Terry Venables: 'The best English coach we've had' says Gary Lineker

They don't make them like Terry Venables any more.

One of English football's most iconic figures, first as a player then manager, died at the age of 80 on Sunday.

Skilful, stylish - on and off the pitch, a classy charmer with a killer grin, Venables enjoyed a trophy-laden career with Chelsea, Tottenham, QPR and Crystal Palace.

On retirement, he showed the tactical nous which went with his cheeky character, both home and abroad.

He brought the best out of Crystal Palace and QPR, then ended Barcelona's long wait for a championship and came within a penalty shoot-out of a first European Cup.

On his return, he delivered silverware at Spurs, and then gave England fans belief and a summer to remember as coach at Euro '96, with famous wins over Netherlands and Spain before a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out loss to Germany.

Further coaching spells at Middlesbrough, Leeds and Australia followed too, before he stepped away from the game.

Clubs across the Championship, as they did last night, will pay tribute to 'El Tel' before the games.

  4. Moore desperate for Terriers to turnpublished at 19:40 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

    Sunderland v Huddersfield (19:45 GMT)

Huddersfield fans who've left boots in the back of their car might well have been close to a call-up in recent weeks, given the injury situation that boss Darren Moore is working with.

It goes some way to explaining the five-game winless run they're on, which has including a 4-1 gubbing by rivals Leeds and another thrashing at Cardiff.

Back-to-back home draws, including one against high-fliers Southampton on Saturday, have shown some signs of improvement.

"I understand the frustrations, because we're in an industry where the number one thing is to win games," Moore told BBC Radio Leeds.

Sunderland were beaten at Plymouth on Saturday, as Tony Mowbray's young side saw an upturn ended by defeat.

Dealing with disappointment is all part of the progression.

"We're a young vibrant bunch of footballers in a really tough league, we're aware we're going to have setbacks, but we have to improve," assistant Mark Venus told BBC Radio Newcastle.

  5. Saints looking to extend unbeaten runpublished at 19:35 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

Southampton v Bristol City (19:45 GMT)

Southampton are finally hitting their stride after a pretty inconsistent start to life back in the Championship this season.

Russell Martin's side welcome Bristol City tonight off the back of a nine-game unbeaten Championship run.

The Saints are also looking to win three on the bounce in the league at St Mary's for the first time since November 2020 - quite a stretch.

Bristol City arrive having failed to score in their nine of their past 16 league away games, on the other hand.

However, the Robins have won their past four league games against Southampton.

  6. Top v bottom at Hillsboroughpublished at 19:31 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

It's bottom of the table hosting top of the table at Hillsborough this evening.

Sheffield Wednesday have had a rotten run of form so far in 2023-24 and nothing says that any clearer than their goalscoring drought on home soil.

The Owls have scored just four goals in eight Championship games at home so far this season.

They last scored four or fewer goals at home at this stage of the season in 2020-21, during which they were relegated to League One.

Leicester on the other hand have steamrollered their way through the season and have won seven out of eight games on their travels in the league this season.

Will that run be extended this evening or will Wednesday end a three-game losing run to stun the league leaders?

  7. Farke writing new history as Leeds move forwardpublished at 19:27 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

    Leeds v Swansea (19:45 GMT)

Leeds fans will never forget Marcelo Bielsa for his achievements at Elland Road but after a couple of torrid seasons the reminiscing might just be taking a back seat for a bit, as Daniel Farke's influence spreads.

United are on a run of five straight home wins, something not achieved since the charismatic Argentine's bucket was stationed in the technical area.

"One of my key topics was to make a fortress of Elland Road," Farke told BBC Radio Leeds.

"It should be like our living room, if someone wants to conquer it, you do everything to not allow it, to protect it.

"We have to make sure the next result and the next performance is good. Our amazing fans who also support us, the atmosphere at Elland Road is second to none."

Swansea are already wary that they might face the wrath of a Leeds side that were denied by struggling Rotherham last time out when they hit the turf in West Yorkshire.

"You know the sort of challenge you are going to face," boss Michael Duff told the club website. "There will be 35,000 there, they are right up there and they will be looking to bounce straight back after their draw the other night."

  8. Can Rooney make it two wins in two?published at 19:23 Greenwich Mean Time 29 November 2023

    Blackburn v Birmingham (19:45 GMT)

Birmingham City go into their trip to Ewood Park off the back of a morale-boosting win against struggling Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

It was a victory that Blues had to dig deep for. Having conceded on the stroke of half-time when George Byers put the Owls ahead, Juninho Bacuna levelled just moments later.

Jordan James, who came on as a substitute, scored the winner which gave Wayne Rooney his first victory as Birmingham boss at the sixth attempt.

Blackburn themselves put their pre-international break Lancashire derby defeat by Preston behind them to beat Stoke 3-0 coming into tonight's fixture.

With both sides hovering around mid-table, which team can enter December with their eyes looking up the table rather than down?
