Both sides had wonderful results in Europe through the week. It sets this one up perfectly.

I'll be astounded if it disappoints.

There's a lot of Rangers supporters slightly worried about this game. Aberdeen have, against Hearts at home and against Frankfurt, taken a bit of form back.

  2. Relive some cup classicspublished at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

This is the seventh League Cup final between Rangers and Aberdeen.

They haven't met at this stage since October 1992 and the Dons have prevailed just once in the previous six - in 1989.

Those finals have included some corking games.

  4. How did Aberdeen get to the final?published at 14:26 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

Aberdeen made hard work of a 2-1 win away to Stirling Albion and then got past 10-man Ross County by the same scoreline.

The Dons recovered from a red card to mug Hibs in a drab semi-final, with Bojan Miovski breaking away to score the only goal minutes after Jack McKenzie was given his marching orders.

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

Rangers had to come from behind to see of Morton at Ibrox back in August.

That 2-1 win over Championship opposition has been their sternest test as they hit four past Livingston and coasted to a 3-1 semi-final success against Hearts.

  6. 'Two up top positive for Aberdeen'published at 14:21 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

Rubezic can be a little bit rash. He's very strong but he can get pulled out of position.

I thought they might have gone with one up top, but two is a positive statement. Sokler and Miovski caused Rangers problems at Pittodrie.

The midfield three is the strongest Barry Robson has.

  7. 'Great occasion for McCausland'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

    Steven Thompson
Former Rangers striker on BBC Sportsound

There's clearly been injury problems for Philippe Clement to deal with, but this is as strong a team as he could have started with. He didn't have the luxury that Aberdeen had of making wholesale changes.

It's great to see young Ross McCausland starting the final, a great occasion for him. Todd Cantwell comes back in, that's a no-brainer. Lammers would have been the only other player to play at 10.

Balogan and Goldson is the preferred choice of centre-half, so that's no surprise. Sterling in the middle of the park was the other question mark. That's one area where Rangers are struggling.

  8. Both camps in buoyant moodpublished at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

Things are looking brighter for both clubs, which wasn't necessarily the case just a few weeks ago.

Aberdeen fans were fuming after a home defeat to Kilmarnock left them second bottom of the Premiership but that has been followed by confidence-boosting victories over Hearts and Eintracht Frankfurt.

Rangers confounded expectations by winning away at Real Betis to top their Europa League group, despite dropping points home and away to section minnows Aris.

The Ibrox side remain second in the league but an unbeaten run since Philippe Clement arrived and Celtic's dip in form has narrowed the gap.

It may be a dreich day in Glasgow, blustery and wet, but that can't dampen the spirits of these fans.

Some folk will say this is decent weather for a game of football, but it's certainly not a day for kickin' about a grass pitch in your Sunday best.

Both sets of players, suited and booted, have had their wee pre-match pitch inspection.

Despite the drizzle, Cyriel Dessers took his time, he was the last Rangers player off the pitch. The big man will still be on cloud nine after that goal on Thursday.

  11. Sterling in midfield as Cantwell returns for Rangerspublished at 13:58 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

Philippe Clement makes a trio of changes following a seismic midweek win over Real Betis in Seville.

Out go Ben Davies, who drops out altogether, the suspended Jose Cifuentes and Sam Lammers.

Todd Cantwell returns to the XI after missing the trip to Spain for personal reasons and he's joined by Leon Balogun and Dujon Sterling, who looks set to be deployed in a defensive midfield role.

No Ryan Jack on the bench, while Nico Raskin, Tom Lawrence and Danilo also remain absent.

  12. Miovski passed fit for Aberdeenpublished at 13:56 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Rangers v Aberdeen (15:00)

The big news for Aberdeen is that Bojan Miovski has shrugged off a hamstring niggle to start.

The striker was among many regulars rested for their excellent midweek win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

Also coming back in are Graeme Shinnie, Leighton Clarkson, Jamie McGrath, Nicky Devlin, Richard Jensen, Ester Sokler and Jonny Hayes.
