We've got a cooling break with players taking on some much needed fluids. The game is yet to heat up though, with neither goalkeeper tested.

Lovely counter on the far side, Themba Zwane loves to get forward and run at defenders.

It hits Calvin Bassey and there is a penalty appeal.

For me, Calvin Bassey's hands were down by his side. You're not getting a penalty from that, or should I say, you should not get one.

South Africa want a penalty as Khuliso Mudau broke free and his cross from the right hit the arm of Calvin Bassey.

But Bassey, who has impressed for Fulham in the Premier League this season, has both his arms behind his body so a penalty is never going to be given.

South Africa are coming into this one though and Percy Tau has a shot, but gets it all wrong as it rolls harmlessly to Stanley Nwabali.

A half chance for Nigeria as Ademola Lookman floats in a free-kick close to the left touchline and it is met by West Brom defender Semi Ajayi, free at the back post, but there's not enough power on the header and it is easy for Ronwen Williams.

You have to measure your pressing game in this kind of heat that the teams are playing in, or you can tire very quickly.

If you go for five/six minute spells high up the pitch and don't win the ball back the opponent will eventually find a way to play through you. I'm sure Nigeria will be wary of that and will be patient, especially early on in this game.

  8. 'Rather muted start to proceedings'published at 18 mins

All the noise inside the Stade de la Paix is currently being made by the travelling Nigerians whose horn section is in full effect.

But other than that, it is has been a rather muted start to proceedings, with the stadium probably less than half full and neither team exactly pushing the pace on the pitch.

The Super Eagles have controlled the ball but South Africa will have been prepared for that and are usually happy to sit back in the early stages.

A first shot on target for South Africa as Sphephelo Sithole tries his luck from 20 yards out and he strikes it well, but it is straight at Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali and he deals with it easily.

Michael: Really disappointing crowd numbers for a major semi-final. Are there only a few teams in Africa who can bring large numbers of fans or has the host nation lost interest?

Paul: The crowds are so sparse. Such a poorly attended event

Ola Aina swings in a cross from the left for Nigeria and Ronwen Williams, South Africa's hero in the quarter-finals, comes for the ball in a crowded penalty area but doesn't get there.

The cross goes all the way out to Nantes' Moses Simon and he wins a corner, but nothing comes from it.

    Nigeria 0-0 South Africa

South Africa have not been able to get out of their half much, when they do they are quickly pegged back as Themba Zwane, on the right wing, had started his run too early and was offside.

Both teams have been solid defensively so about which defense holds. A draw would not be a shock, and penalties a lottery. SA sportsmen and teams have been performing very well for a while, so the country is hoping they give us a reason to smile. The country needs it!

    Nigeria 0-0 South Africa

South Africa are playing in their fourth semi-final at the Africa Cup of Nations and their first since 2000, when they were eliminated by today’s opponents Nigeria (2-0).

The Bafana Bafana are hoping to reach their first Afcon final since 1998 (lost 2-0 against Egypt).

I don't think it would be flippant to say Nigeria are the superior side and are the favourites for this tie. They have the quality and will look to dominate possession and retain the ball.

For South Africa they will not be looking to take on the Super Eagles at that possession game, they will play their own game. It will be more of a defensive mindset, hence the inclusion of Xulu in midfield, he will offer some extra protection for in front of the defence.

Victor Osimhen, who helped Napoli to the Serie A title last season, had been an injury doubt coming into this match but was declared fit.

He's still out there and hopefully for Super Eagles fans his stomach pain is nothing to force him off.
