  1. 'Not top of the league but not far away'published at 17:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Man City 2-0 Sheff Utd

    Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola speaking to Sky Sports: "Always difficult - similar to [Crystal] Palace but maybe we learned from that. Pleased for the clean sheet, a tough month for us in Saudi Arabia but I think that helped us a lot winning the Club World Cup. We're not top of the league but we're not far away. Titles we won this season. Mood is good, now we rest a bit and have a few days off.

"We've played these types of games many times, we know and sometimes we handle good sometimes not. Against Villa they played the same system, it's tight and difficult. We didn't concede any set pieces second half and when Oscar [Bobb] came in we increased tempo in the final third and created chances.

"Phil [Foden] can arrive on the sides and make crosses which is tough without Erling [Haaland] or he has to move in the small spaces and in the pockets. Like David Silva in the past. Bernardo [Silva] and Oscar too are really good in the small spaces."

On Kevin de Bruyne making his return: "Really good - we've been waiting a long time for him. He's turning good the last week or so. He came for the trophies today for the picture and to be here and realise when to warm up and how the people support him and look forward to seeing him again. Maybe Newcastle he will be ready."

  2. 'That game was for Lemina'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Wolves 3-0 Everton

    Wolves

Wolves' Max Kilman speaking to PLP: "We set out our goal to win the game and we've done that. Now we need to rest up, enjoy the new year and go again.

"That game was for [Mario Lemina]. He has been brilliant and it's really tough what he's going through. He deserved it.

"I'm happy to score of course but the main thing is the win and the clean sheet. We have a long way to go and we can still improve so we just need to keep going."

Team-mate Matheus Cunha: "We work a lot and we enjoy to play together. We showed that on the pitch. The three points was very good.

"The goals come more easily when you enjoy to play with your team-mates and give a little more support. Every victory is a good feeling for the group."

  3. Forest's chance to end wait for United win?published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

Nottingham Forest v Man Utd (17:30 GMT)

This will be the 100th league meeting between Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.

United have had significantly more joy in recent encounters, winning the last 11 meetings in all competitions - and the last four at Forest by an aggregate score of 17-1.

Forest’s only Premier League win against Manchester United came 29 years ago, at Old Trafford in December 1994, and they lost the most recent meeting in August despite holding a 2-0 lead.

But United have struggled away from home of late, failing to score in each of their last three away in the league, and they could go a fourth without a goal on the road for the first time since April 1989.

So, could this prove an opportune moment for Forest, with renewed confidence after an impressive win at Newcastle, to end their losing streak against today's visitors?

During his time at Wolves, it was a matchday feature that Nuno Espirito Santo would produce the briefest of programme notes, containing a welcome to the fans and to the opposition team and not much else.

Not much has changed in the intervening period.

Nuno doesn't even mention Manchester United by name, although he does say it will be 'another tough test'.

  5. 'Villa deserved to win'published at 17:13 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Aston Villa 3-2 Burnley

    Dean Smith
Former Aston Villa manager on BBC Radio 5 Live

I thought it was pretty even at half-time but after Sander Berge got sent off, Vuilla had a few chances.

Lyle Foster brought them level and then Villa were maybe a bit fortunate to get the penalty.

However, on chances alone, I think Aston Villa deserve to win.

  6. 'Olise is an incredible player'published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Crystal Palace 3-1 Brentford

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze speaking to PLP: "It has been a long time coming, we’ve put in some good performances but haven’t got the results. We know what we’re capable of, especially at home. It’s a good result.

"Michael Olise’s an incredible player, it’s good to play with players like that on the same wavelength.

"We know what we’re capable of, we can create chances, it just hasn’t clicked. It showed today and it’s a good result."

  7. 'Ten Hag knows he's under pressure'published at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

Former Tottenham midfielder on Football Focus

I think Ten Hag knows he's under pressure.

He needs results. They are obviously missing so many players, we know that, but the players that have come in haven't really performed.

  8. Who will end 2023 on a high?published at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

After almost an hour of Manchester United's Boxing Day fixture against Aston Villa, the pressure was intensifying on manager Erik ten Hag.

But the Dutchman will now hope the thrilling Old Trafford fightback from two goals down which followed can prove a springboard to success following a turbulent start to his second season in charge.

Tonight, however, they come up against a Nottingham Forest side looking to edge away from trouble after earning their first win under the recently appointed Nuno Espirito Santo.

The end of a seven-game winless run marks a positive start to former Wolves boss Nuno's tenure and another, at home to Manchester United, would certainly endear him to the fans a whole lot more.

But who will get what they want at the City Ground?

  9. 'We had to be patient'published at 17:08 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

FT: Man City 2-0 Sheff Utd

    Manchester City

Manchester City midfielder Rodri speaking to Sky Sports:

"We learned from the last games against Crystal Palace, same feeling of the game controlling but at the end they had chances and we drew. We had to keep focussing and they [Sheff Utd] didn't have the intention to come to us so we had to keep the ball. Important for us this victory."

On goal: "I saw that pass between the lines and it's the only way you can punish these types of teams they are so narrow. I thought Phil [Foden] could set to me and then to be honest I didn't have the intention to shoot but they were dropping so I did it.

"Phil has incredible ability to turn that fast. He has this plasticity with the ball he can turn so quick. We had to be patient but when we can find this pass he is a gamechanger. He increases the pace he can shoot and pass."

On returning from winning Club World Cup: "Always gives you a boost, world champions is a dream come true but it's far away and you have to travel and push yourself. You have to put in effort and be together but it is what it is. We just go through as a team, whoever plays, today we had two or three changes and it's still so good."

I was very impressed with Wolves today. They opened Everton up at will and Everton couldn't match them today.

Three goals were probably kind to Everton.

I put Palmer on my FPL bench but Olise has saved the day. He’s been sensational for Palace and dragged them to a big win. Him and Eze really do make them tick!

Huge amount of luck for Villa there. A very soft penalty. That's their good luck for the season done!
