What a chance for Stephen Humphrys again!

Wigan go route one, Humprhys manages to bulldoze his way past the defender and then past goalkeeper Stockdale.

However, the bobbling ball won't sit kindly for a shot, so he tries to backheel and air-kicks nowt.

Then another chance emerges, Wigan cutting loose, Charlie Hughes releasing Callum Lang with a magical pass through the needle.

Lang rounds Stockdale, but the veteran recovers and as he tries to cut back the Wigan man, York's goalkeeper - who doubles up as head of recruitment - gets back to smother.

They're living diceily now. If that's a word.

Neal Ardley will be buzzing with this. His York side have held their own now for 30 minutes, and not been disgraced despite a few hairy moments....

    Oh... here we go!

York are working really hard in their shape.

You can see the red shirts all back in unison.

They are saying to Wigan: "Go on, try and break us down".

Thierry Latty-Fairweather is the one who springs out of that defensive position.

  4. GREAT SAVE!published at 30 mins

    York 0-0 Wigan

Brilliant chance for Wigan, and Stephen Humphrys, but the finish lacks the superb build-up.

Humphrys turns beautifully with a silky drag-back and accelerates away from his marker before driving toward the box.

Defenders opt for the runners and it opened up for him, but his shot lacked the required sizzle to beat David Stockdale, who got down well to save.

Tomo: Watching York v Wigan and remembering what football was like before VAR took over everything and ruined it.

Alan: City fan following from the beach in Antigua. No fog here, just sunshine and cricket. Sadly no BBC 2 either. Come on City.

David Stockdale makes another save for York, standing out of the fog like a pink beacon.

York build down the left, neat exchanges of passes sees the ball roll tantalisingly across the Wigan box but it breaks for turquoise rather than red and the ball is cleared.

Alex Woodyard is a real insurance policy for York in the middle of the park.

Just as it looked like Callum Lang was going to get chance to stretch his legs for Wigan, the ex-Wimbledon man shuttles across and drives him away before pinching the ball.

Perfect enforcer play. Like a bouncer down the Shambles.

  8. 'Only Wigan centre-halves can get the ball'published at 20:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan

    Steve Eyre
Former Manchester City coach on BBC Radio Manchester

Wigan striker Stephen Humphrys has gone to centre-half to get a touch of the ball!

He took a first pass on the left wing and then dribbled it to centre-half, to play with the centre-halves, because that is where the ball is at the moment.

Just a quick reminder that Wigan are a real threat, as a swift break ends up with Martial Godo in the box, but his shot through the legs is saved by David Stockdale.

Straight at him, in fairness. But a warning shot.

Lovely play from York, pushing Ryan Fallowfield right on from the right wing-back spot, and his low cross is deflected behind by the Wigan defence.

The corner is cleared but York come again, Scott Burgess looking to drive into the box for the home side but Charlie Hughes steps across calmly to break it up.

More reason for the home supporters to find their voice.

David Stockdale got the nod tonight for York, in goal.

I remember him - now 38 - coming through at Darlington and getting a move to the Premier League.

His experience at Fulham, Brighton, Birmingham and others might just be a steadying influence for the Minstermen.

Mercifully the fog is lifting a bit from pitchside, which might just help this game get into a proper rhythm.

York don't look cowed by any means, but Wigan are slightly pensive at the moment.

That said, it's a wall of red shirts in front of them and they might have to be patient.

  13. York 'very defensive' in setuppublished at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    York 0-0 Wigan

    Paul Robinson
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Two

They have set up very defensively tonight, York.

You look at the players that they have got on the pitch - they have got three or four potential centre-halves - and two full-backs.

He's looking to protect his goalkeeper tonight, is Neal Ardley.

Desperate late block by Wigan denies a marauding Thierry Latty-Fairweather, following superb hold-up play by Lennell John-Lewis.

Perfectly weighted into the winger's path by the forward, and his slaloming run had the Latics backpedalling before recovery was made.

I'm not sure how much they can blame the fog given they're wearing the equivalent of a peacock's plume with their turquoise kit, but Wigan's detail in possession has been a bit off.

    Sloppy.

York trying to force the issue, under Neal Ardley it's certainly not a wham-bam approach. Very attractive style from both teams.

Sometimes, it has been patchy, the fog.

At times, I thought there was no way this game was going ahead.

But, we have managed to get it going and what a great atmosphere we have got.

Scott Burgess tiptoes his way into the box for York, but can't get a clean sight of goal and his stood-up cross to the back post sails behind.

Really good atmosphere amid the finger-frosting cold. York fans have waited for an occasion like this for years.

Wigan get a free-kick as Martial Godo makes himself a menace down the right and is hauled down.

The Latics try a cute free-kick routine but it's a scruffy one and York get numbers in to bang it away.

  20. Two teams 'in great form'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

We have got two teams who are domestically in a great run of form.

You can see how Shaun Maloney has approached this game, simply by the team he has put out.

    He doesn't want an upset.
