    Euro 2024 draw and trophy

Time for us to leave it there.

Here's our developing draw story as Scotland will play hosts Germany in the opening game of the tournament and England face a repeat of the their 2020 semi-final against Denmark.

Wales, if they get through the play-offs, will face France, Netherlands and Austria.

Excited? We are too. A reminder that you'll be able to watch the tournament across the BBC and ITV. Schedules should be released in the next few weeks.

We'll see you in March for the play-offs, and then back here on 14 June for Germany v Scotland.

SMS Message: Technically, we should find these games relatively easy and will be able to rotate the squad. My only worry is the physicality of our younger players against the eastern european sides who will use their size and height to their advantage from Tom, England
    Tom, England
SMS Message: Honestly a pretty average group for England. Denmark and Serbia can both be good on the day but Slovenia should be a walk in the park. Euros groups are never easy though so England do have to be careful. If they turned up like they did in the last two games I could see them crashing out but if Southgate can get his tactics right I think they should win the group. from Kaden, England fan

  3. 'We know the expectation at home'

    England

England manger Gareth Southgate: "You can look at it on paper but the games aren't played on paper. There are some teams that you are glad to avoid in Pot 3 and Pot 4 but all of the teams that we play are more than capable."

Happy to avoid Scotland and Wales? "They are brilliant occasions for the fans and great games to play in so I was really relaxed about it. Being in a few tournaments gives you advantages because you know the next objective is to get out of the group and then you go from there really."

On Serbia and Slovenia: "You look at Serbia with a centre forward like Aleksander Mitrovic and then you have to be careful not to assume anything when you see these draws, that's for certain.

"Slovenia was one of the first games I had as England manager and I will always remember Joe Hart made a save that day that if he didn't make, I might not be still England manager so you do think back to those moments."

On the next steps now, and whether he is happy with less than 300 miles travel: "We're now able to work out our bases, opposition [for warm-up games], where we stay so it just gives us a bit more clarity now the draw is done.

"We're hugely excited to be part of the tournament, we know the expectation at home, we've developed a lot as a team in the last few years, we're getting used to these big games so we're ready for that expectation. We hope we can give our supporters some more brilliant nights as I think we have in the last few tournaments."

  6. 'One of the toughest groups'

    Wales

Wales manager Robert Page: "It looks like one of the toughest group there. We've got a lot of work to do to get there but the rewards are there. We're all in football because we want to play against the best teams, players and managers and they certainly fall into that category.

"The boys have shown against top opposition that we are more than capable of holding our own and if we get through, brilliant, that means we've had two great performances and then we can take that momentum into the Euros.

"We've played Holland, France and Austria before so we know what to expect. We want to play against world class teams.

"Planning for play-offs in March is going well. We've had to forecast that we will qualify and already get some base camps in line. No doubt in January we will be doing some site visits."

  7. Post update

Wales, at 29th in the Fifa world rankings, would be the lowest-ranked side in Group D if they get through the play-offs.

France are second in the rankings, the Netherlands sixth and Austria 24th.

If Wales were to win the group they would the second-placed side from Group F in the last 16.

If they finish second it would mean a game against the second-placed team Group E. Wales might fancy that with Group E looking like a relatively weaker group.

If they finish third, like with Scotland, it is harder to predict at this point. It would be the winner of Group B, C or E though. So potentially Spain, England or Belgium.

  8. 'Tartan Army will be ecstatic'

    Leanne Crichton

    Former Scotland international on Sportsound

We've got to be pleased with this. You've got all the preparation you need to do your best.

The Tartan Army will be absolutely ecstatic with that.

  9. 'Hopefully we can set the tournament off with a good match'

    Scotland

Scotland manager Steve Clarke: "First of all, it's nice to have clarity. You know who you're going to face, you know the opposition and now we can start preparing."

On their first match against Germany: "It's good, you know what you're up against. Nice to open the tournament, nice to be involved in that first game and hopefully we can set the tournament off with a good match. We've got to make sure it's not about the occasion and it's about the match. We look forward to it, it's an exciting draw. I don't think it mattered who we were going to get, it was always going to be exciting for us. Nice to be involved in the draw process and looking forward to next summer now."

On facing Hungary and Switzerland: "Two good teams, we'll be competitive in the matches and I'm sure they'll be competitive too. It's a good group, an evenly balanced group and I look forward to it."

"We've got a really good idea now on where we will be based and how we will prepare for the tournament. The homework can start now, I can start watching videos of matches and then some friendly matches in March which we will get organised as soon as we can and then look forward to next year.

On how Germany will host the Euros: "I'm sure they'll handle the Tartan Army and they better be ready for a lot of Scotsmen coming! It's great to be involved and hopefully everyone can have a great time next summer."

  10. Post update

Scotland are technically the lowest-ranked team in Group A, based on the Fifa world rankings.

They have a tough challenge ahead but with two teams guaranteed to progress from each group and then four of the best third-placed teams joining them, there is a chance Steve Clarke's side can get through.

If they top Group A they'll face the second-placed team from Group C so one of England, Denmark, Slovenia and Serbia.

If they finish second they'll face the second-placed team from Group C so one of Spain, Albania, Croatia, Italy.

If they finished third, it is harder to predict at this point, but it would be the winner of Group B, E or F so potentially Spain, Belgium or Portugal.

  11. 'Tough group for Scotland'

    James McFadden

Former Scotland forward on BBC Two

It's a tough group for Scotland but I think if they have everyone fit and available, they'll be confident they can get out of the group.

The opening game against Germany will be a great occasion and all the pressure will be on Germany to go and get a result and that should suit Scotland because against the better sides, they tend to do ok.

It's a tough group, I'm not going to lie and say I'm delighted with the group. I think Scotland will give a good account of themselves and be a very good side because they have had the experience of playing in the Euros before this group and the disappointment of those games. They will want to put it right.

The players will be supremely confident going into this group stage.

  12. Post update

During the draw many of you would have heard some audio disruption during the draw. It looks like a prank at the draw itself in Hamburg.

    Hopefully it wasn't too disruptive!

  13. 'Soft group for England'

    Chris Sutton

Former Chelsea striker on BBC Two

    On England's group:

I don't think Denmark are as strong as they once were, everybody fancied them at the World Cup and they had a poor World Cup. They huffed and puffed through their qualifying campaign and didn't have it easy.

There are some names we're familiar with, Rasmus Hojlund at Manchester United, Kasper Schmeichel. They'll be well organised but you suspect England will have too much for them.

Serbia is an interesting one; Dusan Vlahovic, Luka Jovic and Dusan Tadic, players who we are familiar with, that won't be easy but you'd say it's a pretty soft group for England.

  14. Post update

If England top the group and then win the last-16 tie, they would face the winner of 2A v 2B game in the quarter-finals.

That could mean Scotland, Germany, Spain, Croatia, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland.

    That could be very interesting.

  15. Post update

If England top Group C, which based on Fifa world rankings they should, they will face one of the third-placed teams from Group D, E or F in the last 16.

That still could be tough considering the depth in Group D in particular.

If they finish second in the group they'd face the winner of Group A in the last 16.

  16. No kick-off times on Saturday

    Howard Nurse

    BBC Sport in Hamburg

Now the draw is complete, Uefa will invite representations from broadcast partners across Europe and beyond.

The TV rights holders are allowed to make requests as to what time of day certain matches will take place (to suit their broadcast schedules), which means the order in which the fixtures are scheduled is likely to end up in a different order to the planned schedule.

It means there will initially be no published kick-off times for matches, but they should follow by Sunday.

In the coming days, BBC and ITV will meet to select their broadcast ‘picks’ as both share the TV rights in the United Kingdom.

  17. When would Wales' group-stage games be?

Wales still need to come through the play-offs, but their group-stage games would be:

    • 16 June v Netherlands in Hamburg
    • 21 June v Austria in Berlin
    • 25 June v France in Dortmund
  18. 'Extraordinary'

    Tom English

BBC Scotland's chief sports writer on Sportsound

It's the dream draw, opening game against the host nation. It doesn't get much better than that.

  19. When are Scotland's group-stage games?

    • 14 June v Germany in Munich
    • 19 June v Switzerland in Cologne
    • 23 June v Hungary in Stuttgart
  20. Post update

    Howard Nurse

    BBC Sport in Hamburg

That’s a highly favourable draw for England, who avoided clashing with the other home nations and the likes of Netherlands and Italy.
