"[With] Kenwright it’s similar. I read a bit recently and he obviously had a massive heart for the city and for Everton.

"With all the rivalry, I don’t think we have any issues with each other left or right of the game. It shows how united we are as a city. My condolences go to the family and I hope that they’re okay."

"The team wasn’t in the best phase, I was at home and I had seen where I could come in and help. I worked hard, my mind-frame changed and I matured whilst I was out.

"I was fortunate enough to come back and help with goals and assists. I needed games and at the end of the season I was playing game after game."

  11. 'I still need to find my rhythm' - Hojlundpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

    Manchester United

A final word from Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund, who says he is improving despite scoring just three goals in 10 appearances for Manchester United - all in the Champions League - since signing for the club in August.

On his start: “It has been all right. I’ve tried my best every time I play, and I still need to find the rhythm. We have been struggling a little bit, but we are getting there now. We have had three wins in a row, so that is very positive.”

Still getting used to the Premier League? “For sure. I improve every day and my team-mates are starting to see my patterns in the game as well, so it is getting better and better every day.”

On his £72m price tag: “I know my worth. I know I have to perform every day because I play for Manchester United. In the end, I am only 20 years old and I am not the finished article yet. I still have a lot to improve and I am getting there slowly. I reckon I have had a fine start to the season and now we have to keep building and the goals will come in the Premier League.”

On building a relationship with Marcus Rashford:“ You can see we are trying to find each other. In the Sheffield game, he nearly got an assist to me, and I think he has already assisted me twice in the Champions League. We are definitely trying to find each other on the pitch and I also tried to find him with a deep pass [against Copenhagen], so we have a good connection.”

  12. 'I am living my dream' - Hojlundpublished at 13:05 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

    Manchester United

More from Rasmus Hojlund on how he has been settling in at Manchester United since his £72m move from Atalanta in August.

“Yeah, very nice. I play for my boyhood club. I have always supported Manchester United, so I am living my dream every day," he said.

On connecting with the fans; “I try to show personality and want to give 110% every time I play a football match, so maybe that is the reason why they are showing a special bond towards me.”

  13. Hojlund on Rooney and Manchester derbypublished at 13:00 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Man Utd v Man City (Sun, 15:30 BST)

With Manchester United hosting Manchester City on Sunday, United's Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund has been asked about his thoughts on the big match.

What would it mean to get your first league goal in the Manchester derby?:“It would be a big experience, so I am looking forward to it. It is always special to play a rival and if we win the game, we can get closer to the top, so it would be nice.”

Keen to go up against Erling Haaland?:“Like I’ve said many times, I don’t want to be compared to him. He is incredible and probably the best striker in the world right now. We can keep that on the low for now, but I hope I can improve and then we will see what I am capable of.”

Most memorable derby match?: “The bicycle kick from Wayne Rooney, of course! Everybody remembers that, don’t they?”

(Hojlund had just turned eight when Rooney scored that goal in 2011!)

My memory of Bill was when Everton reached the FA Cup final in 1995. Bill was on TV on the Richard Littlejohn show the night before the final and mentioned he wasn't sure where the team was staying. At the time they were staying close to where I lived, so I faxed the show to say I knew where they were staying and also put a footnote to mention I had travelled a 500-mile trip and waited outside Goodison overnight to try and get final tickets when they came on sale, but missed out when they were all sold out by the time I got to the corner of Gladys Street and Bullens Road. Bill's reply on the TV was to offer me a ticket for the final. He called me the same night and arranged for me to travel to his house in London. We travelled on a mini coach he had organised for his friends and family. Regardless of what has happened with the club over the past few years, that is the real gentlemen he was and I will never forget his kindness.

  15. 'Steadfast until the end' - Dyche on Kenwrightpublished at 12:55 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

    Everton

Everton manager Sean Dyche has paid tribute to the club's chairman Bill Kenwright after his death aged 78:

It's a very sad time for everyone at Everton Football Club to lose our chairman, someone who has been such an amazing servant to the club in so many ways.

His influence in bringing me to Everton in the first place was important and I have nothing but gratitude and respect for his unwavering support of myself, the staff and our players. It was a pleasure to share the moment of reaching our objective last season with him – a moment I know he felt so strongly about after such an arduous season, on and off the pitch.

I first met the chairman during my tenure as Burnley manager, where, in passing, he would always take the time to say hello, introduce himself and be extremely respectful to me and, at the time, Burnley.

Then, when he and Kevin Thelwell reached out to me and I eventually joined Everton, I was fortunate enough to spend more time with him and get to know him on a more personal level.

He was an incredible professional, in terms of what he did with Everton and also what he achieved in the theatre industry. Spending time with him and learning about his family, you couldn't help but be taken by his passion.

Beyond his deep love of his family, one of those big passions, of course, was football - the game as a whole, as well as his obvious lasting love of Everton Football Club.

His story - a boyhood supporter who went on to become chairman - is something so rare in the modern game, especially at the top level.

He always believed in Everton and stood by the club, even in the toughest times. He was steadfast until the very end.

Like so many who knew him, my heart and my thoughts are with his family at this extremely sad time.

    Rest in peace, Chairman.

I always liked and appreciated that we had someone running Everton FC who loved the club. Who had it in their veins. He didn't get every decision right, I'm sure he'd have admitted that, but Kenwright made every possible decision while wanting the best for the club and fully understanding the fabric of Everton. Almost every team is now run by people who are making each decision essentially to make the most money, and would happily do it for Team X as much as for Team Y. Kenwright was as True Blue as anyone else in the stands, and cared deeply about our club. That was special.

  18. 'If you're Ramsdale what do you have to do to get back into the team?'published at 12:35 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

    David RayaImage source, Getty Images

On the latest episode of the Footballer's Football Podcast, West Ham forward Michail Antonio and Newcastle striker Callum Wilson discuss the goalkeeping situation at Arsenal after David Raya delivered a shaky performance in Saturday's 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Raya has replaced Aaron Ramsdale as the Gunners' number one in recent weeks but pressure is mounting on manager Mikel Arteta to reverse his decision.

Antonio said: "If he makes a mistake in one game he's human. If he makes a mistake in another then Ramsdale will have to look at it.

"As a manager you should have your number one and then have their back and give them at least a second chance. You have to give your player some faith and he needs to trust that you will.

"He's [Raya] no longer nervous, he's not going to be on the pitch all frantic because he knows he has the trust of the manager. He can do the job that needs to be done because he's [Arteta] bought him in to play football.

"I feel he needs to have the confidence of the manager to be out there and play those passes and play the way the manager wants him to play."

Wilson replied: "I agree but, if you're Ramsdale what do you have to do to get back into the team? You have someone playing in your position who's playing balls out into midfield and they're cutting out, conceding goals where you're thinking if he could do better. What have you got to do to get into the team?

"Surely he will lose faith when the other person's not playing as well as they could be and you're still not getting the opportunity. You're thinking 'what's going on here?'"

Antonio added: "It's not down to Ramsdale, he can only do everything he can in training. it's down to Raya. If Raya comes out next week and does the exact same thing then the following week I think Rasmdale will be back in.

"I think the manager does have to give Raya that faith and it's up to Ramsdale to do what he does in training and take the opportunity when it comes."

Chuffed for Harry Maguire, he may not be the world class defender United should have, but he is more than good enough for the current team. A lot of the team could learn from his hard-working attitude.
