The one thing that Palace do not want to do is concede an early goal. That is a fantastic ball in and a great save. That will do Henderson the world of good.

The Champions League may be gone with no more European football here until next season at the earliest, but still a superb, crackling atmosphere at St James' Park

It is some sight as the players come out, with hundreds of randomly handed out flags around the ground being waved and a deafening roar as we get under way.

'Championship to Champions League' is one of the banners displayed at the Gallowgate end. Only six years ago, Newcastle were playing in the second tier of English football.

Lots of talk about Newcastle’s form, injuries and even Eddie Howe’s position. Seven of the starting XI today were bought by Mike Ashley, this is a massively overachieving team, good for them.

What's the reason why doesn't Poch play Maattsen at LB? Chilwell is out, Cucurella is injured and Colwill hasn't looked as solid at LB as he does at CB. Poch should really give the kid a go at LB. He did so well for Burnley in that very position.

This is goalkeeper Dean Henderson's first Premier League appearance for Crystal Palace, and only his second game this season - he played in their Carabao Cup defeat by Manchester United in September, which is when he picked up the thigh injury that sidelined him until today.

Henderson has doing lots of shot-stopping practice in the warm-up, which is wise when you consider City are the top-flight's top scorers this season, but he is no doubt hoping for an easier time than his last visit here, which came with Nottingham Forest in August 2022.

Erling Haaland ran riot that day, scoring a first-half hat-trick in a 6-0 City win, so I guess it is good news for Henderson that the Norway striker misses out today because of his foot injury.

Jimenez is scoring goals, Solanke is scoring goals at Bournemouth and when you have got a striker who is scoring then it helps things.

All that good football is for nothing, because it doesn't end up in the back of the net. It's great that he is scoring again.

  20. How much pressure is Cooper under?published at 14:48 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Nottingham Forest 0-2 Tottenham

One pundit said before a ball was even kicked against Tottenham that Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper would lose his job "if he doesn't start winning matches very soon" - but how soon?

Friday's 2-0 home defeat by Spurs was Forest's fifth loss in six games and means they have now won just one of their past 13 Premier League matches.

That run of form has plunged them to 16th in the table, just five points above the relegation zone, and leaves boss Cooper under increasing pressure.

He retains the support of many Forest fans, with the home crowd giving him a superb ovation before the game and singing his name throughout, but whether owner Evangelos Marinakis is of the same opinion is less clear.
