Northern Ireland 1-6 Republic of Ireland

That is all from us, as the Republic of Ireland claim a convincing 6-1 victory against Northern Ireland at Windsor Park.

That was the Republic's sixth win from six games in the Women's Nations League as they now move to League A.

It is also set to be Eileen Gleeson's last game in charge with the Republic set to confirm their new permanent manager in the coming weeks.

For Northern Ireland, it was a disappointing night for Tanya Oxtoby's side and they will now face a relegation play-off which will determine whether they will play in League B or C of the next edition of the Nations League.

That game will take place in February.

You can read Andy Gray's match report from the game here.

FT: Northern Ireland 1-6 Republic of Ireland

Marissa Callaghan speaking after the game: "We are gutted with the score line but the thing for us is, we are at the start of our journey and we must take the positives from this.

"The score line doesn't reflect the game.

"Things are starting to click, I think we saw glimpses of that tonight but when you make mistakes against the top teams, you get punished."

Northern Ireland's most capped player on co-commentary

Gail Redmond has said before about finding a more settled team.

Tanya Oxtoby has experimented a lot in terms of team selection and formations. I think there's a better understanding of what she is looking for and she has got a better understanding of the players she has worked with so far.

She can take that into the games and hopefully that will be more positive.

  4. 'Class act McCabe'published at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

    Ashley Hutton
Former Northern Ireland defender on BBC NI Two

That's why she is one of the best players in the world, that's why she was nominated for a Ballon d'Or and that's Katie McCabe, she's a class act.

  5. 'Republic are ahead of us in their development' - Oxtobypublished at 20:14 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

FT: Northern Ireland 1-6 Republic of Ireland

Tanya Oxtoby speaking after the game: "I think when you play a team like the Republic, you see the quality they have. When you make mistakes like we did, you get punished.

"The players are really disappointed but it is a learning opportunity .

"The goals before half-time were a real sucker punch. We tried to do the right things, but we started the second half slow and we never recovered.

"The Republic are two or three years ahead of us in terms of development, our players want to be there."

  6. 'NI were more positive in terms of possession'published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

FT: Northern Ireland 1-6 Republic of Ireland

    Julie Nelson
Northern Ireland's most capped player on co-commentary

Northern Ireland were more positive in terms of possession from the first game was in the Aviva and that's the real big game experience that we need to build on.

Tanya Oxtoby said that was part of the experience tonight, bringing the game here because if you want to play in another major tournament, you need to be use to playing in these big game occasions.

    Ashley Hutton

Obviously the Republic of Ireland were clinical all night, it seemed to be every chance went in.

From a Northern Ireland perspective, the coaching staff have their homework to do as we are now conceding too many goals from set-plays and from crosses.

It was the same away from home so I think we miss the likes of Rachel Furness from the corners even the person beside me, Julie Nelson.

We lack a bit of height in those positions and if it's going to be one of our pitfalls, then we need to address that.

  8. 'What more can I ask for?' - Gleesonpublished at 20:07 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

FT: Northern Ireland 1-6 Republic of Ireland

Eileen Gleeson speaking after the game: "We are super happy with the win and performance and to get young players on.

"Six wins from six games, what more can I ask for? An amazing team and staff, I'm over the moon.

"Northern Ireland came, as we thought they would, and were competitive. We had to patient and those two goals in the first half was a real kickstart for us and a good way to go into the second half.

"We had lots of different scorers in different areas, I'm super proud.

"This team has a lot of potential and what we want is that consistency. This is the beginning of a new story, League A is tough, but it is where we want to be."

It's the build on, is she [Tanya Oxtoby] better prepared now six games in compared to where she was in September?

100% - I would say after Christmas you will see a more settled Northern Ireland team and one that will be hungry to really push on.

Northern Ireland 1-6 Republic of Ireland

Well, we did say it would be a cracker!

An utterly ruthless display from the Republic of Ireland sees them thrash Northern Ireland 6-1 at Windsor Park.

The result means that Northern Ireland miss out on promotion to League A of the Women's Nations League.

They will now face a relegation play-off next year, whilst the Republic make it six victories from six games to top the group in style.

After an even opening to the game, the Republic burst into life with two well-take goals in two minutes from Lucy Quinn and Heather Payne.

They then dominated the second half with two more quick goals just after the restart, the first a deft header from Kyra Carusa and the second the pick of the bunch, a stunning strike from captain Katie McCabe.

Louise Quinn and Caitlin Hayes headed home from corners, either side of substitute Kerry Beattie pulling a goal back for the visitors.

A tough night for Northern Ireland and a memorable one for the Republic.

Time for a lie-down after that!

Hayes gets a yard on McFadden and that's all it takes when you have the quality that the Republic of Ireland have.

They put the ball in the danger areas. It's the back post this time and the runner coming in just met it, perfectly timed again.

That's why Republic of Ireland are in the position that they are in.

Uncharacteristically, Kyra Carusa fires off target from close range.

Katie McCabe finds the striker with a nice pass inside and she takes a touch before shooting wide.

You would expect her to find the net from there.

    Caitlin Hayes (86 mins)

    This is madness.

Caitlin Hayes evades her marker Sarah McFadden and slides in at the back post to meet the corner and net a sixth goal for the Republic.

Another poor goal to concede from a Northern Ireland perspective.

Multiple changes from both sides as we enter the final 10 minutes of the game.

Goal scorers Lucy and Louise Quinn depart to be replaced by Izzy Atkinson and Chloe Mustaki.

For Northern Ireland, the energetic Megan Bell is on for Chloe McCarron.

    Gail Redmond

When Kerry Beattie came on in the second half, we knew about her quality and it's a striker's touch there.

It all starts from the hard work of Lauren Wade, the ball down the wing for Demi Vance and we get the corner.

It's about the delivery, Vance plays it into the danger area, Holloway gets the second phase and Kerry gets what is a consolation goal for Northern Ireland.

That is something to build on because there are 10 minutes left.

  19. CLOSE!published at 19:38 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2023

Northern Ireland 1-5 Republic of Ireland

Denise O'Sullivan drives forward and cuts the ball back to the onrushing Megan Connolly, whose curling effort deflects off Caragh Hamilton and behind for a corner.

Connolly is bemused that a penalty has not be awarded as the strike did appear to hit Hamilton's arm on the way behind, but with no VAR, the referee's decision is final.

It will just be a consolation but that's a great moment for Kerry Beattie, who is starting to make a habit of being in the right place at the right time in front of goal.
