I would have loved to see what Sarina Wiegman said to the players at half time because they came out with a completely different energy in the second half.

It was like a whole new team, the energy, the effort, the quality was second to none.

They will be kicking themselves now and thinking 'why couldn't we do that for 90 minutes?'

The subs played their part, Mead bringing new impetus, Toone scoring. They were by far the second team in the second half and could have easily gotten a fourth goal.

  3. 'Anything is possible with this team'published at 22:41 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    England

England forward Beth Mead speaking to Radio 5 Live: "Another surreal moment at Wembley. It is always a priviledge and honour to play here and represent England.

"I'm happy I got to come on and make a difference, but it still feels a little flat because we lacked that extra goal unfortunately.

On the second half: "The result is a testament to who we are as a team. We didn't play badly in the first half, we were the better team but they went forward and scored two goals and we didn't. We had a lot of chances and weren't ruthless.

"That is England that you saw in the second half. Full of energy, ruthless, scoring three goals past an amazing Netherlands side. Still disappointed even though the dream remains alive. We kind of let ourselves down with not being secure at the back today.

On Scotland and needing a big scoreline: "We can take a lot of confidence from the second half. If we are ruthless for the full 90 minutes of a game then anything is possible with this team. We've got a lot of goalscorers on the pitch from all throughout the side, so we will give our best to do that next week."

Beth Mead has just spoken to BBC Radio 5 Live. She called this match "surreal".

Couldn't have summed it up better myself. Full quotes from her to come.

  5. 'England just need to focus on performances'published at 22:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

All England need to do now is focus on the performances.

There is no doubt in my mind that if every game was like that second half, this squad can get to more European Championship finals, more World Cup finals, and if they qualify, an Olympic final.

Ultimately they need to focus on what it takes to make a good performance and hopefully a result against Scotland.

I was really angry and disappointed with the performance and Sarina Wiegman in the first half but the substitutions changed the game.

The second half was a completely different team and it was exactly what we needed.

I am a little bit surprised by England. They showed adaptability in the World Cup but we haven’t really seen that in this Nations League. It took for us to be practically eliminated for it to show. I am surprised we haven’t seen that adaptability from Sarina Wiegman throughout this qualifying campaign.

  8. 'The fans make it hard for opponents to play here'published at 22:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: England 3-2 Netherlands

    England

England midfielder Georgia Stanway speaking to Radio 5 Live: "Wembley delivered again for us tonight. The atmosphere was incredible. We heard the fans, every transition, every attack, every block, they were loud and behind us.

"That is what it is like to be England, it is difficult to come and play here because of the fans. We need to continue that in Scotland, get as many fans there as possible and keep them behind us.

"The job is not done yet, see you all again on Tuesday."

Excellent second half performance from the Lionesses, such great spirit and determination to get back into the game. Player of the match for me was Lauren Hemp.

  10. 'We've kept the dream alive and need to continue the momentum'published at 22:30 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: England 3-2 Netherlands

    England

England midfielder Georgia Stanway speaking to Radio 5 Live: "It's a weird feeling. The first half was by far away from our standards. We played well but conceded two goals that should not have ended up in the back of our net.

"In the second half we turned it around. Right until the last minute we thought we were going to get there [winning by two goals]. We've kept the dream alive, would have liked another goal, but it is still all to play for come Scotland.

On the character shown in the second half: "We have another gear and the second half proved it. In difficult circumstances we have that extra something to get results over the line. It didn't matter who got the goals or how they happened, just that it got over the line.

"We stopped the transition and the counter in the second half and trapped them in their own half, which created more chances for us.

On the Scotland game: "It is still all to play for, we are massively excited to face Scotland, and we have to go and take over. We need to prove why we are here, everything we have achieved so far and take the momentum into the next game."

  11. 'Scotland will know that England are vulnerable at the back'published at 22:28 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: England 3-2 Netherlands

    Jen Beattie
Former Scotland defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It sounds so cliche but Scotland will just be focussing on themselves.

They have had a couple of tricky performances of late, yes they got a draw against Belgium tonight, but they would have liked to win that game.

On the balance of this game they know that England will potentially be vulnerable at the back, they can take the game to them. Scotland did so well up in Sunderland in the reverse game between the teams, and will have learned from it.

They have big injuries, but you look at the rest of the squad, Claire Emslie, Erin Cuthbert, they deserve to be at major tournaments and they have the players to deliver that. They need to find consistency.

England goalkeeper and captain Mary Earps: "I thought the girls were unbelievable. To comeback like that. I thought they were unbelievable. Subs came on and impacted the game.

"I'm sorry my performance cost the girls like that."

What went through your head when the Netherlands' second goal went in? "Words I definitely can't say on TV. That will haunt me for a long time. I've really let the team down today. I'm really gutted.

"It could have been a really special night at Wembley. The team were unbelievable. The way they moved the ball around. The tenacity. The girls were phenomenal."

Good question Dan. England would have to beat Scotland by at least three more goals than however many the Netherlands beat Belgium by.

Can England qualify at all on goal difference if Netherlands win? Like a 7-0 win would take us above them? Everywhere is saying if the Dutch win we are straight out regardless??

  18. 'We can't control what others do'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: England 3-2 Netherlands

    England

More from England boss Sarina Wiegman speaking to ITV: "I don't think we played poor in the first half but we had to score a goal and we thought at half-time that we had to change something so we brought Beth Mead on and then made a few more changes because we felt we needed better connections and more energy.

"I am impressed with my team, and also Ella - she scores a lot of important goals and she just shows up. She is always ready whether she starts or comes on, that is good.

"We need to win in Scotland, and now we really need to win. We are dependent on the other game but if we want to progress we need a really good win by four goals I would say. We can control is playing well and winning that game. That is what we need to do first. We can't control what the others do."

  19. 'I feel a little bit strange'published at 22:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    FT: England 3-2 Netherlands

    England

England boss Sarina Wiegman speaking to ITV: "I feel a little bit strange. I am really happy with the win but in the end you hope you win by two goals so you're in a better position. But, coming back from 2-0 down and how we showed up in the second half was so well done. It was a good performance. Overall it was a really good game.

"We started well and were totally dominant but they came with one counter attack and went 1-0 up. It was a good goal from there.

"We said at half-time that we weren't playing badly, but yes we'd conceded two goals and we had to do ebtter but keep going because they are struggling too."
