  1. Europa League draw on the waypublished at 12:08 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Next up it's the Europa League knockout play-off draw.

A quick change of background from Champions League branding to that of the Europa League and we're about to get going at Uefa HQ in Nyon, Switzerland.

Retired centre-back Julien Escude is helping out with this draw, he won the Uefa Cup twice during his career with Sevilla.

This season's Europa League final takes place in Dublin at the Aviva Stadium.

Again, a reminder that we have no British teams waiting to learn their fate - Brighton, Liverpool, Rangers and West Ham are all through to the last 16 so they can just focus on domestic assignments for the next few months.

Some big names to keep an eye on, though, with AC Milan and Benfica both dropping down from the Champions League, while Roma, Marseille and Sporting Lisbon all finished second in their Europa League groups and have to come through this additional round.

Good draw for both English teams and as a City fan I’ll be cheering on both, we need to keep our coefficient up to get that extra place.

  4. City no strangers to Danish drawpublished at 11:57 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Manchester City should be pretty happy with their draw against Danish Superliga champions FC Copenhagen, who will feature in the last 16 of the Champions League for the first time.

City have faced Danish opposition on eight previous occasions, winning five, drawing two and losing one.

In the second qualifying round, they lost 1-0 when hosting Midtjylland in the 2008-09 edition of the Uefa Cup but won the return 1-0 and then advanced via a penalty shootout.

Man City also came up against Danish opponents later in that Uefa Cup campaign - facing Aalborg in the last 16.

Felipe Caicedo and Shaun Wright-Phillips scored to help City win 2-0 in the first leg but a 2-0 loss on the road led to another penalty shootout - City prevailed 4-3.

Finally, they have met with FC Copenhagen on four occasions, winning two and drawing two.

Both meetings on home soil have ended with City coming out on top but they've been held in both games on the road.

  5. Both English teams 'should be very happy'published at 11:55 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

The draw has been very kind to the two English teams and both should be very happy.

Arsenal have won all three previous home encounters against Porto, although they have never won at the Estadio do Dragao.

City played the Danish champions in the group stage last season, drawing 0-0 in Denmark but winning handsomely 5-0 at home.

The only good news from that UCL last-16 draw is that the big teams have avoided one another bar Napoli/Barcelona. The quarter-finals will be fireworks.

    Saeed

Arsenal will be delighted with that, avoid a tricky game against Inter Milan and will fancy their chances. In general, PSG are very lucky to avoid the big teams, but it would also be very typical of PSG to somehow lose to Sociedad.

  7. Arsenal edge head-to-head record with Portopublished at 11:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Arsenal will face Porto in the knockout stage of the Champions League for the fourth time in the competition's history.

The last time the two sides faced each other was in the 2009-10 round of 16, when Arsenal overturned a 2-1 loss in the first leg with a thumping 5-0 win at Emirates Stadium to advance on aggregate.

Prior to that, they were in the same group in 2008-09 and 2006-07.

On those occasions, Arsenal claimed a 2-0 victory in 2006-07 before a goalless draw in the away leg. However, in 2008-09, the Gunners were defeated 2-0 in Porto but went through courtesy of an emphatic 4-0 victory in the home leg.

Overall, in the six games they've met one another, Arsenal have won three, Porto have won two and one meeting was a draw.

It is also worth noting that Arsenal were knocked out of last year's Europa League in the last-16 stage by Portuguese opposition - Sporting Lisbon on penalties.

The last time we won a last-16 tie was against Porto and due to Lord Bendtner’s hat-trick. Hopefully, we can end 13 years of hurt here! (Also that was the first time since the 1970s we won a knockout tie from behind, but since did that against BATE Borisov in the Europa League).

  9. European draws still to comepublished at 11:35 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

The draws for the knockout play-off phase of the Europa League (12:00 GMT) and Europa Conference League (13:00 GMT) are still to come.

We'll keep you across those later.

There won't be any British interest, though.

Brighton, Liverpool, Rangers and West Ham all topped their respective groups in the Europa League and advance straight to the last 16 - the draw for that takes place on 23 February.

In the Europa Conference League, Aston Villa have also got a bye beyond the knockout play-off round and will feature in the last 16, with the draw also set for 23 February.

Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen finished third in their group and are out of the Conference League.

Porto might seem comfortable for Arsenal compared with PSG or Napoli, but Arteta still has to prove he can manage European knockout matches. Last season Arsenal were eliminated [from the Europa League last-16] by an even weaker Portuguese side, Sporting Lisbon.

And that's it from today's last 16 draw for the Champions League.

A pretty decent result for the two English clubs.

Arsenal, back in the Champions League for the first time since 2016-17, arguably have the tougher of the ties as they meet Porto, who finished second to Barcelona on head-to-head points.

Manchester City will continue the defence of their title against the lowest-ranked club still in the competition, according to the Euro Club Index, external.

FC Copenhagen did show they can mix it with English clubs in the group stage, though, beating Manchester United 4-3 in Denmark.

So it is FC Copenhagen for Manchester City.

The Danish side, who are ranked 79th on our Euro Club Index, external, surprisingly qualified ahead of Manchester United (16th) and Galatasaray (50th).

They are the weakest team remaining in the competition. The other 15 teams are all ranked in the top 33 in Europe.
