Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

Before the game Vincent Kompany will have been looking at his team and thinking, 'How do I deal with this Everton side on set pieces?' It is land of the giants almost with the height in that squad.

They've got Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Amadou Onana, James Tarkowski...

On the first goal it is such a mismatch between Onana and Jordan Brownhill. There was no way Brownhill was going to beat Onana in an aerial duel.

Burnley have not been able to live with them from set pieces.

  2. 'We were punished'published at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

FT: Man City 2-2 Crystal Palace

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We give away two points for our mistake and what can I say? We do everything and a team that defends in the box like so, so deep. They arrive and we are punished but we have to be more calm and composed in that position. It is not the first time but it is what it is. Move forward, learn and [go to the] next one.

"It is so difficult, the physicality of them. But yeah the penalty cannot happen. It's happened so at the end in that level they punish you."

  3. 'Our pride was stolen last week'published at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

FT: Man City 2-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "The masterplan was decided by the fact we had to get our best and most senior players on the pitch, because we have so many missing. It meant finding a way of getting both Ward and Clyne on the field. We did that by moving Ward in one and played with five at the back. Then we decided to take the risk on Eze. We wouldn't have done it at 2-0 and we thought at 2-1 it was worth the risk.

"Last week was specific in the way the game and any joy I thought I should have had from that game and any pride in the team performance was stolen by the way the game panned out."

  4. 'Patience is the key' - Hodgsonpublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

FT: Man City 2-2 Crystal Palace

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson speaking to Match of the Day: "Our first goal changed things really. Michael Olise was posing a few questions with his skill when he got up into that half of the field and I thought Jean-Philippe Mateta was excellent all through the game with his running and holding the ball up but of course, when you’re playing Manchester City in the form they’re in and with the quality of players they have, you’ve got to accept that patience is going to be the key.

"They’re going to have the ball a lot more than you and if you start trying to take chances and attack them too early, then they’re going to cut through you. As it happens, we got to 2-1 which gave us some hope I suppose and we then thought, we’ll take a few chances now and we will have a go at it and luckily it paid off for us."

  5. 'We need to be smarter'published at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Chelsea 2-0 Sheffield United

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Mixed emotions. In the first half we got it spot on. We limited them to very few chances in the first half. It’s just the naivety of our approach in the first 15 minutes [of the second half] when we went after [the ball]. We didn’t have to get after the ball.

"The crowd was murmuring a bit. We quickly went from being in the game to being out of the game. Lessons learned for a relatively young and inexperienced group.

"It’s an extremely honest bunch of young players, in the main. What we need to do is learn on the job because the Premier League is a tough place to learn – that’s what we found out today.

"Our xG has gone through the roof in terms of where it has been. We got the balance right today. We weren’t sat on the crossbar waiting to get beaten. There’s always going to be a threat the other way, but for a team in our position we were in a decent place.

"But if you open the game up to really good players they’re going to find that pass and pick you off, and suddenly you’re in deep trouble. We just need to be a little bit smarter to certain situations."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Match of the Day: "We gave away two points. We had a good performance. We controlled the transitions really well and made a lot of set pieces but Crystal Palace’s second goal cannot happen at this level. We took bad decisions in the 18-yard box and we were punished."

  7. Howe praises 'incredible' teenage goalscorer Mileypublished at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 3-0 Fulham

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at St James’ Park

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has praised teenager Lewis Miley after the 17-year-old became the club's youngest scorer in the Premier League.

Speaking in the post match news conference, Howe said: "Delighted for him. I think of his most memorable moments - the assist against Chelsea and the assist in the Champions League for Joelinton in midweek.

"Today was his moment. Did he have the composure to score a massive goal in our season in front of the Gallowgate? Yes he did."

On the fact Miley was among the substitutes, Howe added: "I'm trying to protect him. His performances have been incredible but at 17 he is playing a lot of games. He was then thrust back into action [following Joelinton's injury] and he showed his maturity and professionalism and was ready to play.

"He is very popular in the dressing room, personality wise and as a player - the players love him on the pitch."

On how important the win was, Howe added: "After midweek, that was a difficult experience for us. The players are human beings, they feel the emotion and live in the city, you can't get away from the highs and lows that follow so today they did incredibly well to hold their nerve and hopefully it will give us confidence for the games coming up."

  8. 'Tough challenge mentally to recover from exiting Europe'published at 18:28 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 3-0 Fulham

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe to BBC Sport: "Very pleased especially after midweek. It was a tough challenge mentally to recover from exiting Europe. What a great response. We lost two big players to injury. Everything was thrown at us."

On Schar and Joelinton injuries: "It's difficult to tell. They don’t look too bad. But they had to come off so it doesn’t look good for the short term."

On the red card: "I don't want to dodge an opinion but I’ve only seen it live, I haven't seen replays so no idea. VAR looked at it. I’d need to assess it myself before giving an opinion."

On Lewis Miley: "He’s come into the team and been magnificent. He’s deserved to keep his place. We wanted to rest him today, someone so young, and today he got his rewards. His overall performance level has been so high.

"Players were fatigued today. You could see we were trying to manage our load. I'm so pleased with the players.

"The emotional load is just as important as the physical load. We have a couple of big players coming back who can make a big difference for us."

  9. Silva criticises 'really strange performance from the referee'published at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2023

    FT: Newcastle 3-0 Fulham

    Michael Emons
BBC Sport at St James’ Park

Fulham manager Marco Silva has criticised referee Sam Barrott's decision to send Raul Jimenez off after taking no action on a potential foul from Jamaal Lascelles on the Mexican just before the incident.

Speaking in the news conference, Silva said: "First, congratulations to Newcastle. They won the game and three points for them. They needed a calm game after the Champions League in midweek and they had it, but it was not our fault. We gave our best and did everything on the pitch.

"It was a really strange performance from the referee from the first minute to the last minute. The first foul for Fulham was after 21 minutes.

"[Jamaal] Lascelles clearly elbowed Raul [just before Jimenez's red card] and not even a foul. I'm not saying red card, but a clear foul.

"After two minutes [later] he [Jimenez] has to be more calm and didn't challenge in the right way and the ball was not there to challenge for. I can accept if they decide it's a red card but what's difficult for me is two minutes before, Lascelles' elbow was not even a foul, not even a check.

"Everything was strange with the decisions. For a team to come to St James' Park, they are a good side and their results at home speak for themselves, you have to have quality and I felt it was a match where we could match them.

"You need referees with experience and to be able to handle the pressure."

Asked if the referee was not experienced enough, Silva said: "Clearly, no doubt."

It's been a really good performance from Everton so far. Change of shape, change of personnel, but it is the same level of performance from them.

They have been playing really well lately.

We all tune into Match of the Day to watch goals and assists and that is one of the best clearances you'll see from Ben Godfrey.

That was brilliant. His awareness. When he slides across the front of Amdouni you think it can only go one place - in the net. But he manages to hook his foot around it and clear it.

Initially it is so poor from James Tarkowski, he switches off and loses the run in behind.

But the recovery from Ben Godfrey is magnificent.

You wonder how important that clearance could be come the end of the game.

He wants to come here and prove a point and rightly so. He did great things here on a limited budget and probably thought that the way he left was undue. We saw the reception he got before the game. The fans love him here and respect what he has done.

Sean Dyche would have been looking forward to this. This would have been a red letter day for him and he would have been looking forward to coming here, with the form his team is in. This is as good as I've seen Everton play this season.
