Bright start by York, who win a corner and look to put pressure on but, but Wigan eventually recover possession and break themselves.

Shrewsbury strike within a minute of the start, as Ryan Bowman capitalised on an Aden Baldwin slip to pounce.

Macaulay Langstaff's goals have been a focal point for Notts County both in promotion last season and registering themselves in League Two this year.

He has also turned his hand to the FA Cup, netting the decider in a five-goal shootout at Meadow Lane in round one.

Shrewsbury also engaged in a high-scoring five-goaller en route to round two, which bodes well for tonight, as they saw off League Two side Colchester.

Connor Hall's unfortunate deflection ended up costing Colchester, as the Shrews clung on to book their second-round place.

The form guides couldn't be more starkly contrasting as fourth-tier Notts County park their League Two promotion bid for an FA Cup home date with Shrewsbury Town.

It's been a whirlwind start for the Magpies, who under Luke Williams have won their last three home games and scored three or more goals in each of them.

Their opponents Shrewsbury have been to the third round in each of the past six seasons and famously count the likes of Everton, Cardiff and Stoke among their scalps.

However, away from their home patch the Salop have not won in the past nine, making them the footballing equivalent of a kid who wolfed down their ice cream too quickly at the zoo and are ready to explode as they chug down the M54.

York's progress in the FA Cup came by way of a replay, beating Chester 2-1 at the LNER Stadium after a goalless draw at the Deva.

Wigan got the job done first time round, helpfully so given the number of fixtures and the extent of the trip to the south west.

Exeter were beaten 2-0, and the League One side edged closer to a date with the big boys... York permitting of course.

Wigan Athletic find themselves in League One these days but it's little more than 10 years since the men in blue and white carried the famous FA Cup trophy around Wembley after a modern-day cup shock.

Manchester City, containing Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez, were stunned by Ben Watson's stoppage-time header from Shaun Maloney's corner, to hand the Latics the cup.

Maloney is now the boss at Wigan, and has put plenty of store by the FA Cup as a manager this season.

"With the mindset and the objective of staying in this league I really wanted a cup run in the FA and EFL Cups," Maloney told BBC Radio Manchester.

"We've taken both cup competitions really seriously, haven't played a whole lot of kids in any of the games.

"We'll be a strong as we can. We've got a history, and hopefully it's our turn to make a few memories this year."

York City have endured a tough time in recent seasons - after the highs of the Gary Mills era with Wembley and promotion, their decline was sudden and dramatic.

Countless managers, off-field issues with ownership and back-to-back relegations left the Minstermen miles away from their past glories.

Finally there is light on the horizon, the club are back in the National League and now they're keen to evoke some of their cup fortunes of the past - 90 minutes from the third round.

"All of a sudden it’s like – one more and we’re in with the big boys," boss Neal Ardley told BBC Radio York.

“It’s a big game, but it’s also a nice feeling away from the pressures of the league, nice to be underdogs - because we’ve been expected to win the games before - and hopefully it’ll be a really good occasion.”

It might not be quite so traditional as the Saturday 15:00 GMT kick-offs, but tonight's FA Cup second-round ties get the extra spice of taking place under the lights.

The buzz that comes with the walk to the stadium, wrapping up against the considerable chill and imbibing warmth from something hot, all just adds to the mix.

Packed crowds, unique atmospheres. The lure of the cup.

York City are hoping their moment back in the spotlight is just the start of it after some fallow years, and they take on 2013 winners Wigan Athletic on home turf.

Notts County returned to their status as the oldest Football League club when they won promotion back to the 92 last season, and they and opponents Shrewsbury will also be hoping to relive past cup achievements in this year's competition.

Round two starts here; ding, ding...
