West Ham were in the Europa League on Thursday, beating SC Freiburg to top their group.

That certainly won't help the Hammers. David Moyes has been defending his lack of substitutions during games but I just wonder if fatigue will play a part here.

Wolves are a decent team but this smells like a draw to me.

    Prediction: 1-1

Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, speaking in the Emirates tunnel a few moments ago, about the challenge his side faces today: "To win this game we have to play our best, we need play a great, great game.

"It is a tough game against Arsenal, but it is also tough because we play after three days and a great win [against Marseille].

"For our mentality it is a big challenge today, we have to show the same mentality on Thursday in the Europa League and compete in the Premier League as well.

"We won our last two games here in the Carabao and the Premier League but it is not the same. Today is a new game and a different game for us.

"We start 0-0 and to win this game we have to play one of our best games this season.

"We need fresh energy, fresh players, we have to run, we have to fight. Lallana, Milner, Veltman, they are all with great experience and to play in this type of game we need it."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta on what his side needs to do to beat Brighton and go above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League: "We have to deserve to win. We are going to have to play a good game against a really good side who have experience here. If we do that we will win the game.

"They have a really specific way of playing, of pressing, and in the line. You have to really efficient in certain spaces, decision-making to play in the open spaces and be more ruthless than we were last year."

On naming the same XI which started the defeat at Aston Villa last weekend: "I think we had a really, really good performance but that was football. They have another chance today."

Ian Wright is one of the best pundits/analysts. He knows what he's talking about, and it's a joy to see his passion for Arsenal come through without it being overbearing. And he's done a lot socially in calling out racism and helping raise the profile of the women's game. Nothing but love and respect for him.

I’m a Spurs fan and I didn’t like Wrighty in his playing days for obvious reasons. But since joining MOTD, he’s my favourite pundit - love him!

I don't think Brentford are in the best run of form at all and losing Mbuemo isn't great for them.

But for a side like Aston Villa that are in the top end of the league, they'll get a good game no matter who they play against because teams will have to play well to beat them.

Villa are in a great spot, they've got a few suspensions but they deserve to be part of the title race conversation.

I fancy them to get a result today, Brentford will say otherwise but I think they can get a good result today.

John McGinn can be more consistent, despite his impressive form, says Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.

McGinn provided the assist for Nicolo Zaniolo's goal in Villa's 1-1 draw with Zrinjski in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

While McGinn is performing at a high level, his manager wants him to be more consistent.

"He must play better," said Emery. "He is playing in good performances usually but I want more of him and I think he could play better and I think he can be more consistent.

"I am very happy with him because of his commitment, his behaviour, his example for [other players] is amazing.

"He is playing well - very well maybe - but I want more."

  10. 'Watkins to get goal in narrow Villa win'published at 13:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

Brentford v Aston Villa (14:00 GMT)

Aston Villa are awesome at home, but not so good on the road - they have only won three of their eight away league games so far this season.

If they want to be in the mix for the Champions League places or even do the unthinkable and challenge for the title, they have to start winning more away, in games like this one.

Brentford are missing Bryan Mbeumo up front but they are still streetwise, so this is a serious test.

I am going for Villa to pass it with a narrow win, with Ollie Watkins to get their goal.

    Prediction: 0-1

  11. 'Arsenal will create chances... and take them'published at 13:31 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Arsenal v Brighton (14:00 GMT)

The bottom line is that Brighton played in the Europa League on Thursday evening, which makes this trip even harder for them when going to Emirates Stadium is difficult enough anyway.

Arsenal will feel hard done by after their defeat at Aston Villa. They created enough chances to win that game and, with Brighton leaking goals the way they are, I can see them doing the same here. Only this time, they will take them.

    Prediction: 3-1

Carl: Great pundit and very humble with his comments about other clubs but also showing his love for Arsenal as a player but most of all a supporter.

Rob: Gutted Ian Wright was one of my favourite pundits on Match of the Day. Fantastic knowledge of the game would do brilliant analysis. Always said what he thought and always up for a laugh. You'll be missed, Wrighty.

Morgan: Definitely will be a loss and not the same without. Thank you for all the joy, laughter and tears. I know you are the biggest ambassador for the WSL so will remain very close to football.

It's a strong line-up for Arsenal, it's fantastic. It's the best they can pick at the moment.

It's another big opportunity for Kai Havertz but that front three of Martinelli, Jesus and Saka is outstanding.

Then you look at Odegaard who can be in the pockets and causing problems.

Nick: One of the great pundits. All the best, Wrighty.

Richie: This is a real shame. Wrighty is so passionate about the game and always provides informed and insightful analysis. MOTD is losing a great pundit there.

    • The home side has won just two of the past 10 Premier League meetings between Arsenal and Brighton (D3 L5).
    • The Gunners have lost their past three home games against Brighton. They have only been beaten more in a row at home by Manchester City (seven between 2018 and 2023).
    • The Seagulls have scored in their past 32 Premier League games and conceded in their past 20.
    • Arsenal have only fallen behind in six Premier League games this season, fewer than any other side. They’ve avoided defeat in four of those matches (W2 D2), while they haven't lost any fixture in which they’ve been ahead this season (W11 D2).
    • Pascal Gross has been involved in five goals in his past four league appearances for Brighton, scoring one and assisting four. His assist for Simon Adingra’s goal against Burnley last time out was his 40th in the competition, making him the second German to reach that many after Mesut Ozil (54).

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi says his side must be focused on a "massive" game away at Arsenal after the high of winning their Europa League group on Thursday.

Joao Pedro's late goal against Marseille gave the Seagulls a historic win, but De Zerbi has insisted they must approach Premier League matches "in the same way".

"We have always been focused on every game," he said. "Big teams are used to playing in different competitions in the same way.

"I don’t know the first 11 but we have to recover mental energies, physical energies and then tomorrow morning I will decide the first 11."

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says managers and referees must work together to help "make the game better".

Arteta was this week found not guilty of misconduct charges levelled by the Football Association after his comments about Newcastle's controversial winner against Arsenal last month.

The 41-year-old said his hearing had been "a really good, well-run process".

He added: "It's not about 'them', it's 'we'. We want to do the game better. We're all in this together."

  20. Wright to leave Match of the Daypublished at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

Arsenal legend Ian Wright will step down as a pundit from Match of the Day at the end of the season.

Wright, 60, made his debut on the BBC programme as a player in 1997 and, following his retirement in 2000, went on to become a regular pundit in 2002.

Wright said the decision "had been coming for a while" and was "fast-tracked" by turning 60 last month.

"Ultimately, it's time to do a few more different things with my Saturdays," the former England striker said.

Wright had two spells on Match of the Day, first from 2002 before he left in 2008, and then returning in 2015. In May he appeared alongside Shaun Wright-Phillips to become the first father and son punditry team to appear on the show.

"After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I'll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season," said Wright, who will be on tonight's MOTD2 on BBC One at 22:30 GMT.

"I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world."
