    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Newcastle left-back Tino Livramento has been such a danger tonight. His cross is deflected behind by Harry Maguire - almost a scare of an own goal for a second but side-netting.

  2. Postpublished at 43 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Joelinton beats his man and cuts it back for Alexander Isak, who shoots wide. But the ball had gone out beforehand so it's a goal-kick.

There is enough past evidence to know it is not a wise idea to let Kieran Trippier have free-kick opportunities from that position.

The England defender must have thought that was going in.

Eddie Howe couldn't believe it didn't.

That was unbelievable. Just a different level of free kick.

Trippier is so, so unlucky that it didn't drop over the line from the bar. The keeper was rooted to the spot, he wasn't getting there.

You feel if Newcastle don't take their chance they'll lose all three points with a Man Utd last minute winner.

  6. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 40 mins

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Oh me, oh my. An inch away.

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier curls a beautiful free-kick towards the top corner.

Andre Onana can't get near it and just watches as the ball hits the crossbar and bounces just the right (from his point of view) side of the goalline.

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

Fabian Schar strolls forward for Newcastle and gets fouled by Harry Maguire. Free-kick in shooting range. Kieran Trippier range.

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

The opening was there for Almiron.

He was never balanced though and was always going to be leaning back when taking the strike.

In the end he passed up two opportunities before taking the shot on and it was always going to bend wide and high of the far post.

  9. Manchester United trying to get controlpublished at 20:36 Greenwich Mean Time 2 December 2023

    Newcastle 0-0 Man Utd

    Simon Stone

For virtually the first time, Manchester United have had a couple of extended periods of possession.

They were moving the ball about quite well in the Newcastle half and making their opponents chase them a little bit rather than the other way round.

After surviving that opening half hour, the visitors will think they are starting to play their way into the contest.

In-form Alexander Isak curls a shot just wide from 20 yards. The only thing Newcastle have been missing so far is the finishing.

I'm a firm believer that if a player is good enough it doesn't matter what age you are. Just given the player the opportunity.

It is great to see local lads break into the team and have that chance, up here in Newcastle Lewis Miley has done that this season and has done very well so far.

  14. Postpublished at 31 mins

Manchester United finally have a chance to attack. They have a free-kick on the left wing which they take ages over and then Luke Shaw's cross is easily caught by Nick Pope.

As usual, United will get battered and go down the other end and take the lead. They are ridiculously clinical and will prove that again today.

Whether it is cheering when he slips or trying to make him nervous when the ball rolls to him, the Newcastle fans are doing their best to unsettle Andre Onana.

The Manchester United keeper seems to be handling it well but he cannot afford to lose focus.

He needs a lot of mental strength to get through this test of character.
