  1. CLOSE!published at 15:07 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    Wolves 0-0 Everton

A huge chance for Wolves! There's a three-on-one break and it's slipped left to top-scorer Hwang Hee-Chan by Matheus Cunha.

He opts not to shoot first time, instead taking it around goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, but then takes too long and Everton get players back to block the shot.

    What was he doing?!

    Man City 0-0 Sheff Utd

Replays show that that wasn't quite as dramatic as it first seemed, Ederson had it under control.

Bit of a heart-in-mouth moment for the home supporters, though.

    Aston Villa 0-0 Burnley

Moussa Diaby drives forward for Aston Villa before passing to Leon Bailey, whose floated cross is headed away.

    Blimey!

Oliver Norwood swings in a deep cross and it looks like it's looping over but Ederson catches high above his head and stumbles backwards. He somehow manages to keep the ball in front of him just far enough that it doesn't go over the line.

That was dangerous, I was half expecting the referee to check his watch and say that had gone in.

Luton manager Rob Edwards speaking to TNT Sports: "I think we were really brave and we are up against top players and a top team. It was hard for us to get through them in the final third. Their quality is really evident. We got opened up a couple of times, which was disappointing. At 2-0 we changed the shape a little bit. We affected the game. It's amazing how a goal changes the perception of the game. I thought we were playing really well [at 3-0 down]. I am incredibly proud of the players. To almost get something from the game.

"Chongy [Tahith Chong] was great. He was really intense and I thought his quality was good too. He was a little bit more of a link and was driving from defence. We had loads of set-pieces, hit the woodwork a couple of times and had an offside goal. They are a top side and found a way to win.

"I can sleep at night. The result you can't guarantee but you can guarantee that you leave it all out there. Again, standing ovation for the supporters. It was an entertaining game and we are giving them matches to remember.

"We have all been there, at some stage, up against it but the lads found and way to get back into it and they deserve a lot of credit for that. They were hanging on. We can take a lot from that and the performances have been good. Maybe we are changing the narrative around us perhaps a little bit, and people are seeing it a bit more."

It's a good finish, but as far as strong starts go, that is terrible for Crystal Palace.

  10. 'Good feeling to finish 2023 in this way'published at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    FT: Luton Town 2-3 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to BBC Sport: "It is the Premier League. It is the toughest league in the world. Luton are very good. They are building something very good and we need to give credit to Luton. We can see how they perform and never give up. I think we played really well until we conceded. Then they increased in belief.

"In the first half we controlled very well, second half we started to concede crosses and corners. For us at 3-0 the game looks over but in the Premier League it is never over.

"We need to show more capacity to manage this type of situation. When you have something in your hands you don't want to lose it and you go deeper."

On goal scorers Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke: "I am so happy because we are talking about our young squad and players who are showing they have the quality to perform in our team. We were waiting, waiting, waiting to see when he [Palmer] was going to finish the action."

On defender Thiago Silva: "It is amazing, 39 years old and still playing like a 20-year-old. He brings his experience to the team and he is doing really well.

"It has been a big, big week. Next year we start in a positive way and it is a good feeling to finish 2023 in this way."

  12. Postpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023

    Man City 0-0 Sheff Utd

As you might expect, Manchester City have had all of the ball so far.

Sheffield United had just 20% of possession when these two last met in August.

Julian Alvarez flashes a decent low driven effort from the edge of the area wide.

I would take VAR away. It takes too much time and even though they are using the technology, officials are still getting decisions wrong. Keep goal line technology but scrap VAR.

  14. Postpublished at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2023
