    York 0-0 Wigan

Wing-back Thierry Latty-Fairweather is a persistent menace for York, bit like a wasp that won't leave a dropped ice cream alone.

However, Wigan are just starting to get to grips with him as he skips down the left with regularity. Sean Clare the latest to get hold of him and win back the ball.

Not since a Graham Steadman-inspired York gave star-studded rugby league kings Wigan a tough test in the 1984 Challenge Cup semi-final at Elland Road, has a team from the city given the pie-eaters such a fierce match-up on telly.

It was a quagmire of a pitch that day, no such issues today. Just fog. Just fog.

    Iain Dunn
Former York winger Iain Dunn on BBC Radio York

York City are trying to go the right things, while staying tight and compact.

They are going about this match in the correct manner.

It feels like a TV game.

  4. goal

GOAL: Notts C 1-2 Shrewsburypublished at 49 mins

    Ryan Bowman

Ryan Bowman does it again, striking early in the half to put Shrewsbury back in front.

Again Notts get themselves in a pickle failing to deal with the ball forward and It's Bowman who's the man on the spot.

  5. Commentator Mowbray seen dancing at Yorkpublished at 20:54 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan

    Robin Grey
    BBC Radio Manchester commentator

We are in the freezing cold. It is -3C.

But, we have just seen BBC Match of the Day commentator Guy Mowbray pitchside.

He is a York City fan. He has been given the night off and has been dancing with the mascot a few moments ago.

I am not sure that Wigan boss Shaun Maloney will be dancing.

    York 0-0 Wigan

Blame the cold perhaps, but it's still a bit tentative from Wigan.

You might have imagined they'd have come flying out of the blocks.

Martial Godo does power diagonally across field for the 'Tics, feeding Jordan Jones, but he can't wrap his foot sufficiently around it and it sails behind for a goal kick.

  7. SECOND HALFpublished at 20:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan; Notts C 1-1 Shrewsbury

Off we go... 45 minutes of fun to be had. In the fog at York at least.

Interested to hear Matthew Uggla talking about York having a top level sports team on BBC Two.

They do, York Valkyrie are Women's Super League champions in rugby league.

It would be nice if York City Football Club could emulate their fellow tenants.

  9. Wigan boss Maloney 'needs to have stern word'published at 20:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    HT: York 0-0 Wigan

    Steve Eyre
Former Manchester City coach on BBC Radio Manchester

I'm not expecting big shouting or tea cups or slamming doors.

But I think Wigan manager Shaun Maloney needs to have a stern word that that is not the correct way to start a football match, which actually lasted for 31 minutes.

I think he will pat a few backs - they were unlucky not to score.

But he would expect so much more from everybody in the second half.

  10. York's first half was 'perfect'published at 20:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    HT: York 0-0 Wigan

    Leon Osman
Former Everton midfielder on BBC Two

I thought York executed the first half perfectly.

They broke forward and created a couple of half-chances.

It took Wigan an awful lot of time to really get going and figure out how to break through this setup that York have offered.

Jay: Would be nice if we could actually see what's going on!

The fog has certainly got worse again in York - if it continues the referee might have a decision to make, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

After a horror start Notts County got themselves level before the break to leave this tie with Shrewsbury all square.

Ryan Bowman was the profitee after a slip by Aden Baldwin early doors, but Richard Brindley found a leveller with a spectacular drive.

  14. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:32 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan

Great first-half from York of the National League who have frustrated their Wigan opponents who sit 53 places above them in the table.

They had some early joy, Scott Burgess looking lively and Thierry Latty-Fairweather has been a pest down the left.

Wigan had chances too through Stephen Humprhys in particular, but York stood firm.

Some concern about the fog as the players head for the dressing rooms. Will Thomas Kirk make a big call?

  15. York players 'adamant' over handball claimpublished at 20:29 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Two

A few of the York City players are absolutely adamant.

I think it is Wigan's Baba Adeeko. The ball comes off his hand accidentally.

We don't have VAR tonight. Would that have been looked at with VAR? With this handball rule, who knows?

You have to give the referee credit, he was looking straight at the incident.

  16. Postpublished at 42 mins

    York 0-0 Wigan

Kamikaze defending by York centre-half Tyler Cordner, who thought for a minute he was some kind of hybrid of Ronaldinho, Bobby Moore and Xavi and tried to play his way out of danger.

Martial Godo nicked it off him in the box, but in came Alex Woodyard, sliding in like the Ghostbusters lads or whatever, to mop up and save the day.

It looks pretty spectral out there, with the fog hanging low like a spirit.

  17. 'York boss will be absolutely delighted'published at 20:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

York City manager Neal Ardley will be absolutely delighted with the way that his team have played, but Shaun Maloney won't be disappointed.

The requirement for Wigan tonight is attitude and application.

They have got the quality, they have got the players to do it.

  18. goal

GOAL: Notts C 1-1 Shrewsburypublished at 38 mins

    Richard Brindley

What a way to get yourselves level, as Notts County's Richard Brindley hits one from distance and finds the back of the net.

Rasper to get the old Kop up and running.

  19. Postpublished at 37 mins

    York 0-0 Wigan

Thierry Latty-Fairweather makes something out of nothing as he closes Wigan down by their byeline, but the bobbling ball goes behind as York can't make anything of it.

Meanwhile, someone is on a solo mission in the stands roaring about their dlslike of Wigan, and urging others to stand up to join in with it. I don't hear many joining him.

  20. Wigan 'exploited' York high line for two chancespublished at 20:21 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan

    Steve Eyre
Former Manchester City coach on BBC Radio Manchester

The high line of York City needs to be exploited with a through ball and a run from midfield.

It was Charlie Hughes who chipped it over the York defence twice.

It is creating opportunities for the team.
