Thoroughly deserved, you'd have to say, as Carla Ward's side lift from the foot of the table.

Ebony Salmon has been brilliant since she came on against her former side. The England international is only 22 and could really kick on.

Four more minutes to be added on at Ashton Gate. A late goal for the hosts would make life interesting again...

    Ebony Salmon (86 mins)

Super sub! That should do it for Villa, a first win of the WSL season is incoming!

Ebony Salmon made the opener and this is opportune stuff, her cross in is hooked out and she readjusts to meet it on the full, steering in a left-footed volley that beats Olivia Clark at her near post.

    Bristol City 0-1 Aston Villa

Understandably a few nerves starting to show from Villa, who have gone so long without a win. Bristol City have a couple of free-kicks out wide but Villa defend pretty well, with Rachel Daly back battling for the loose ball in the right-back spot.

    Bristol City 0-1 Aston Villa

It's looking like a 16th home defeat in their last 19 in the WSL for City. We are into the last 10 minutes as Lucy Staniforth comes on for Villa.

Megan Connolly is unfortunate, she had to cut that ball out or Rachel Daly would surely have netted. But Villa deserve that lead. Are they on track for a first win of the season in the WSL?

    Megan Connolly (OG 77 mins)

    Breakthrough!

Villa finally lead, a lovely sweeping pass out wide is turned on first time to sub Ebony Salmon, she rolls the defender and puts the ball in towards Rachel Daly.

It takes a touch - possibly off a defender - and glides in at the near post. Yes, it's gone down as a Megan Connolly own goal...

    Bristol City 0-0 Aston Villa

Jordan Nobbs has been involved in seven goals in her last five WSL appearances against Bristol City (3 goals, 4 assists) and, overall, has five goals and six assists against the Robins in the competition. The England midfielder has looked sharp since coming on.

Sarah Mayling lines up a free-kick from an absolute mile out, her connection is true and Olivia Clark has to move sharply to her right and push it out. Top strike!

Still Villa knock in the door but still there's no answer.

Into the final quarter of the game. Are we going to see a goal? A draw would at least get a first WSL point of the season on the board for Villa.

    Bristol City 0-0 Aston Villa

Why not? Worth a dig from long range but Danielle Turner's speculator for Villa is always flying wide.

The visitors have bossed the game with 68% of the play but for all that have mustered just four shots on target.

  17. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 15:31 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2023

    Bristol City 0-0 Aston Villa

The home side haven't had a shot on goal since the 26th minute and have barely had a kick at all since the resumption. They have brought Emily Syme off the bench now though, perhaps she can spark them into life. Mari Ward is also on, while Villa send on Jordan Nobbs and Ebony Salmon.

More good football down the Villa right, this time they shift it inside to Kenza Dali in the D, she bends in a shot but it's too close to Olivia Clark and she makes a comfortable save.

Half an hour left at Ashton Gate.

  19. Postpublished at 15:26 Greenwich Mean Time 12 November 2023

    Bristol City 0-0 Aston Villa

It's all Villa, a relentless surge from the team in white. Rachel Daly pops up on the right this time to beat a defender and cut the ball back but City just about hack it out.
