  1. 'Chelsea are dangerous opponents'published at 10:26 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Chelsea v Newcastle (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

On whether the Carabao Cup becomes more important now they've exited the Champions League, Eddie Howe said: "I don't know if it becomes more important, as the importance is always there.

"Chelsea are dangerous opponents, they have a vastly experienced manager.

"The semi-finals, both games, were very special [last year]. After Southampton away you could hear the supporters and what it meant. The dream, of course didn't turn to reality, but maybe this year."

Liverpool/United was terrible for 90 minutes. Neither side found anything to inspire, and that leaves the only talking point to be Dalot's red card. This one really irks me. VAR has stepped in this year with so many controversial decisions, and yet when the player is rightly complaining about a decision that's not gone the right way, he gets booked not once but twice! VAR could surely be having a word in Michael Oliver's ear and going, look Michael you've got that wrong, it's their throw, book him once by all means but to send him off is harsh. VAR was to sort clear and obvious errors, well if that isn't one, then I don't know what is!

  3. Reaching last year's final 'has helped us'published at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Chelsea v Newcastle (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

On being runners-up in the Carabao Cup last year, Eddie Howe said: "We've seen the reward that you can get.

"The build-up to the final was incredible and seeing our supporters and how many went to London, but it was devastating not to get over the line. It has helped us this year, we know the prize if we get through."

  4. Botman's return 'makes a big difference'published at 10:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Chelsea v Newcastle (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

On whether Sven Botman's return has lifted team morale, Eddie Howe said: "All the players are popular with each. We have a camaraderie in the squad where everyone has a good feeling about each other.

"There are certain players who lift the team in particular and Sven is one of those. He gives players confidence around him and makes a big difference. He's got a big importance to us."

  5. 'We can raise our game against top teams'published at 10:07 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Chelsea v Newcastle (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

On opponents Chelsea, Eddie Howe said: "The two draws we had previously to this one were probably as tricky as you can get. We've played City, United and now Chelsea.

"The beauty of the two previous, is that it showed we can raise our game against top teams in a cup competition.

"We made great memories last year and we want to create more memories."

  6. Botman and Trippier back from injurypublished at 10:01 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Chelsea v Newcastle (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on team news: "Sven [Botman] rehabbed really well, so we'll have to make a decision on whether we want to start him in this game.

"He looked good when he came on so that was a good day really.

"As we sit here now, yes Trippier is available. But we have another training session, so we'll sit down and talk with him, but it's a boost to have him back."

On Elliot Anderson and Matt Targett, Howe added: "They are doing ok. Elliot has been to see another specialist. It has been a difficult injury because he hasn't been able to do too much. It's healing slowly as those things tend to. The second opinion was the same as the first but it's frustrating.

"Matt has had the operation on his hamstring and he's sticking to the target he has been given."

  7. 'Everton pulling together'published at 09:54 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Everton v Fulham (Tue, 19:45 GMT)

    Fulham

More from Fulham manager Marco Silva on Everton: "It's a tough game.

"They have shown resilience and you can see they click together with the fans, team and staff.

"We know when this happens at a club like Everton they are strong, it's not a surprise to me.

"They have good players and an experienced manager. Knowing what he demands from his players, it shows they are all together and that creates a strong connection between everyone at that football club.

"They are in a good moment like we are too."

  8. 'Harsh decision'published at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Everton v Fulham (Tue, 19:45 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva on Raul Jimenez's sending off against Newcastle: "We are seeing right now that any time they call the referee to the screen, more than 95% of decisions are already made from VAR.

"It's very difficult now to see a referee, maybe one or two examples, that they go against the VAR.

"VAR tries to convince them that has to be the decision. In some moments I believe the referee should stick with his own decision.

"Some other managers have also spoken about this as well. It was a harsh decision."

  9. 'Difficult to play at Goodison'published at 09:44 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva on facing Everton: "It’s really difficult to play at Goodison.

"It’s been a great reaction since the point deduction. It shows their resilience. It’s not a surprise to me; they have great players and a brilliant manager."

  10. 'Resilience and organisation'published at 09:41 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Everton v Fulham (Tue, 19:45 GMT)

    Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva on Saturday's 3-0 loss at Newcastle: "We showed resilience and organisation.

"Unfortunately, we conceded the first goal and it was difficult after that. It was a difficult game, it’s a difficult place to go."

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

We have plenty more Get Involved posts on Liverpool v Manchester United to get through, but keep them coming.

One stat that blew my mind last night was the fact Manchester United had not scored at Anfield in five years.

The last United player on the scoresheet was Jesse Lingard in a 3-1 defeat for the visitors on 16 December, 2018.

It's almost eight years since their last win at Anfield, when Wayne Rooney scored the only goal in a Premier League victory (17 January, 2016).

I don't really understand VVD's complaint to be honest. United are not good enough to get results at big clubs these days so of course they're going to go to these places with the plan of not losing. What did he expect?

    Dave

Liverpool can't have any complaints about how United set up. The onus is on the home team and they fluffed their lines. Some really poor performances from the main men. City dropping points again was a surprise. They'll strengthen in January and some players IMO will be looking over there shoulders. Not much quality over the weekend though.

  16. 'A lot of arrogance coming out of him'published at 09:13 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    Roy KeaneImage source, Getty Images

Former Manchester United midfielder was ready and waiting in the Sky Sports studio with an immediate response to Virgil van Dijk's comments, and he didn't pull any punches:

"We heard Van Dijk speaking there, obviously a lot of arrogance coming out of him, dissing United like that.

"He needs to be reminded himself, he's playing for a club that's won one title in 30-odd years.

"He said only one team wanted to win, Man United are buzzing with the point. Man United are in a difficult place, like Liverpool have been in a difficult place for many a year. So maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today."

Keane added: "That's arrogance. He says 'Man United were buzzing', 'Only one team came to play'. I came here many a time when I was at United, when Liverpool were in a tough place and they were happy with a draw.

"Sometimes players need a reminder, when they're playing for clubs like Liverpool and everyone's saying Man United are this and that - United are in a bad place, but for many a year Man United were in a good place. I wouldn't be disrespecting clubs like he is."

  17. 'Only one team tried to win'published at 09:05 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

Here is what Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said to Sky Sports after his side failed to convert one of their 34 shots on the Manchester United goal in Sunday's 0-0 draw at Anfield:

"If you see how we played the game, how we obviously had most of the ball and created some opportunities, I think there was only one team that were trying to win the game.

"Unfortunately, it didn't happen. So, that's why it's frustrating because we want to win every game of course, but especially if we play against a team like them."

Liverpool had eight shots on target, while Manchester United had six shots in total, with only one on target.

  19. Club World Cup scheduling issuespublished at 08:56 Greenwich Mean Time 18 December 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

As England's two most successful clubs were slugging it out at Anfield, they were also learning they will not be involved in the first edition of the expanded Club World Cup at the end of next season.

As it turns out, although the financial aspect will be a big bonus for those involved, I suspect Jurgen Klopp and Erik ten Hag won't be too bothered.

Fifa has capped the limit on clubs per country at the 32-team event at two and as Chelsea and Manchester City have already qualified by winning the Champions League, only Arsenal can increase the quota by lifting the trophy this season.

The final of the four-week tournament takes place in the United States on 13 July, which is four weeks before the Premier League usually starts and three weeks before the Community Shield.

If the players are given a mandatory three-week break - there are internationals between the end of the 2024-25 Champions League final and the start of the Club World Cup so no rest in that gap - they will basically have no pre-season.

Unsurprisingly, the various players' unions have complained about workload.
