A dazzling early goal, a deft finish to make it two, a penalty by way of reply and a goalkeeper hoping to rescue a point from a corner at the end.

It's all in a night's work in the Championship, leaving West Brom closer to Wembley and Coventry on the catch-up.

For the hosts, the first game of the Shilen Patel and Bilkul Football era begins with victory. You can read Ged Scott's report from The Hawthorns, but for now that's all from us.

Join us again tomorrow for more EFL action, starting with Bristol City's match at home to Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town's home game against Leeds United, both of which kick off at 12:30 GMT.

  2. 'We weren't clinical'published at 22:31 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March

FT: West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

Coventry manager Mark Robins, speaking to Sky Sports: "I set the team up wrong, there's no doubt. We needed to be a little better.

"West Brom have a lot of Championship know-how. Having to make changes because of injuries disrupts things for us, and it affected us in the first half.

"Had we had a more aggressive mindset, we'd have been able to contribute more. In the second half, we were much more aggressive and part of the game.

"We had a lot of chances but were rash with shots. To pull a goal back, with the time we had, it looked like we had impetus and momentum - but we weren't clinical at any stage.

"If you sit at home and you're not aggressive... if you can't play through them, it's a waste.

"Mikey Johnston's a really good player and has put the ball in the far corner brilliantly. But we've got to do better. He's put the ball through Milan's legs and we should have had players back to stop it. Then Grady Diangana ghosts in to score.

"If we can show the spirit, commitment and - at times - quality we had in the second half, we can get back [into the play-offs]. But we're running out of games."

  3. 'Not easy to find wingers like Johnston'published at 22:24 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March

FT: West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

West Brom manager Carlos Corberan, speaking to Sky Sports about Celtic loanee Mikey Johnston's goal: "That's why he was our target from the beginning. He can play in the different positions where we need wingers to play. He can receive the ball wide or be a playmaker inside. It's not easy to find a winger who can do both."

  4. 'It was squeaky at the end'published at 22:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March

FT: West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

West Brom winger Jed Wallace, speaking to Sky Sports: "It's the Championship - we knew it wasn't going to be easy.

"In the first half, we had complete control. It's that time of the season: we looked leggy at times in the last 30 minutes but we sat in our shape.

"It was a difficult penalty to give away. It was squeaky at the end but we know it's a massive three points and can watch the rest of the fixtures now."

Alex Mowatt's wish has not been granted.

Ex-Coventry City goalkeeper on BBC CWR

That wasn't a bad performance from Coventry but, ultimately, it's goals that count.

The first goal was a wonder goal from Mikey Johnston but they could have had people back and stopped him from doing it. You're not going to win many games defending like that. They didn't get people back, they paid the price and they've lost the game because of it.

I've never seen as many efforts from Coventry go over the top as they did today. I'm happy to see the confidence to take the shot but they needed to take more time. So near but yet so far.

  9. 'The win is massive'published at 22:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March

FT: West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

West Brom midfielder Alex Mowatt, speaking to Sky Sports: "They had a few corners at the end, so we were a bit nervous.

"We're just happy to get the win. We've dug in in quite a few games here. We're quite solid, so it was back to what we know.

"The gaffer got the table up in the meeting before the game tonight and showed us what a win could do for us. It's massive.

"I'm just buzzing. It's Friday night and hopefully we'll get the weekend off."

  10. 'I'm enjoying myself'published at 22:05 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March

FT: West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

West Brom winger Mikey Johnston has pointed out that his equally impressive strike earlier in the season against Plymouth also started with a nutmeg.

"I'm enjoying myself and my football right now," he adds to Sky Sports. "The win was important.

"I just hit the target. We need to get wins and just stay up there."

  12. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 March

    West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

West Brom return to winning ways at home and cement fifth position, where they'll remain regardless of other results this weekend.

It was hard-earned towards the end - Coventry's belief fuelled by Haji Wright's coolly-taken penalty - but Carlos Corberan's side claim the points.

The hosts are fifth, closing the gap on Southampton to eight points. City are ninth, four points off the play-offs. They'll look back on a lack of cutting edge.

I'm not sure if the ball is lighter tonight? I've never seen the ball go over the top this much.

Coventry are working hard, really pressing. They may be in the middle of a mid-league pile-up but they are giving it everything to get this equaliser.

    West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

No need for Ben Wilson to be up. Victor Torp's outswinging corner hits one of the first defenders inside the box.

An offside flag is raised. That may be the points in the bag for the Baggies.

  15. Postpublished at 90+3 mins

    West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

Coventry have a free-kick midway inside West Brom territory on the right.

West Brom clear, but their opponents have the ball back. One more chance? They send it long into the box and win a corner.

Ben Wilson goes up. Fans in blue and white hats cheer.

  16. Postpublished at 90 mins

    West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

There will be five minutes of added time.

West Brom can put their feet up and relax if they achieve that seven-point cushion on the teams outside the play-offs tonight, while a point could be huge for Coventry's hopes of reaching those positions.

Plenty of clasped hands visible in the stands.

  17. Postpublished at 89 mins

    West Brom 2-1 Coventry City

Marginally better in the long-range-shots stakes for Coventry.

Josh Eccles is the man to take aim this time, his strike taking a deflection on its way behind.

Alex Palmer flaps at the corner and City continue to build. The tension is palpable.

Ellis Simms' hat-trick in the FA Cup on Monday will feel like a distant memory if he can't improve his shooting dramatically during the closing minutes.

Simms looks up from a promising position near the penalty area and wedges another effort well over the crossbar.

Plenty of possession for Coventry. Unfortunately for them, they're still not doing too much of note with it - nor entering dangerous areas.
