  2. 'After the first goal a lot of heads drop'published at 20:04 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United debutant Mason Holgate: "Quite a lot [went wrong] if we're losing 5-0 at home. I'm new to the boys but there's a lot we need to work on.

"Once the first goal comes in there's a drop in confidence. Before you know it you blink and the game is out of sight.

"After the first goal goes in a lot of heads drop. Only we can fix that on the pitch. It's about digging down. It got away from us too easily.

"It seemed too easy in the first half."

On the better second-half showing: "They were 5-0 up at that point so maybe they foot their foot off the pedal. You have to dust yourself down. There's still lots of games to go. It's still in our hands."

  3. 'Most important thing is to play safe'published at 20:01 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

FT: Sheff Utd 0-5 Aston Villa

    Aston Villa

Villa boss Unai Emery to Sky Sports: "We reacted very well after Tuesday. We were focused.

"We controlled the game. The last 10 minutes we conceded one goal, overturned by VAR, and two chances.

On not adding more goals: "We want to win. The result at the end, scoring goals is important but the most important thing is to play safe."

  4. 'We have to take it on the chin'published at 20:00 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

FT: Sheff Utd 0-5 Aston Villa

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder speaking to Sky Sports: "For our 30,000 Sheffield United supporters it wasn't good enough. Myself and my players have got to accept that responsibility. We have got well and truly taken to the cleaners - 4-0 down after 30 minutes there was never a chance of us getting back into the game.

"They were clinical in taking their chances but we were open and I have to accept that responsibility in terms of the way the team was set up. We have to take our medicine. This is what the Premier League is about, this is what it can do to you.

"It is not a nice feeling, there is no hiding place, for a manager - I am stood in that technical area for about 95 minutes but it felt like about three weeks - and for the players who are out there.

"Now everything that gets chucked at us - from our supporters, from the media, from everybody's opinion - we have to take that on the chin and accept."

  5. 'We have to apologise to our supporters'published at 19:58 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

FT: Sheff Utd 0-5 Aston Villa

    Sheffield United

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder to BBC Sport: "We were punished ruthlessly. It's a long way back from 4-0 down. Basic individual errors and organisational errors. I'll take the rap for that. It was an atheltic young side who got put to bed.

"Watkins' movement caused us a problem. Goals from Bailey and Tielemans were fabulous finishes. The goal just after half-time is difficult to take. I've been in that position as a player and a manager and there's no hiding place.

"You have to take your medicine. We have to accept that and apologise to our supporters because they've been superb. We've let them down this evening.

"We had a couple of really good chances to take the lead and then we've gone chasing. We've got excited. We've left big holes and they've picked us off.

"If you allow good players big holes and players go diving in and losing their shape, they'll find those pockets and produce that final finish. It can become messy which it did.

"There's always a lot of noise about when teams get done three, four, five. It's such a difficult environment to be in. Our fans stuck with us to the end.

"In that position everything becomes laboured and a reaction instead of an anticipation. Every ball seems to fall to them. You let a team the quality of Villa go 4-0 up and they'll be buzing and 10 foot tall and everyone looks like a super players which they are.

"We gave them a massive helping hand.

"I don't think there's anything to take out of today's performance. Nothing at all. We've been well and truly pumped. If people say there was only one goal in the second half it doesn't hit home with anybody who's been in the game.

"The stats are there. You have to take it on the chin. We've been outclassed and outfought in every department. That's what happens in the Premier League. Maybe in other divisions it's not as clinical and you have a chance to get back into this game.

"In this league they put you to bed and take you to the cleanwers. Whether they took their foot off the gas or our boys stuck to it is irrelevant.

"It's what you get paid for. I've had it before. It's not all been sunshine in my career. You lean on your experience and staff. We have to come in Monday morning and go again. We have to not blame people. We have to accept it, roll our sleeves up and go again. We have a huge game at Luton. We have to show more than we did this afternoon."

  6. 'I am always capable of going on a run'published at 19:50 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Aston Villa

More from Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, speaking to Match of the Day, on scoring his second goal in as many games after going six matches without a goal: "I am always capable of going on a run. It's just about the mindset and the belief - belief that my team-mates are going to give me the ball like they did today, then I have got to finish the opportunities that I get."

On importance of bouncing back from Newcastle defeat: "We needed it massively. Football is very fickle. We could have gone 17 points ahead of Newcastle. They drew today then we have won and the gap changes again. It changes very quickly. Really happy with our response and we now push on and hopefully can go on a good FA Cup run."

Villa boss Unai Emery to BBC Sport: "I'm happy because before the match we were very focused to react. We scored goals, created chances and stopped them. Winning away is difficult.

"It was better than we were thinking at the beginning. We were clinical. We conceded two good chances at the end of the match.

"Emiliano always wants to keep clean sheets, like a striker [with goals].

"They were playing at home and started very well, they created the first chances. We stopped them. We were breaking their pressure and creating spaces.

"We have to try to focus each match. We're really happy. Our aggression was fantastic."

  8. 'Massive win'published at 19:42 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins speaking to Match of the Day: "It's a massive win. Obviously the scoreline but also a great performance from the boys. It's massive for us to bounce back after the defeat midweek against Newcastle. Our away form hasn't been up to scratch so it was a big performance for us today and a great win."

VIlla goalscorer Alex Moreno: "Five goals is incredible, very clinical in front of goal. It's very important for us.

"Newcastle played really well [in the last game]. We didn't play very well. Today the reaction was very important. Away is very tough. A good performance.

"I am very happy for Ollie. He's very important for this team. Today he had a great performance. The most important thing is the clean sheet for Emi, the victory and the clean sheet.

"We have some tough games. We need the fans at home. It's very important for us.

"I'm very happy for this goal. I'm delighted. I dedicate the goal to my family, a lot of people have helped me a lot."

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

After the first five minutes we thought we were in for a game when Ben Brereton Diaz had a good chance but after that it was all Aston Villa. Sheffield United did keep going to the end though, you have got to give them credit for that.

  12. Postpublished at 19:30 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February

It's almost impossible to see Sheffield United staying up at this stage.

Nobody has ever beaten the drop after 10 points from 23 games. Nottingham Forest, in 17th, have double their points.

I have to give them credit - Sheffield United have stuck at it and had four or five good chances. They haven't laid down like in the Newcastle game.

    Chris Waddle
Ex-Newcastle winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

There was a touch of offside on the first one but definitely not the second one. Yes, could be. Very tight. I hate VAR me, it's the worse thing that ever came into football. People are standing around here for 10 minutes. Absolutely ridiculous. How did it take that time to decide on that?

  19. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 90+4 mins

    Sheff Utd 0-5 Aston Villa

Oh poor Sheffield United. The goal is indeed disallowed for offside. Chris Wilder doesn't look impressed.
