  2. Man Utd lack 'quality'published at 09:41 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Steve Bruce says the "frustration" around Manchester United is because they still aren't playing with "quality," despite their recent results.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, the former Red Devils centre-back said: "They've had three wins in a week* which will make them feel a little bit better, but unfortunately the performances haven't been what's required for a Manchester United team. That's the frustration at the moment.

"We're all pleased for Andre Onana and Harry Maguire because he has shown a bit of resilience, in my opinion he's [Maguire] been the fall guy and I've said that many times.

"They've had a stuttering start but all of a sudden they've won three in a week. However, we've not seen that quality that we're there to see. They don't move the ball quick enough and aren't producing what you expect to see from this team."

*Clarification: Manchester United have won their last three games, but they have come either side of the international break - against Brentford (7 Oct), Sheffield United (21 Oct) and FC Copenhagen (24 October) - rather than over the past week.

Justice. Both Onana and Maguire have been the brunt of all jokes this season, but they saved United last night on what was a very sad but important match for them to win at home in memory of Sir Bobby Charlton. Villains turned heroes.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire scored just his second Champions League goal on Tuesday against FC Copenhagen.

Speaking on the Football Daily podcast, Steve Bruce says the defender's performance at Old Trafford was strong enough to earn a place in the starting line-up for Sunday's Manchester derby.

"Of course you have to start him! For me, he should never have been left out in the first place as I don't think there's anyone better than Harry.

"The good thing about him is that he's resilient and he's needed to be because all of a sudden he was under the pump.

"He's lost his captaincy at a club like Manchester United and I thought in the summer he might go. He's been a bit of a scapegoat, he hasn't done anything seriously wrong and he gives you what he's got. He's a very decent centre-half.

    "He's now got his reward."

Do you agree with Bruce, should Maguire start against Manchester City on Sunday?

  5. Maguire is 'dominating in the right moment' - Ten Hagpublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Erik ten Hag was also full of praise for Harry Maguire, who turned down a summer move to West Ham to fight for his place at Manchester United and is now seizing his opportunity following injuries to centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

"He's much more proactive in possession, passing vertically, defending on the front foot, stepping in, and is very confident in duels," said the United manager on Maguire, who scored the only goal and helped keep a clean sheet against FC Copenhagen.

"I think he's dominating in the right moment, dominating his opponents.

"And then he gets rewarded - it's a very good skill for him, his heading - I have to say a great pass from Christian [Eriksen] as well and a very good finish."

  6. 'He's a very good penalty saver'published at 09:08 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag might not have wanted to talk about Alejandro Garnacho, but he had plenty to say about Andre Onana following his penalty save.

"He showed personality," said Ten Hag about his £47.2m summer signing from Inter Milan, who has been criticised for some of his displays in the United goal so far this season.

"He knows that before, given the levels of what his skills are, he didn't match his skills and he could do better.

"I think on Saturday [against Sheffield United] it was a very good performance and today as well.

"Don't forget that brilliant save just after half-time in the counter-attack. And also don't forget, one of his skills is he's a very good penalty saver."

Important result on an emotional night for Man United. However, this would have been an expected result for them. The real test is coming up next with the Manchester derby. Personally, I fear for Man United and I feel like City could rip them apart again.

Neither manager wanted to talk about it after the game but the FC Copenhagen bench did seem irritated last night as Alejandro Garnacho stood over the penalty spot amid the furore that accompanied the visitors’ last-gasp spot-kick.

With arguments raging over whether VAR would confirm Italian referee Marco Guida's decision to penalise Scott McTominay for a high boot, Garnacho appeared to scuff up the spot.

Jordan Larsson - son of former Celtic striker Henrik - saw his penalty saved.

"I didn't see it - so probably the referee didn't see it," said United boss Erik ten Hag.

He didn't say whether he approved.

It could all have ended so differently at Old Trafford had Andre Onana not made that penalty save in time added on at the end of Manchester's United 1-0 Champions League win at home to FC Copenhagen.

But what of the part Alejandro Garnacho played in that late drama?

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag often reverts back to a simple demand when asked about players who are performing at a level below that required in a theatre as grand as Old Trafford.

"They need to step up," the Dutchman likes to say.

In the Champions League against Copenhagen, on a night when United were honouring one of their greatest players and when the manager admitted "victory is our only option", two of his most criticised players certainly did step up.

Home and away supporters both joined the tribute before the kick-off against Sunderland.

Leicester went on to win the game 1-0 as they extended their lead at the top of the Championship to eight points.

Manchester United's players wore black armbands while there was a minute's silence before the Champions League game with FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford in honour of legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

United boss Erik ten Hag, led by a lone piper, laid a wreath on the pitch, which was then placed on Sir Bobby's seat in the directors' box, as the club played at home for the first time since his death on Saturday.

Charlton was also remembered on the cover of the match programme.

While before the game two black and white images of the England 1966 World Cup winner looked down from the glass fronted main entrance at Old Trafford next to the words 'Sir Bobby Charlton 1937-2023 Forever Loved'.

  14. 'Sporting love story with unhappy ending' - Kenwright and Evertonpublished at 08:13 British Summer Time 25 October 2023

Bill Kenwright, who has died aged 78, was the lifelong Everton fan who made the journey from Goodison Park's infamous 'Boys' Pen' to the boardroom as chairman and owner of the club.

His passion for Everton was unquestionable but it was a sporting love story with an unhappy ending as the club plunged into footballing and financial crisis under the ownership of Farhad Moshiri, with Kenwright remaining as chairman in his latter years.

Even those of us who have been critical of his time at Goodison Park could never dispute that, along with the theatre and those closest to him, Everton was a great love of Kenwright's life. He was desperate for Everton to regain their place among the Premier League elite.
