Here's what tonight's result does to the league table.

West Bromwich Albion remain fifth but have a host of teams within five or six points who are hoping to pounce on tonight's loss.

Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong, speaking to Sky Sports:

"A win is really important, it's what we wanted tonight against a really good team, it's a tough place to come. We were really disappointed with how things went during the week so today was all about putting that right and playing the way we wanted to play.

"Some parts of the game weren't spectacular but we got the three points and it's a good performance in the end."

    Goalscorer David Brooks added:

"It was very important to get the two-goal cushion because anything can happen. When we got the second goal, it settled the nerves a bit. We managed to keep the ball a lot better and quieten the crowd. It was a good win."

WBA Robbo: Really feel West Brom may not even make the play-offs. Need a 20-goal a season striker to start with.

Alex in Leeds: Only hurdle for Southampton 'going up' (automatically) is beating Leeds at Elland Road. Good luck Saints!

Huddersfield, Leicester and Wolves were the only sides to win at The Hawthorns this season before tonight.

    Add Southampton to that list.

Their unbeaten run is up to one - just 25 more to go if they are to surpass their recent club record.

I'll hopefully bring you a bit of reaction before I depart.

You cannot fault the effort of the Albion lads, they kept pushing forward but did not have the quality.

There were too many poor passes - particularly the final ball.

They need to reorganise, get themselves ready for Plymouth on Tuesday, that is all they can do.

    Southampton were incisive.

It is important to remember how draining the game at Ipswich was at the weekend, then at Cardiff on Tuesday night.

Perhaps some tired legs after a tough week.

Southampton are a quality side and outplayed Albion tonight.

Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and say well played.

Southampton go back up to second in the Championship, a goal in each half enough to see off West Bromwich Albion.

The night promised so much for the Baggies, with their prospective new owner Shilen Patel in the stand to watch the match.

But two well-taken goals from Ryan Fraser and substitute David Brooks spoiled the hosts' party.

Talking of taking the sting out of this game...

Southampton swarm around you so quickly and it does feel like they have an extra man when they are all around you.

Albion just chasing shadows at the moment, they cannot get hold of the ball.

David Brooks' goal that gave Southampton a 2-0 lead about 10 minutes ago has taken the sting out of this game.

It's a fairly safe bet now that the three points will be heading back to England's south coast.

There's some strength in depth in this Southampton squad.

Flynn Downes and Che Adams aren't even involved and yet Russell Martin has been able to bring real quality off the bench.

David Brooks has proved it with his goal and, although it hasn't quite worked out for Joe Aribo yet at St Mary's, it's only 21 months ago that he was scoring in a Europa League final for Rangers.

It has been a bit of an anti-climax really.

Southampton have dampened things here, really quietened the crowd down.

It needed a result to keep these fans on board, keep them buzzing.

Tonight it has not gone their way on the field.

More subs to tell you about.

Nathaniel Chalobah is on for the final 10 minutes for Albion, replacing Okay Yokuslu.

Southampton bring on Joe Rothwell and Kamaldeen Sulemana for Stuart Armstrong and Sekou Mara.

I'm fairly sure there was a stat knocking around when Sulemana signed for Southampton last winter (forgive me if I'm wrong) that he had registered the quickest speed by a player at the 2022 World Cup.

That may well now be 'thank you and goodnight' for Albion.

And, if the new owners had to have their first evening in West Bromwich Albion ruined, at least the second clinching goal was a thing of beauty.

The Saints truly went marching in - a fabulous five-man passing move sweetly finished off by Wales international David Brooks.

Unless the Baggies can suddenly find some inspiration from somewhere, Southampton have got this won and they are going second.

"The Saints are going up" is the chant from the away section. Hard to argue!

    What a save!

A diving tip over save from Bazunu.

What a chance to get a goal back. He just has to head it down, but has given the goalkeeper a decent height to get a hand on.
