    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We have to give credit to Newcastle, they played better than us tonight. We started well, had a chance with Garnacho, but then after that they were better.

"For a long period they were better than us, and we went 1-0 down. To be fair at the end of the game we came back and had some good opportunities. Reguilon, very good chance. The offside goal. So yes in the end we fought back but we need to do this over a whole game.

On workrate of the team tonight: "You could say we defended quite well [as per the statistics], but I prefer for us to stay further away from our goal. I'd prefer us to have more of the ball and play in their half. We had our moments where we could make good movements but it was not enough. We need to be more dominant in a game.

On uncertainty between goalkeeper and defence: "In the start there were a few situations, but they picked it up and it worked well.

On travel issues before the game: "You have to deal with that, it can never be an excuse."

  4. 'Only frustration is not putting it to bed earlier'published at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "The only frustration today was that we didn't put the game to bed earlier. I thought it was a really good display, we were dominant. With Nick's [Pope] injury and the amount of extra time added there were always going to be some scary moments late on, but I thought we defended really well.

On Nick Pope's injury: "It looks bad. It looks like a dislocation. He's done it before and had it operated on and come back successfully. But I don't know what the future holds for him, I don't know if he will need an operation or not, but we will get it checked out and fingers crossed he will be back soon.

On young players having an impact in the side: "I thought both players today were outstanding. I thought for Lewi [Miley], for a player so young to come and put in his best display of the three, it is harder to be consistent the longer you stay in the team. It was his best so far.

"Tino [Livramento] was the same. I think he's grown into the position and attacked really well, so I was delighted with both young players.

On Anthony Gordon's performance: "Rightly so [he has become a hero for the fans]. His displays are all-action and high energy for the team, and I am delighted that he has started to score goals.

"It was a brilliant goal that we scored today, as a team, and he was in the right place at the right time to finish it."

  5. 'They were a lot better'published at 22:43 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd defender Harry Maguire, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's been a tough week with three away days in six days. To be fair, in the first half, we looked like we'd played our third away day in six days. To tempo wasn't there, the intensity wasn't there. They were a lot better than us. We grew into the game, but we didn't have enough in the end."

Couldn't score: "We put pressure on. We could have had a goal, we had one disallowed. We didn't create enough in the game, our threat wasn't big enough."

Marcus Rashford: "Marcus had an unbelievable season last season. This season, it hasn't clicked for him. He's working hard. Everyone in that dressing room knows what he's about."

Winless at top six: "It's not a nice stat to have. we knew it was a big chance to prove ourselves. We know the intensity they play at. We didn't do enough and we'll look to get the three points in the week.

Unsettled defence: "We've kept a lot of clean sheets in the Premier League. We've conceded a few in the Champions League that we're disappointed with. We've got a lot of good defenders at this club."

  7. 'Would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves after Paris'published at 22:37 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports:

On injury concerns and fielding the same team again: "I didn't have concerns. We rested them well, had a good time between PSG and this game to get them ready physically for tonight. Of course there are lots of danger signs for any team when you have to put them into another game so quickly.

"What I was concerned about was the response that we would have after conceding such a late goal in Paris. It would have been easy to feel sorry for ourselves ater that, but we rolled our sleeves up and were excellent again tonight.

On the joy Newcastle got down the wings: "Kieran and Tino are very intelligent players. They are very creative. Kieran has been doing it for many, many years and has that ability to stop and take a pause on the ball. Tino played a little differently today, made late runs down the wings which caused them lots of problems.

"It is always a game of cat and mouse between wingers and full-backs, because you want to get high up the pitch. I think that is credit to our midfield because you need them to perform to be able to push the full-backs higher.

"I have to compliment our three in there, especially Lewis Miley, for their performances and control today. "

  9. 'He looked to have dislocated his shoulder just diving'published at 22:34 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports:

On Nick Pope:"It will be a massive blow for us if he is ruled out for any length of time. It looked really innocuous, but that is usually the way and they are normally the more serious ones. You could see he was in distress and it looked like he dislocated his shoulder just diving.

"Martin Dubravka came on in a tricky situation with 10 minutes to go, narrow lead. which is not nice for a goalkeeper, so I have to compliment him for doing so well."

On the week the side has had: "I couldn't be happier with the players tonight. The performances we put in against three top teams were brilliant so that will give confidence, and when we get some players back we can push on even further."

  10. 'I will talk to him' - Ten Hag on Rashfordpublished at 22:32 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to TNT Sports: "We had a tough first half and said at half-time we were pleased to be in the game. We had a good comeback in the last part of the game. We will talk tomorrow with the team about it. We go back, we will talk about this and move in to Wednesday."

Biggest concern: "As I said, I will talk with my team. We had some chances. We thought we scored a goal but it was offside. We could have scored."

On Marcus Rashford: "I will talk to him and not the media."

On Bruno Fernandes: "I think everyone has seen what happened. Before that we had a very good break to create a big chance. There was a foul. We will leave that behind us."

On fixture schedule: "This week, it was not in our advantage but we will take it as it is."

On Chelsea on Wednesday: "This team is resilient. We have seen it after City. We had a bad defeat and we stick together. We have a plan and we keep going."

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to TNT Sports...

On matchwinner Anthony Gordon: "From day one when he arrived at the club, you could see the passion he had and his desire to achieve and be successful. He puts the work in every day and sometimes we have to go and get him off the training pitch.

"Up against a very good defender today in Wan-Bissaka he was very good again, physically he was so good today. It was a really good battle between the two of them.

"I am delighted he is scoring the goals now and getting the recognition he deserves."

Gareth Southgate has to give some serious consideration to selecting Anthony Gordon.

Yes we know he is loyal to players he has selected before, but compared to Marcus Rashford his workrate is far superior at the moment.

You cannot ignore what Gordon is doing at the minute.

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle matchwinner Anthony Gordon speaking to TNT Sports...

On his current scoring form: "I think it is down to the team and how hard we work for each other. I am just trying to work hard and be someone who the team can rely on and I am getting the rewards at the moment so I am happy.

On combining with Tino Livramento down the left hand side: "He has been a great addition to the squad. A lovely person and more importantly what a player. His form has been immense and I am really enjoying playing with him.

On his relationship with the fans: "They are the best fanbase in the country. The way we play at home compared to away is very different and it is all down to them."

  17. 'A great goal with the best type of finish'published at 22:15 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd

    Newcastle United

Newcastle matchwinner Anthony Gordon speaking to TNT Sports: "It's amazing to win today. It's been a massive week for us, some good moments, some difficult moments but we came throught it was a team. The same eleven played three games on the bounce and we pulled through.

"Definitely makes the result more satisfying that we pulled through with the same team. It's not just the lads that are injured, the ones that are playing have kicks and bruises, I'm limping . It's so satisfying because we know how hard we work for each other, so to get the win today is massive.

On his goal: "I thought they defended really well in the first half, so we had to work out another way to get past them. It was a great goal, good passage of play from the team, some nice passes and best type of finish, a tap-in."
