That counter attack from Wigan was like lightening.

    End to end!

Bruno Fernandes tries to find a United body on the edge of the area with a corner but it is cut out.

Wigan counter and Martial Godo tries to cut inside but Kobbie Mainoo gets back to make the tackle.

The resulting corner is collected by Andre Onana in the end.

Another big chance comes and goes for United.

A cross ends up falling for Scott McTominay, who has time and space to find the far corner, but he's a little hesitant and Liam Morrison deflects his effort behind.

    Wigan 0-1 Man Utd

United are just casually passing the ball around, largely in their defensive third, at the moment.

There isn't a great urgency or intent to get that second goal at the moment.

    Sam Tickle again!

The Wigan keeper has featured in England Under-21 squads and you're seeing why tonight.

He's down quickly again to tip away a Kobbie Mainoo strike from the edge of the area.

Raphael Varane is still receiving treatment. He's got a cut on his nose that is currently being patched up.

Wigan make their first change of the night.

Top-scorer Stephen Humphrys is replaced by Josh Magennis.

Humphrys goes straight down the tunnel. He did miss the last game with a hip injury.

Wigan are really tight and close defensively. They cannot afford to concede again because you would think that would be game done.

Raphael Varane is down and holding his face as Thelo Aasgaard's hand catches him.

I don't think there was any intent there.

Anthony Taylor doesn't think so anyway and with no VAR then Aasgaard will face no punishment.

A game where the officials are getting the decisions correct without VAR. Could this be the future of football!!

Out of nowhere, Wigan are in the United box.

United switch off at a throw in and Thelo Aasgaard is able to get in behind the Reds defence.

He drills a cross into the box but Martial Godo is unable to control and United clear.

Wigan have come out in the second half in exactly the same shape and structure. It might get to the 60 minute mark until things change. They need to keep it tight and stay in the game.

As I say that one ball cuts Wigan in half.

Bruno Fernandes steps over the pass and Rasmus Hojlund then flicks round the corner for Fernandes to run onto.

The Reds captain opens his body up, trying to curl into the far corner, but his effort is blocked.

A scrappy few minutes with United intent on keeping possession but not showing a particular urgency or desire to break through the lines.

What have Wigan got for us in the second half and can they turn this around? The second half started as the first ended with United dominating the ball and Marcus Rashford shooting just wide.

But, while it remains 1-0, Wigan fans, players and coaching staff will still believe they can do something sensational.

Man Utd are picking up as they left off in the first half. Good early signs from them.

Marcus Rashford cuts in from the left, selling Stephen Humphrys, who looks to get a tackle.

The winger screws his effort comfortably wide of the far post though from the edge of the area.

  20. Postpublished at 21:20 Greenwich Mean Time 8 January

    Wigan 0-1 Man Utd

The early stages of the second half has followed a very similar pattern to the first.

United are dominating possession and looking to find a way through the hosts.
