I think Nick Montgomery was trying too hard in his interview to accentuate the positives.

He said their build-up was good, it wasn't. Philippe Clement said Easter Road is a hard place to come. They've won seven of their 17 games at home this season.

Montgomery said his new signings have quality. If they do, Hibs will be fine. If they don't, it's hard times ahead.

St Johnstone needed a reaction from Saturday's shock cup exit at Airdrieonians, and manager Levein did get it eventually. The first half was poor from both sides, a non-event.

However, after the break it was Saints who created the better chances. The foul by Gordon that ended in Carey's goal being chalked off seemed soft, and then to concede a penalty in the same fashion was frustrating.

But the hosts bounced back well, with Diallang Jaiyesimi missing two opportunities, and Max Kucheraviyi hitting the frame of the goal. They are still winless in five and have only managed 14 goals in 21 games, but it was a solid home performance.

Aberdeen have now played half of their league games and it is unclear what their identity or style of play is. Manager Barry Robson has played a back five for most of the season, but it did not bring solidity or results and drew criticism about an overly direct style.

A switch to a back four since the turn of the year has allowed a more possession-based approach, but Aberdeen move the ball too slowly and play with no natural wide players.

At McDiarmid it meant they were narrow, slow and predictable, until the end of the match when things became stretched, and Miovski and substitute Ester Sokler had headed chances.

When Miovksi stroked in his 17th goal of the season from the spot, Aberdeen reverted to the back five to try to see things out with half an hour to play, but still looked vulnerable and conceded.

Saturday's meeting with Hearts is now huge for the Aberdeen manager. Lose and hopes of third spot will fade away, and there is little time to come up with solutions to the team's problems.

  5. Robson believes Aberdeen can catch Heartspublished at 22:26 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    FT: St Johnstone 1-1 Aberdeen

Asked on BBC Sportsound if he thinks Aberdeen can catch Hearts, Robson said: "We've got to believe that, and I believe that. We need to go and try our best to do that. We've still got a few games in hand on them.

"We want to go on a run and perform well. We did it last year. It's going to be a big ask.

"But we believe that and we've got to fight for every point. There tonight we had to make sure we get over the line and pick up the three points.

"That's a learning curve. But we just have to go and win games and get it right in both boxes."

Last season, Barry Robson took Aberdeen on an incredible charge to beat Hearts to third.

They currently trail the Tynecastle side by 16 points, though they do have three games in hand.

The manager was asked if they can catch them. Here's what he said...

  7. 'Frustrating' draw for Robsonpublished at 22:22 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    FT: St Johnstone 1-1 Aberdeen

Aberdeen manager Barry Robson tells BBC Scotland: "First half I thought we dominated possession without really threatening.

"We never penetrated or passed it through them enough. Second half the game became a bit basketball. We get a goal and they come at us a bit more.

"Then we've got to be calm and make sure we defend crosses better and don't get carried away in the game.

"Sometimes they will have a spell. We need to accept it and keep our structure and shape. But we got a but excitable and lost a goal.

"We should have been better in both boxes. We should have been better defensively for the goal and we should have taken our chances and created more at the other end.

"It does [feel like a missed opportunity]. We want to come here and win and we've got another tough game coming at the weekend.

"It's frustrating when you've got 12 minutes to go, and you need a bit of nous and experience. Just be calm and get the win. But we got a bit excitable."

  8. Saints 'redeemed themselves' from cup upset - Leveinpublished at 22:19 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

    FT: St Johnstone 1-1 Rangers

St Johnstone manager Craig Levein tells BBC Scotland: "The most pleasing thing for the match tonight was we redeemed ourselves [from Saturday]. Much more unity and togetherness.

"We have a goal chopped off and a penalty against us. I thought we deserved at least a point.

"The boys are saying the penalty was a penalty. They've been great in every single bar match bar Saturday and for 20 minutes against Kilmarnock. They've been really enthusiastic.

"You can't guarantee a win, but hopefully we're back on track and can push on from here."

  9. 'A pleasing evening' for Clementpublished at 22:16 Greenwich Mean Time 24 January

Rangers manager Philippe Clement tells BBC Scotland: "It's a well deserved victory and what I wanted to see. This is a difficult place to come to. It's not easy against a team like Hibs.

"With the ball we did the right things and scored three good goals. It's a pleasing evening. We had total domination [in the second half]. It's pleasing and what I want to see more and more."

On the transfer window: "I expect some things [to happen], everyone is working really hard on that. There's still one week to go, we'll see what happens."

On Todd Cantwell coming off at half-time: "He had a small muscle injury, we don't want to take a risk with players."

No Connor Goldson, no problem for Rangers.

The integral centre-back was suspended for the trip to Easter Road, which might have had some of the away support sweating as Nick Montgomery named another bold Hibs XI, but the visiting backline shut out the home side with a 13th clean sheet in 21 league games.

While Goldson was a noticeable omission, Fabio Silva was a noticeable inclusion.

The 21-year-old Wolves loanee, who diverted a decent chance wide in the first half, will need time to get up to full sharpness, but showed his quality on the ball in brief spells with neat composure.

Hibs eyes were on their Premiership debutant, but Maolida also looked rusty at times and ought to have burst the net when he struck straight at Butland from close range.

Emiliano Marcondes looked bright, though, and showed signs he can be an asset for Hibs going forward, but Montgomery still has plenty of fans to win over.

His side continue to struggle to control games for sustained periods with their bold 4-4-2 formation, one of a few reasons why many are still far from convinced.

    Willie Miller
Former Aberdeen defender on BBC Sportsound

The issue I have with Nick Montgomery is that he seems wedded to playing this way, but does he have the players to do that?

He seems strong when he talks about it, that'll he play this way even if it's not working. I don't think it is working.

I don't think Hibs are there.

That's now five without a win for St Johnstone. They may feel hard done by with VAR interventions, but the wins need to start coming if they want to pull away from the relegation places.

Motherwell and Ross County are their next two fixtures. Huge, huge games.

Philippe Clement is just ringing everything he can out of these players.

He's tidied everything up and he's keeping them there with Celtic. I still think Celtic will pull away, but I don't think they'll win it comfortably.

He's done an excellent job so far, much better than I expected.

10th Premiership goal of the season. 17th in all competitions.

I feel like an Aberdeen game barely goes by where we don't ask, 'where would they be without him?'

Really though, where would they be without him? His penalty wasn't exactly lethal, but it did the trick.

    A proper goalscorer.

Nick Montgomery's record as Hibs manager:

    • 20 games
    • Seven wins
    • Seven draws
    • Six defeats

It's all a bit middling in Leith at the moment. The Hibs fans hoped for a revolution when the Englishman arrived, but they're having to be patient.

When I saw the Hibs line-up tonight, I thought it was going to be a tough one.

In a game like this, they need three midfielders. I felt sorry for the two in there.
