  2. 'Difficult match but a brilliant experience for our players'published at 22:42 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

Wigan boss Shaun Maloney, speaking to ITV: "I'm proud of my players. It was a difficult match. When you play an opponent that has that much talent in the final third, it's very hard to then press. I was really happy with our players. There were moments early and in these games, you have to take those chances. In fairness, Manchester United had a lot of chances as well. Difficult match but a brilliant experience for our players."

On penalty decision: "I've seen it again. There is contact. I can understand why the referee has given it."

What Wigan can do better: "There's still times that we can have more belief in how we play. We have to be more aggressive when we defend and that's tough. They have very good players. We have a lot of work to do. The last six or seven months with what we've been through, it gives you a taste for more. We have to stay in League One and go from there."

On financial positives: "This tie has been good financially but that won't have an effect on the playing squad. There are historical financial things that need to be sorted. I think this club was bought in seven to 10 days, that normally takes months. I appreciate what the owner has done."

Marcus Rashford has been involved in a goal in each of his last three Manchester United appearances in all competitions (one goal, two assists), his longest such run since February last season (six games).

Bruno Fernandes has scored 28 of his 32 penalties for Manchester United in all competitions, including seven of his last eight. Indeed, since his debut for the Red Devils it is at least six more than any other Premier League player (Mohamed Salah next most with 22).

  6. 'Job done'published at 22:29 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, talking to ITV: "The FA Cup is all about winning, it is knockout. You want to finish the job. That is what I said in the dressing room 'job done'."

Should United have scored more?: "Oh, definitely. In the first half I think we created five or six very good chances. I think it was very good football. We should have taken more, but if you don't score you have to stay focused and I think we did that tonight."

On why they missed chances: "I don't know. You can't always say why you've missed chances. There were some good attacks and good chances, but we didn't take them, but the way we created them was OK."

On if there was enough contact for the penalty: "I haven't seen. I can't tell. It was too far away from my position."

On Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his planned purchase of a 25% stake: "It is an inspiration. Everyone is optimistic. There is a lot of work to do. We've had a lot of setbacks and I think in the summer we were in a good way but it is a journey, it is a project and now we have to deal with some setbacks but we will keep alive, survive it and strike back."

On whether they are thinking about winning the FA Cup: "It is too far. You have to go game to game, especially in the cup. Our focus is on Spurs now."

As a United fan, I’d love to see someone analyse how bad our corners have been. The last one, straight out, sums it up.

Since being eliminated by Swansea City in the third round in 2014, Manchester United have progressed in each of their last 10 such ties in the competition, conceding just one goal during that time.

  9. 'We're looking to the future with the good energy'published at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    FT: Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Diogo Dalot, speaking to ITV: "I think we created a lot of chances. We could have put the ball in the net more than we did. Overall we controlled the game, we had some good moments and I'm glad that we won."

Opening scoring: "It gave us more confidence. We were needing the goal so we could be more calm and not rushing to score. We created a lot and could have scored more. It's what we missed today."

On Sir Jim Ratcliffe: "It brings some good, new energy with positive feelings. We're looking to the future with the good energy. You can feel at Carrington the motivation they have brought in."

Confidence to win trophies: "That's why we're here. We're Man United and we want to win everything."

Thoroughly professional performance from Man Utd, excellent interplay, full of attacking intent and energy. Only criticism is that they should have scored at least six.

    FT: Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

A professional, well deserved and much needed victory for Erik ten Hag's Manchester United side.

Wigan never really looked like getting back in the game after Diogo Dalot's 22th-minute curling strike, with Bruno Fernandes finally getting United's second from the penalty spot after Rasmus Hojlund, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay had all been guilty of missing a number of chances.

The hosts kept fighting until the end, but United were just too strong for them.

It's Newport or non-league Eastleigh away for United in round four later this month.

    FT: Wigan 0-2 Man Utd

I don't think anyone can argue that Manchester United deserved to win the game.

Erik Ten Hag's side had 33 shots, 14 on target, compared to Wigan's nine.

The Reds boss may just be frustrated that they didn't win by a bigger margin.

Very professional performance for Manchester United. It did have the potential to be a banana skin.

It is an attendance of 22,870 - the highest for a football match at DW Stadium since 23,001 watched Wigan play against Aston Villa on 19 May, 2013 - the Latics' last match in the Premier League.

But it's the 7,506 following Manchester United that are going home the happiest, barring a remarkable turnaround.

Rashford has had a lot of opportunities to cut it back to someone in the area but he's seemed to have made the wrong choice every time.

    He has looked sharp though.

United work a corner out to Raphael Varane, who had opted to stay back.

He decides to take on the shot but it deflects wide, despite the scrambling efforts of Sam Tickle.

The resulting corner comes to nothing.
