    Birmingham 1-3 Leicester

Leicester are are looking to pile on the pain now.

Abdul Fatawu looks keen to show that he can do what Stephy Mavididi can.

He runs into space on the right edge of the area and attempts to bend a shot home, but is off target.

    Marcos Painter
Former Birmingham City defender, on BBC Radio WM

That feels like it will be the final nail in Birmingham's coffin. They haven't started the second half like they did the first. There seems to be a flatness about Blues - there doesn't seem to be the edge like there was in the first half.

As soon as you take your foot off the gas then good teams will unpick you.

    Stephy Mavididi with his second!

Leicester's first-half goals were fast and furious, and this one is well pieced together after winning the ball in the middle of the pitch.

A little backheel from Patson Daka puts the ball at Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's feet, then he shifts it on to Mavididi.

The former Arsenal and Juventus man still had it all to do, but with a bob and a weave he makes space to shoot and it's the deflection on the shot that beats goalkeeper John Ruddy in the end.

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

Leicester's Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is flagged for offside and his hands are on his head in disbelief!

It seems a close call on replays, as Dewsbury-Hall raced away to meet a pass from Wilfred Ndidi.

Ipswich may have failed to go to the top of the Championship after playing out a draw in the East Anglian derby on Saturday, but Tractor Boys winger Wes Burns says they are heading "somewhere good".

"I think the fans can take a lot of positives," Burns told BBC Radio Suffolk.

"I know we didn't get the win everyone so desperately wants but when the dust settles and everyone looks back on it properly, everyone will realise we are seriously going somewhere good."

The big news from the Championship earlier today is that Sunderland have appointed former Rangers boss Michael Beale as their new head coach.

Beale had a brief spell in the Championship with QPR last season before leaving in November 2022 to join the Scottish Premiership giants.

He won 31 of his 43 games in charge of Rangers but was sacked on 1 October after three defeats in their first seven league matches of the campaign.

You can read more about that appointment by clicking here.

You can read a game all wrong can't you!

At the start of the evening, I did wonder whether this might be a bit of a stalemate, that Blues would try to grind out a result - and that the biggest talking point would be that home boss Wayne Rooney had had a pre-match shave.

For the first time since arriving at St Andrew's in October.

Instead, it has been an at times dazzling display of fast, attacking football.

End-to-end stuff, in which Blues have played their part but still look at times incapable, as many a team would be, of countering attacks of such breathtaking precision and speed.

The Foxes are clearly on their way back. Only their own arrogance and smugness maybe can trip them up!

Clive: If Birmingham are playing 4-4-2 l think Rooney had the tactics board upside down.

Anon: Granted Eustace had a good start, but the wheels had started to come off. Also in-play the Blues were often only 25-30% possession. At least now they're having more play. Rooney did not do that badly at Derby, all things considered and with a transfer window coming up, I'll reserve judgement.

  11. 'Keep doing what you're doing'published at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

    HT: Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

    Steve Howard
Former Leicester striker on BBC Radio Leicester

I think Enzo Maresca will be saying just keep doing what you're doing in the second half.

Leicester have dominated the game, there was a 10-minute spell when Birmingham had a lot of possesion and scored, but Leicester have been really strong through the middle and counter-attacking to perfection, as we've seen with the goals.

When Birmingham go long it's just playing into Leicester's hands.

  12. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

It's been an enthralling half at St Andrew's so far.

Two goals on the counter attack from Stephy Mavididi and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall have the league leaders narrowly in front.

But Wayne Rooney's Birmingham City have looked good against the competition pacesetters.

  13. Postpublished at 45+2 mins

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

Leicester are stacking up the chances, but failing to knock them down.

Again it's some nice link up work between Patson Daka and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall at the top of the Birmingham penalty box, but they get it a bit muddled and Birmingham clear.

  14. Postpublished at 45+1 mins

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

There will be three minutes of added time to come at St Andrew's

In the context of this game, that is time for all sorts to still happen.

  15. Postpublished at 44 mins

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

Again Stephy Mavididi tries to dance his way into the Birmingham box from the left.

He squeezes between two defenders and goes looking for a foul. He hits the ground and is probably lucky not to be shown a yellow there for simulation.

  16. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

Leicester forward Stephy Mavididi has already scored a few wonderful goals this season, and he certainly must have felt he was capable of another one here.

He receives the ball just outside the box then runs at Emanuel Aiwu. After a few crossovers and a bit of flash, Mavididi tries to curl the ball home.

The shot, however, never had enough bend on it and it goes a good distance off target.

  18. CLOSE!published at 40 mins

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

Leicester will wonder how they don't have a third!

A deep cross from Abdul Fatawu forces Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wide, but he does well to create room for himself to pick out Patson Daka with a low ball.

Daka gets plenty on his effort, but the Zambia striker flashes his shot past the near post.

Jordan James showing he can get the business done in defence for Birmingham as well.

He tangles with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and uses his body perfectly to shield the ball and win a free kick in Birmingham's own penalty area.

  20. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Birmingham 1-2 Leicester

Birmingham's Siriki Dembele is eye wide as a through ball is played up to him on the right.

The summer arrival from Bournemouth, however, times his run terribly and is a long way offside.

James Justin had the situation all under control there for Leicester as he stepped up.
