Northern Ireland boss Tanya Oxtoby has challenged her players to deliver a "90-minute performance" in Friday's Women's Nations League trip to Albania.

Oxtoby's side go into the Albania game and Tuesday's home match against the Republic of Ireland with promotion and relegation both still a possibility.

With four points from four games, they are a point off second-placed Hungary.

"We've been a bit hit and miss with making sure we put a 90-minute performance together," said Oxtoby.

"We need to go over there and make sure we put in a 90-minute performance."

Northern Ireland entered Group B1 of the inaugural Women's Nations League targeting a top-two finish and promotion.

Scotland "haven't done themselves justice" in the Women's Nations League, but defender Sophie Howard insists they are "ready to put things right".

After four matches, Pedro Martinez Losa's side sit bottom of Group A1 with just one point.

They must finish with wins away to Belgium and at home to England to have a chance of avoiding relegation.

"It's been a tough campaign but we have everything to play for," said Leicester City centre-back Howard.

Scotland's sole point in the group came against Belgium at Hampden, with Howard's last-gasp header delivering a dramatic draw.

"We haven't done ourselves justice," added the 30-year-old. "We can compete with anyone, but for that to happen we need to show up and be at our best.

"I know we can do so much better than what we have shown. We've shown it in spells, but not consistently and I think that is something we want to develop to be at the highest level consistently."

  6. Hemp eyes 50th cap in crucial Lionesses matchpublished at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    England v Netherlands (19:45)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport

England forward Lauren Hemp says it would be "incredible" to win her 50th cap at Wembley Stadium in the Women's Nations League on Friday.

The Lionesses take on the Netherlands knowing they must win to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the 2024 Olympics on behalf of Team GB.

Sarina Wiegman's side are currently third in their group, three points below leaders the Netherlands.

"There's no better place than Wembley [to win my 50th cap]," said Hemp.

  7. Who needs what in Women's Nations League?published at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

England coach Sarina WiegmanImage source, Getty Images

Team GB will be at next summer's Olympics if nominated nation England reach the Nations League final, or finish third in the finals tournament if France make the final.

But, after losses away to the Netherlands and Belgium, Sarina Wiegman's team may not top Group A1 even if they win their final matches against the Netherlands and Scotland.

Scotland need to win their final two matches, and hope other results go their way, to avoid automatic relegation to League B. The side who finishes third in Group A1 will drop into the promotion and relegation play-offs in February.

The best Wales can hope for is a spot in the promotion and relegation play-offs. They face Iceland and Germany in home matches on 1 and 5 December respectively.

In Group B1, Republic of Ireland secured promotion to League A with two matches to spare after beating Albania in October.

Wins over Albania and the Republic in their final two matches may not be enough for Northern Ireland to finish second and reach the play-offs for a place in League A.

Two defeats could mean Tanya Oxtoby's side finish fourth and drop straight down into League C.

  8. How does the Women's Nations League work?published at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

OK, let's have a deep dive into the Women's Nations League, with the final fixtures of the group stages taking place from tonight [Friday, 1 December] to Tuesday, 5 December.

The 2023-24 competition consists of two leagues of 16 teams and a third of 19.

League A - the top division - and League B are split into four groups of four, while League C is made up of four groups of four and one of three.

The winners of each group in League A advance to next year's finals tournament, where the two finalists will qualify for Paris 2024.

If France, who have already qualified as hosts, are in the final, the winner of the third-placed play-off will reach the Olympics.

The winners of each group in Leagues B and C will be automatically promoted into the division above, with the fourth-placed finishers in Leagues A and B - and the worst-ranked third-placed side in League B - going straight down.

The second-placed sides in League B will meet the third-placed sides in League A in a two-legged promotion and relegation play-off for a spot in the top tier.

The three best-ranked runners-up in League C will also face the remaining three third-placed sides from the second tier in a play-off for a spot in League B.

  9. I'd like to see less VAR - Howepublished at 11:39 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

A final word from Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on the wider use of the video assistant referee.

He says he would like to see less interventions after his side missed out on a famous victory in Paris on Tuesday, when PSG were awarded a spot-kick in the eighth minute of stoppage time following a VAR review.

Referee Szymon Marciniak was asked to consult the pitchside monitor before ruling Tino Livramento had handled the ball inside the box when blocking a cross.

"I'd like to see less VAR," said Howe. "I don't have an issue with offsides because that is as close as it can be to being right, whether you agree with the decision, the lines give you a black and white yes or no. The rest, I'm not in favour.

"I still think it's just another person's opinion against another person's opinion. It's very subjective. I'd like to see less. I definitely wouldn't want to see more because I think it would ruin the game."

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has also been speaking with the wider media in his pre-match news conference on the impact of Tuesday's late penalty heartbreak in Paris and his injury-hit squad:

"There was a bit of reflection afterwards," said Howe. "A lot of disappointment in the dressing room. Collectively we felt we were minutes away from a historic result. When a new day comes you look at it slightly differently and you have to move forward and look forward to the next game.

"This season, especially, whether results are positive or negative they can't linger. We can't take them with us even for a couple of days because then that influences what happens in then future, and the future is always the most important thing.

"When something like that happens, you allow the players to be emotional, but we don't want to view ourselves as victims. It's happened, we have put it to the back of our minds and will use it as motivation for the future."

On the competitiveness of his injury-hit squad: "I still think we have got a really good team on the pitch. I have said all through this injury this position we are in that we still have a very good team. Yes we have some youth in it but we also have some real experience in it as well, so we have a good mix and I still feel we are good enough to get positive results."

Home fans also reported missiles being hurled into the stadium from outside the ground as police stopped the away fans from entering.

Uefa said it a statement that it "strongly condemns the unacceptable violence".

It added: "Uefa is in the process of gathering all official reports from the game before deciding on potential next steps."

  13. Kelleher 'will get a little run and what a way to start it'published at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Liverpool 4-0 LASK

    Emma Smith
    BBC Sport at Anfield

One player who came in for Liverpool was goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who looks set to start the next few games with Alisson sidelined. The Republic of Ireland international, 25, was reassuringly solid and made a number of good saves in a very open second half.

"He will get a little run in the team and what a way to start that run, keeping the clean sheet," former Liverpool striker Michael Owen told TNT Sports.

"He wasn't overworked but everything he had to do he did well. He has never let the team down. He has always done well when he has come in."

Former Liverpool midfielder Joe Cole added: "Klopp has always talked glowingly of him. He has always said he is the best number two goalkeeper in the league.

"It is a thankless job - you are rarely used and when you are you are in the limelight, but Liverpool are in safe hands with him. There is an air of calm to the back four.

"He will be tested with Liverpool's high line. He will have some work to do and a role to play for sure."

Speaking after West Ham secured their place in the Europa League knockout stage with victory over Serbian side Backa Topola, David Moyes said: "To me, it looked as if it would be 0-0 and we weren’t going to score because we weren’t creative enough and we didn’t do enough.

"We got there in the end. It’s another away win in Europe in the bag and I’ll take that and go back home with it."

On squad rotation, he added: "We wanted to give players who haven’t played chances to play. We did that at Olympiacos and we’ve done it tonight, because I want to keep the squad together and keep them fit.

"We’re going into a really busy period and I’m going to need some of them to play at different times, so it gives me a chance to see how they are and how they’re performing.

"Some of them are going to have to step up and play better, and we know that. It’s a bit easier to be critical when we win than when we lose and we need to play better than we did.

"We had some good moments at times, but we never really punctured or threatened them and got our centre-forwards in positions to score, so that’s a disappointment."

Tomas Soucek scored another late winner as West Ham secured their place in the Europa League knockout stage at Serbian side Backa Topola.

It had been a turgid display from David Moyes' side with only one shot on target until Soucek met Maxwel Cornet's cross for his fifth goal in his past five games for club and country.

He has scored in three successive West Ham games for the first time, with each a winning goal, and coming later than the 88th minute.

Soucek's goal means West Ham have scored in 20 successive European games, winning 18 and losing only once.

It leaves Moyes' side top of Group A and they only need a point against Freiburg on 14 December to earn top spot, and avoid a play-off in February against a side finishing third in their Champions League group.

  16. A top result and really good performance - Klopppublished at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Liverpool 4-0 LASK

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said: "[There were] two top results for us tonight in the group, a lot of positives from the game.

"This game should have been put to bed [before half-time], we should have finished it off but we didn't. The third goal just after half-time was helpful.

"We worked for the clean sheet, which is what we wanted, so a top result and really good performance."

  17. Reds to go through as group winnerspublished at 10:44 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

    Liverpool 4-0 LASK

Back to Thursday's European games now and Liverpool reached the last 16 of the Europa League as group winners with victory over LASK at Anfield.

Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo both struck in the space of three first-half minutes before Mohamed Salah's penalty after the break and Gakpo's second late on wrapped up a straightforward win.

Toulouse's failure to beat Union St-Gilloise ensures Liverpool cannot be caught at the top of Group E. The Reds go through to the knockouts and avoid February's play-off round.

  18. Man Utd ownership news 'soon'published at 10:36 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

Newcastle v Man Utd (Sat, 20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

So, after being told Manchester United's ownership status should be clarified during last month's international break, it was disappointing to discover it wouldn't be, partly due to the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States.

This week was seemingly ruled out because many of the club executives were in Istanbul for the Champions League encounter with Galatasaray.

So, the expectation is it will now be next week. I sense those involved are aware the situation is now dragging on. I have had a message back to say it will all be done 'soon'.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group is set to take a 25% stake in the club and they can't wait to get started.

A final word from Eddie Howe on the form of 21-year-old full-back Tino Livramento, who has filled in on the left side of defence: "He's done really well. I think good players can play in different positions. Playing on a different side is certainly very different for him but what I love about his performances recently is he has just got on with it. He has not thought too much. He is just a very good player."

  20. 'In big moments you are looking for big players to step up'published at 10:25 Greenwich Mean Time 1 December 2023

Newcastle v Man Utd (Sat, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe on Saturday's opponents Manchester United: "I think they are very good games. We respect their team and their manager. They are an outstanding team and I think these games against the bigger clubs are always very difficult and always decided by fine margins.

"In big moments you are looking for big players to step up and potentially win you the game. I think that is the situation we are in, but we know we are going to have to be at our very best to win."
