More from Wolves manager Gary O'Neil to BBC's Match of the Day: "I take full responsibility for everything that happens and what I'm giving you isn't excuses, it's just where we are. We gave everything to get to this point, we gave everything again today. Some of my shuffling around helped, some of my shuffling around cost us.

"The players gave everything, the fans gave everything and obviously is going to be devastated with the result for the next few days. We're going to have to find a way to dust ourselves down because the Premier League is going to be really tough now, what we're going to have to do with the players we have missing is going to be a real test of everybody. We need to be ready."

Was Coventry's first goal given incorrectly?: "I have to answer the questions, it sounds like excuses but it's not. It's not inconclusive, the ball hits his hand then goes in. My bench were pretty clear on that fairly early. It's maybe hit his hand and gone in the goal, VAR have decided they can't see it clearly enough. It's not the reason we lost the game. Disappointed, but more disappointed with the fact that we didn't raise it enough to get through.

Positives in defensive player scoring?: "We can move things around, we can play Mario higher but we lose him lower, we play Rayan higher, but we lose him lower. We can move stuff around and we will try and find solutions. We've found a few this season in general. I'm gutted I've not found one today. I'm really disappointed, devastated for fans and players."

Coventry City stunned Wolverhampton Wanderers to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for only the second time in their history thanks to two stoppage-time goals at Molineux.

The Championship side led through Ellis Simms' strike until the 83rd minute before falling 2-1 behind after Wolves' own dramatic comeback.

But Simms scored again to equalise in the 97th minute and Haji Wright curled in three minutes later to spark wild celebrations.

Mark Robins' men thought their dreams of becoming the first team from outside the top flight to win the FA Cup since 1980 had been dashed when Rayan Ait-Nouri and substitute Hugo Bueno struck in the final seven minutes in response to Simms' controversial opener.

But from nowhere, Simms got his second when he turned home Bobby Thomas' flick at the far post.

Then, with the stadium preparing for extra time, Simms found Wright with a neat lay-off before the 25-year-old found the bottom corner, giving Jose Sa no chance.

Robins and his backroom team raced on to the pitch at the final whistle to celebrate his side booking a return to Wembley, where they were beaten by Luton in last season's Championship play-off final, and where they famously defeated Tottenham in 1987 to win the FA Cup.

  5. 'There's loads of reasons why we lost'published at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    FT: Wolves 2-3 Coventry

    Wolves

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil to BBC's Match of the Day: "There's loads of reasons why we lost. I thought where we've ended up today as a football club, we know how small the squad is and how many players we have missing, so that plays a big part and I'm not interested in making excuses.

"We have to take our chances, going 1-0 down, made some tactical changes, Hugo coming on, Rayan going up the pitch, that works but then we can't get back to a decent structure on the pitch. The thing that helped us get back in it ended up costing us as well, so just an accumulation of things really, credit to the players and the fans, the players gave everything and Coventry met us on a day where we weren't at full strength and they were able to capitalise on it. They deserved to win the game."

A missed opportunity?: "Losing in a quarter-final is obviously a missed opportunity, we produced as good as we could produce. That was it, the lads gave everything.

"I knew it would be tough as it was. We have one fit senior attacker fit at the club which is Pablo Sarabia, we used Rayan and we used Mario higher but then we lose them lower."

I don't know what it is but I have been told the EFL have a contingency in place should Coventry - or Leicester - reach the FA Cup final and the Championship play-off final.

Both are due to take place on the same weekend at the end of May.

  7. 'Immensely proud'published at 14:57 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    FT: Wolves 2-3 Coventry

    Coventry

Coventry City manager Mark Robins talking to ITV: "We created a lot of chances, their keeper was probably man of the match and it was one of those games where chances you missed might come back to bite us, 87/88 minutes we're 2-1 down. I was screaming at Fabio Tavares to get up the field because he was defending with eight minutes left.

"He showed real courage, real determination and the finishes were outstanding as well. I'm not sure if Ellis got his first one but the second one definitely was and Haji's, as soon as it left his foot I knew it was in."

How much of an achievement is this?: "It means a lot to everybody. I've been tasked with quite a bit this season, the new owners have wanted a cup run, they've got a cup run, they're getting a cup run and also, we need to try and get into the play-offs three out of five years. It's not an easy feat, not an easy task but I've got incredible support and staff around the team whatever the scoreline is. It drives you on, it just gives you the energy, it's absolutely outstanding."

How proud are you?: "Immensely [proud]. It's really hard to put into words really. It's been a long time since it's happened really and the fact we were not only a goal down but we'd got back into it and went on to win it and deservedly so. We created some really good openings. Some of the football we played was really good and I'm really proud, it's a really proud day."

Chance to make history after a play-off final defeat last time at Wembley?: "Don't spoil it, reality bites and you look at who is left in the competition, we know we've overcome a real giant today, a really good team, a lot of injuries as we've spoken about in the lead up to this."

  8. Another Championship club reaches the FA Cup semi-finalspublished at 14:51 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    • In Coventry City this season and Sheffield United in 2022-23, a team from outside of the Premier League has reached the FA Cup semi-finals in back-to-back campaigns for the first time since 2013-14 (Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United) and 2014-15 (Reading).
    • Coventry's Ellis Simms has scored 10 goals in his last eight appearances across all competitions after only netting four times across his first 35 outings for the club.

I have only just got my breath back.

I had a report written that Coventry had won with a controversial goal.

I scrapped that and did another saying Wolves had won it with two late goals.

In the end I had to get rid of that to write Coventry won it with two even later ones.

Mark Robins' side deserved it. I doubt Gary O'Neil will take much satisfaction from the fact Wolves were involved in a classic.

  10. Coventry heading to Wembley againpublished at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

    FT: Wolves 2-3 Coventry

    • Wolves have been eliminated from the FA Cup by a team from a lower division for the first time since they were knocked out by non-league side Luton Town in round three in the 2012-13 season; it is the first time Wolves have gone out to such an opponent at this stage of the competition or later.
    • Coventry City have reached the FA Cup semi-finals for the second time, after also doing so in the 1986-87 season, when the Sky Blues went on to lift the trophy for the only time in their history.
    • Coventry have progressed to play at Wembley for the fourth time since the 2016-17 season, the joint-most times of any non-Premier League club in that period (level with Sunderland and Tranmere Rovers): 2016-17 Football League Trophy, 2017-18 League Two play-off final, 2022-23 Championship play-off final.

Two-goal Coventry forward Ellis Simms, speaking to ITV, says: "A great occasion. the fans have been amazing and we're just delighted. I'm so proud of the lads, we've dug in and even at 2-1 down we never gave up.

"It's going to be a great occasion at Wembley. We want to go all the way. The next round will be tough against a top Premier League team but we will give it our all and go in with all guns blazing."

Match-winner Haji Wright adds: "There's a lot of quality in our side and as long as we believe and keep trying, we can take our chances. It's amazing to make it to Wembley and it will be good fun for all of us. Hopefully we can enjoy it [today] and then get back to work.

"Both me and Ellis didn't have amazing starts here but he [boss Mark Robins] believed in us and now we are in a spot where we can show ourselves."

The referee allowed the game to flow when he could. We thought Coventry we could into the game with a low block, try and counter attack, but they were brilliant. They will wonder how they didn't scorer seven or eight goals, but it's a brilliant performance that has got them through.

Wright didn't have to do anything apart from pick his spot. Wolves had been kicking the ball away, they accepted taking their time and accepted extra-time, but Coventry went for one more attack and it paid off.

Coventry didn't look like they were against a side eighth in the Premier League.

We've witnessed one of the best FA Cup quarter-finals I've seen. It's been an outstanding game of football. This game has been all about Coventry, most teams falling behind that late would've thought that was it.

Coventry have got goalscorers in team, Simms and Wright have scored a lot of goals between them and they've got themselves into a semi-final.

  15. Postpublished at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March

One of the craziest finishes to a match you could ever see. After 83 minutes it was 1-0 to Coventry, Wolves scored twice in five minutes and led after 88 minutes.

But it was far from done. Ellis Simms got his second of the day in the 97th minute, before Haji Wright won it in the 100th minute just as extra-time was calling.

From hope to despair to ecstasy for Coventry fans.

Wow. What a game of football we have witnessed. Two teams going toe to toe, we thought at this stage, both teams will have accepted extra-time. Coventry get it into Ellis Simms, who has been such a handful today. We wondered has Wright got the ability and he has just passed it into the net.

Coventry have surely won it in the 10th minute of injury time!

Mark Robins goes crazy, so too do the Coventry staff, fans and players. Incredible!

Hands on their heads for some of the Wolves players, they are into the last three or four minutes. They knew Coventry were going to get another chance. Thomas attacks the front post and it's brilliant, he's just trying to help it on. Simms has missed one big chance in this game, he scored one earlier and now he's got another.

  20. goal

GOAL - Wolves 2-2 Coventrypublished at 90+7 mins

    Ellis Simms (Coventry)

Coventry snatch an equaliser in the seventh minute of injury time. Brilliant drama.

Defender Bobby Thomas is pushed up front, he gets a glancing header on a cross and Ellis Simms keeps his composure to head into the net from six yards out for his second of the afternoon.

Coventry looked finished, but what a finish to the game.
