How on earth are Blackburn not 1-0 up?!

Tyrhys Dolan plays a neat ball from the byeline towards the centre of the box and picks out Arnor Sigurdsson.

Sigurdsson meets the ball in mid air and volleys from point blank range but his effort cannons off the crossbar with the goal in front of him.

Preston break into the Blackburn half and the ball is worked laterally to the onrushing Duane Holmes.

He opts to shoot from distance but his dipping effort is collected by Rovers keeper Leopold Wahlstedt.

Arnor Sigurdsson tees up Adam Wharton on the edge of the Preston box.

The Blackburn man decides to go for goal and launches an effort which eventually sails high and wide of the mark.

A quarter of an hour gone and the game has calmed down somewhat after a pretty frantic start.

My only real tactical take so far is that we all think it's admirable that Preston North End are playing two strikers.

But numerically Blackburn have an advantage in midfield.

There's always that player available and often it is Adam Wharton in the centre-circle.

It's all Blackburn at the minute and they've passed the ball around well.

Tyrhys Dolan pings a speculative ball upfield which bounces out for a Preston goal-kick.

Some sarcastic jeers go up from the visiting supporters.

Brad Potts puts a push in on Blackburn's Andrew Moran on the touchline.

There's a bit of a slope down towards the advertising hoardings, which Moran soon crashes into.

There's a bit of needle in this derby in these early stages.

Jordan Storey has just spared Preston's blushes.

His sliding block thwarts Sammie Szmodics from giving Blackburn the lead from Arnor Sigurdsson's sumptuous pass, just moments after Duane Holmes' effort at the other end.

What a frantic start for both sides.

What a move from Preston. What a pass down the left.

It surprised Blackburn. It is a little lesson that you can't be complacent.

Preston should be 1-0 up and against the run of play as well.

Blackburn start brightly but North End break on the counter and the ball is worked to Duane Holmes, who's unmarked in the centre of the box.

But his tame shot is blocked away for a corner, which Liam Lindsay heads high over the crossbar.

Tyrhys Dolan will start as the focal point, then he will drop back as Szmodics advances past him.

At some stage, you will see Arnor Sigurdsson, who is on the left, on the right.

That is the way that Jon Dahl Tomasson has got this team playing.

But every now and again, Friday night football is exciting.

There is just something special in the air tonight. There is very little between the two teams.

  18. Analysis - 'A difficult derby to call'published at 19:49 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2023

    Blackburn v Preston (20:00 GMT)

    Andy Bayes
    BBC Radio Lancashire

This is a meeting of two teams who will feel they've a chance of reaching the top six this season, but in recent times haven't managed that feat.

Blackburn haven't made the play-offs since being relegated from the Premier League in 2012. Alan Irvine was the Preston North End boss the last time they made it to the play-offs, in 2009.

Not a lot was expected of Rovers this season, following high-profile player departures and a chunk of the budget being removed over the summer. The reality is that they are pretty much where they were this time last year. They don't tend to draw matches, it's normally one or the other for them.

North End, likewise, can be a little difficult to predict. Six straight wins was a dream start to the season following an opening-day draw, but that was followed by a seven-match winless run.

You'd be right not to call these sides arch-rivals. Ask Rovers fans and it's Burnley that they sing about. Similarly, North End consider Blackpool as their nearest and not so dearest. But, don't be fooled into thinking that it means nothing to the supporters either. Both sides have had 4-1 away wins in this fixture in the past 19 months, so bragging rights are important.

It's a difficult one to call.

Preston boss Ryan Lowe oversaw a stunning 4-1 defeat of Blackburn at Ewood Park last season.

Almost one year on, does he see Blackburn as a more formidable side?

"They're [Blackburn] a good team, everyone knows that, they're very intricate in the way they play," Lowe told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"Whether there's a rivalry or not, they've got a fantastic manager and it's a game that we feel will be important for both sets of clubs and fans.

"We'll treat them the same as we treat any other team - with respect but without any fear."

  20. 'We should be proud of our players'published at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 November 2023

    Blackburn v Preston (20:00 GMT)

It's fair to say that Jon Dahl Tomasson has done well to steer Blackburn up the Championship table in recent matches.

Their win against Norwich on Sunday lifted them five places from 15th to 10th and they are now only three points outside the play-offs, having been embroiled in a battle at the bottom not so long ago.

And all this while Tomasson's squad is in the midst of an injury crisis. But can they go on and consign their neighbours to defeat this evening?

"I think we should be proud of our players with how they're performing at the moment. They have a lot of confidence and should do going into this derby," Tomasson told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"There will be a lot of fans, it's going to be a great atmosphere so it's a great moment to put in a good performance before the international break as well."
