He wriggles into space in the area before seeing his fierce low shot blocked for a corner.

The resulting set-piece comes to nothing.

Southampton have themselves a free-kick in a dangerous area after a handball.

The ball in, however, is well defended on the edge of the area.

League leaders Leicester were denied a huge win at Ipswich on Boxing Day only by an own-goal three minutes into stoppage time.

But they still head into their final game of 2023 six points clear at the top of the Championship - and eight games without defeat.

They face a trip to south Wales tonight against a Cardiff side who were held at home by Plymouth on Saturday and have won three and drawn two of their past 10 matches.

The Bluebirds sit just two points outside the top six and will be gunning for a coup to see out the year.

Second-placed Ipswich's lead over the chasing promotion pack has been decimated in recent weeks after a run of two points from three games.

If Southampton claim victory over Plymouth tonight the Blues will be just two points clear of the Saints, albeit with this game in hand.

They might be forced into some early January transfer business too with striker George Hirst having picked up a "significant" hamstring injury in the draw with Leicester on Boxing Day.

QPR are in need of points for a very different reason.

Their good run under new boss Marti Cifuentes has hit the buffers and they're now winless in four and five points adrift of safety.

That first half really felt like one-way traffic, and the stats emphasise just that.

But the one stat that really matters - the scoreline - remains untroubled.

Southampton will wonder how they don't have the lead at half-time.

They have hit the post once, had a audacious lofted effort land on the roof of the net and saw a big chance go begging just before the break.

Plymouth have had to settle for scraps in comparison, but it did take some excellent defending from Samuel Edozie to foil Morgan Whittaker late on.

Che Adams will be frustrated with this attempted finish, here.

The Scotland international gets everything right as he controls a pass from Kyle Walker-Peters, before spinning like a ballerina to get an attempt on target.

But it's a tame effort that Conor Hazard clutches.

There will be two minutes of added time to come.
