    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Much better from Atletico as they find top-scorer Antoine Griezmann for the first time.

The Frenchman picks the ball up just on the edge of the box and drives forward but his shot is charged down and bounces back off him for a goal kick.

    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

There's a vast difference in the tempo and intensity that the two sides go about their attacks.

Barcelona are swift as they transition through the thirds while Atletico are much more pedestrian.

Atleti get over the halfway line for just the second time in this game but Barca have the bodies back to quell the move.

    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Barcelona swing a free kick into the box, it was from a central position and difficult to execute, and two players are found offside.

Xavi will be pleased with the way his side have started here.

    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

At the other end, Barcelona hit back with a chance of their own.

Robert Lewandowski makes a great run across the backline and meets a cross but he can only head behind for a corner, actually it hit him on the nose!

He seemed to be at a really awkward angle when he met the ball from Raphinha.

  5. Postpublished at 6 mins

    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid get over the halfway line for the first time in the game as Nahuel Molina works a lovely one-two with Marcos Llorente.

Molina gets a shot away and beats goalkeeper Inaki Pena but Ronald Araujo is on the line to clear.

  6. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

This hasn't taken long to come to life, Atletico keep trying to play out from the back and it's not working for them.

This time Joao Felix intercepts and finds Robert Lewandowski but the Poland striker sees his shot deflected behind for a corner.

Jan Oblak collects the corner at the second time of asking and stays down holding his back.

  7. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Barcelona 0-0 Atletico Madrid

It's always nice to see both sides wearing their traditional home kits, not sure why but it's pretty pleasing on the eye.

Barcelona are straight on the attack as Raphinha dances through the Atletico defence but gets his angle wrong and slides it wide of the far post.

    Here come the players.

The tunnel is massive at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, Barcelona's temporary home.

So much so that it has been split into two with the respective sides not even getting a glimpse of each other until they walk out on to the field.

And we have a late change in Barcelona's starting 11 too.

Andreas Christensen has been drafted in to replace Inigo Martinez, who appears to have picked up an injury during the warm-up.

We are running slightly behind schedule for kick off too.

    Shouldn't be too long!

  10. Clash of stylespublished at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

Barcelona v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

Barcelona made a great start to their title defence, avoiding defeat in their opening 10 games, but a 2-1 loss at home against Real Madrid left boss Xavi with some questions to answer.

They have since recovered well, claiming seven points from a possible nine, but they face another stern test with Atletico Madrid coming to town.

Atleti are only clear of Barcelona on goal difference but they also have a game in hand and have won 10 of their 13 engagements this term, including a 3-1 win against cross-city rivals Real in September.

Their physical and rugged approach is in stark contrast to that of Barcelona, who attempt to play the game in a much more technical fashion.

    Which style will prevail tonight?

Barcelona v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

    • Barcelona have won their last three meetings with Atletico Madrid in La Liga, all three since Xavi took charge, having failed to win any of their previous four against Los Rojiblancos in the competition (D2 L2).
    • Atletico Madrid have failed to win any of their last 17 visits to Barcelona in LaLiga (D5 L12) since a 3-1 win in February 2006 under Jose Murcia, their second-longest winless run away to Barca in the competition after a 20-game run between 1945 and 1963.
    • Robert Lewandowski has scored Barcelona's last two home goals in La Liga (both against Alaves) and could become the first player to score three in a row for Barcelona at home in the competition since Lionel Messi in February 2021 (three).
    • Antoine Griezmann has not scored in any of his 13 games as an Atletico Madrid player against Barcelona in La Liga.

Barcelona forward Joao Felix lines up against his parent club tonight.

The Portugal forward scored for the first time since 19 September to help Barca beat Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday.

He has only registered once in La Liga since making the switch in the summer, hitting the opener in a 5-0 win against Real Betis on 16 September.

Felix isn't the only player set for a reunion tonight with Antoine Griezmann and Memphis Depay representing Atletico.

Griezmann left the Madrid club for Barcelona in 2019 but he returned to the Spanish capital, initially on-loan, in 2021 and re-signed permanently in 2022.

The France international has since become the club's all-time leading scorer with 170 goals - surpassing the previous record of Luis Aragones, who netted 154 times.

Depay left Barca for Atleti in January but is only on the bench tonight as he continues to work his way back from a long-term injury.

Barcelona v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT)

It has been a chaotic day in the Premier League - 4-3, 3-3, 3-2, 2-2 and 1-1 were the results if you've been hiding under a rock somewhere.

It hasn't been quite as exciting in La Liga with a couple of goalless games and a 1-1 draw.

Hopefully this is the match to buck the trend though.

There has only been one goalless draw in the last 15 meetings across all competitions when Barcelona have hosted Atletico Madrid.

It is no shock to see Real Madrid, record 35-time champions, sitting top of La Liga, but few would have tipped Girona to be going toe-to-toe with the capital-based club.

Girona, who finished 10th last term, are enjoying just their fourth ever season in the top-flight and have amassed the same number of points as Real but are second on goal difference.

It has been a remarkable start to the campaign for the city which lies just over an hour northeast of Barcelona in the Catalan region.

Former Middlesbrough striker Cristhian Stuani scored twice on Saturday to seal a 2-1 win against Valencia, ensuring they keep pace with Real, who beat strugglers Granada 2-0 later in the day.

Barcelona's iconic Nou Camp is currently undergoing redevelopment, so they are playing their home games four miles down the road at the much smaller Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

The stadium, built in 1927, has a capacity of just over 54,000 - some 45,000 fewer seats than the Nou Camp - and has previously been the home of Espanyol and American Football team the Barcelona Dragons.

Barcelona have settled into life at the new venue with nine victories and one defeat across all competitions, losing only to Real Madrid.

It has a very different look and feel to that of the Nou Camp, which is due to be completed for November 2024, and might give Atletico Madrid the chance to address their torrid record on the road against Barca.

Atletico have not won a La Liga game at Barcelona since 2006 when a Fernando Torres double either side of a strike from Maxi Rodriguez helped to cancel out Henrik Larsson's effort in a 3-1 win.

  18. Team news - both sides unchangedpublished at 19:33 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023
