which is good.

"I actually think he’s really happy. That’s what I can see on the pitch and training ground, which is really important."

  19. 'We have to play to our best'published at 13:57 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Liverpool v Toulouse (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp on Thursday's opponents Toulouse and what his side need to do to extend their 100% record in the Europa League so far this season: "Toulouse deserve all of our respect and it’s a really interesting story of them winning the French cup. It’s a massive thing.

"This year they have a really young talented football team. They have a clear idea, but how they show up here we don’t know. They got a point against PSG so we have to make sure that we’re really ready.

"We have to really create an atmosphere through the way we play. I’m sure they’re looking forward to playing at Anfield but we have to make sure they don’t enjoy it.

"We are here to win football games and that’s what I hope we can show. We have to play to our best. We will make a few changes, not too many, but we have to show we’re ready for the competition.

"We hope we’ll go long into the competition, but to do that you have to make decisive steps and tomorrow is one of them."

On defender Andy Roberston, who has had shoulder surgery, Jurgen Klopp said: "He’s had his surgery and it all went well, as good as it could be. That’s it, we don’t know how long it will take but the first step is done."

Klopp added that Cody Gakpo has returned to training and is "available for the squad," although to what extent he's still unsure.
