Not the ideal birthday bash for Anthony Gordon. The Newcastle winger gets a present from Ben White - a boot to the calf.

To all those Gunners stressing about the past 4-4 result, that was THIRTEEN years ago and, unsurprisingly, no members of that squad are playing today.

The tinny PA system informs us there will be three minutes of added time.

Newcastle have a spell of possession for the first time in the match, but are unable to make any headway down the left.

Hang about... Newcastle are in! Oh no, Miguel Almiron is offside. The Magpies winger didn't know it as he raced through, but he was unable to beat the alert David Raya.

Stunning stuff from Arsenal who have responded to the criticism which they faced after losing to Porto midweek.

Always amazed why players like Jorginho are sometimes criticised, presumably because they are not full of tricks. Give me him over show ponies like Neymar anytime.

Excellent save by Karius, really poor defending from Newcastle.

Excellent from Martinelli playing one across to Saka and his feet are quick, but he shouldn't be able to get that shot in.

    Arsenal 2-0 Newcastle

This is the game in a microcosm. Arsenal sharp, alert and intense. Newcastle dillying and dallying.

Bukayo Saka reacts quickly to collect a Gabriel Martinelli cross which is deflected out by a Newcastle defender and shows quick feet while the away defenders lumber around like they're stuck in treacle.

Saka's fierce rising shot is pushed to safety by Loris Karius.

Arsenal are keeping Newcastle locked up here. The home side might not even let them out of their half for the break.

No respite whatsoever for Newcastle. They clear their lines but the ball goes straight back to Arsenal and the hosts come again.

Sean Longstaff is on his heels. Gabriel Martinelli is not. The Arsenal winger jumps on the ball in a flash but lashes high and wide.

A short corner from Martin Odegaard gives Newcastle something else to think about.

The Arsenal skipper regaining the ball from Jorginho before clipping into the box. Sven Botman heads clear and Newcastle breath a sigh of relief.

    For now...

As one-sided as this is I still think we need a third. Seen too many 2-0 leads slip in the recent past. Heck we let a 4-0 lead slip to this team once upon a time.

That could have been one of the goals of the season - that was fantastic football. A lovely ball from Martin Odegaard to Bukayo Saka, it is beautiful football.

Just two inches too high for Martinelli.

Newcastle look shell-shocked they are standing off and there is no real pressing - they have to be a lot more aggressive in their press.

But, as we know, there is little chill from Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side.

They flick a switch again and carve Newcastle open like they're a succulent roast chicken.

Martin Odegaard flicks into Bukayo Saka and his cross is met by Gabriel Martinelli, who flies through the air like a caped North London superhero.

    Over the bar.

Arsenal are almost in again! Newcastle have blood pouring.

Sloppy and casual from Fabian Schar as he tries to play out in his own area, Martin Odegaard picking his pocket quicker than the Artful Dodger.

The Gunners skipper lays it square to Gabriel Martinelli, who is denied what seemed a certain goal by Sean Longstaff's brilliant sliding block.
